Keeping raspberries under control
Comments (6)Raspberries are not really comparable to avocados. They are not a single plant or bush. They produce their fruit by putting out new canes every year. The reason raspberries 'travel' is that they are seeking new ground with a fresh supply of nutrients for their new canes. If you are going to prevent them from doing this you will need to ensure they have what they need in situ by feeding them well, pruning out old canes and allowing new ones to grow within your allowed area. You will not be able to stop them sending out runners and if they are constantly thwarted they will not be as happy as if they were allowed to roam. You can keep them in check for while but it is likely that after a few years you will need to start a new row elsewhere as they will exhaust the ground they have and the berries will become increasingly inferior in size and yield....See MoreMaple seedlings everywhere, how do you keep control?
Comments (8)Yes, I should have cut the tree down about 20 years ago. It has gotten very expensive to do that, and starting over with a new tree at my age? Nope, I have two of them and the neighborhood is full of them too. So have to live with them. I am organic so I don't use weedkillers. I wish there were a young neighbor that could help out in the garden. Ok, so I guess lots of people in the same boat. Just thought I'd ask, in case someone had come up with some ingenious idea. Comments (5)Hallelujah, someone else has this problem too! If I were you, I would be wary of trying to "keep" some of them. My lakefront was cleared by me soon after I moved in. I was about 20 years younger than now. Took a sharp shovel and dug down as deeply as I could. It took me awhile, but got it done. Didn't have a problem after that until new neighbors moved next door and when one of those cattail bogs blew in (nature's way) I suggested they move it out somewhere else on the lake in an area where the cattails had established themselves and formed wetlands. They thought that nice little bog (about 4foot wide) would be nice to have at their shoreline so it would attract the wildlife. All well and good, except now, four years later, that little 4 foot bog has grown to well over 100 feet and has grown back over to where I cleared my area. It will be difficult getting my pontoon boat docked at the pier. I've looked on the internet for suggestions how to control them and the only thing I can find with not using chemicals is the possibility of using a dark, large, heavy-duty tarp and weight it down so the sun does not reach the roots and allow the dang things to grow...or at least stunting them. Your county extention agent will be able to help you, I believe. Goodluck....from someone who knows how it is....See Morehelp identifying ants and do i need keep them under control?
Comments (3)Ants, usually are not a problem in gardens, although there are a few species in some parts of the USA that certain species could. None of those have adapted to New York, yet. Contrary to what many think ants are not often a problem in any garden. Ants are part of Ma Natures recycling machine and while they may clean up dead earthworms they do not, at least up north, kill them. kimmq is kimmsr...See Moreinsideout
