HM Moonlight, free to good home

Does anyone in my area want Moonlight? I had it years ago, didn't like it, and was pleased when it died. I saw a gorgeous rose in Melissa's garden that I fell in love with, another Moonlight. I'm convinced that it is a different rose; or that it grows differently in Italy; or maybe Melissa just has a magic touch. When I came home I ordered myself a Moonlight from a different grower than my first one. When it arrived last fall I was a bit dubious. It looked a lot like my old one, but I gave it six months in a bigger pot to see how it would shape up. Now the verdict is in. It is the same rose I used to have, and I still don't like it. It is free to good home, if anyone in the SF Bay Area will pick it up. If not, it is headed for next week's yard waste bin.

Glad to help. The more you can learn about furniture, the better you can see how to spend your dollar to get the balance of affordability and durabilty for your hard earned cash. There are as many leather care products out there as there is toothpastes, and everyone seems to have a favorite. Two things to do with leather, one is to get the oils and dirt off it to prevent the tanning agents from being compromised and the other is to put some moisterizer / protectant onto it. I use Leathermaster kits, not the cheapest, but that the commercial industry standard for nearly all leather upholstery makers. For Gardenweb members, $ 27.00 and free shipping (USA only). If you never get around to getting a leather kit, at the very least wipe the piece down with a damp cloth from time to time. I've seen customers ruin a quality leather recliner in under six years from hard use and no maintenance. On the other hand, I have a Hancock & Moor recliner that I purchased new in 1987 that still looks great, and I use the Leathermaster products on it 2x a year. I love the Pemberton Hybrid Musks but don't grow them well; the main problem, I think, is that I've neglected to give them the maintenance pruning they require. You have to cut out old canes regularly. They're roses for people who love good foliage, graceful habit, and scent, and don't demand large blooms or strong colors. 'Cornelia' when well grown is in my opinion one of the most beautiful roses in existence, with lovely foliage, habit, and a sweet scent that carries. It has a lax habit and can be grown as a floppy shrub, with support, or as a small climber. Similar in habit are 'Buff Beauty', 'Pax', 'Moonlight', and 'Kathleen'. 'Felicia' is shrubbier and less distinctive in character. I've never grown it well, so can't judge its beauty, but I grow it very willingly because it has one of the finest scents of all roses: old rose mixed with musk sweetness, carrying on the air. In our climate, with our heavy soil and good annual rainfall, the Hybrid Musks can go without summer watering, though of course they won't flower in dry conditions. As best as I can judge, given my relative lack of success growing them, in a hot dry climate they like cooler and moister conditions and part shade. Our neighbors grow 'Cornelia' very well espaliered against a wall that looks northwest. All this has reminded me that some time in my life I need to find a place that Hybrid Musks might like, prepare it really well, and then grow them there. Make them a little garden. Heaven knows the last thing I need is another project, but I would like to see them in their glory. My favorites are 'Cornelia', 'Pax', 'Francesca', 'Vanity', 'Kathleen', and 'Felicia' for fragrance. 'Penelope' is also very good: for some reason I tend to forget it. Also 'Buff Beauty', which many people love. 'Pax' is a very elegant rose for its long buds and the contrast between their whiteness and the dark leaves. The fully open flowers are less exciting, but they're fragrant and the plant has the usual graceful habit and good foliage.

Well, that's not our problem, for sure. Our Florida vacation guest room has an unfortunate limitation that prevents virtually all abuse -- it's just over 7' deep by 7' wide, with a pocket door, 2 small closets separated by built-in drawers to the right of the door and a single bed to the left, window straight ahead with a little side table below it. For obvious reasons it's used by easy-going singles who aren't claustrophobic, but it's nice and comfy and works very well. Notably (aside from a second single bed, writing table, and reading chair of course), it holds almost everything that article recommends. Extra pillows and blankets of varying softnesses and thicknesses, bath linens, small space heater, fan, are all ready in closets that are otherwise empty for guest use. An adjustable reading light is mounted on a wall so the little side table remains clear, and decor is simple and serene. The drawers are topped by a mirror, and their top holds a couple of welcoming things, including chargers plugged in and ready in a basket. Most of the other useful items mentioned in the article, including toiletries and meds, are waiting in the drawer(s). No TV so far, though I would like to add one, and flowers stay outside, but otherwise... Once the business of switching out the weird jello-wobbly bed that came with the place for a good one with soft, smooth linens was attended to, the rest of the comfort was/is easy and inexpensive.

Thank you, Pamela. It is yours. I'll bring it with me when I drive up in a couple of weeks. I also have to remember to stop at Martin's and buy a roll of gopher wire.

Melissa, I don't know what it was. I fell in love with your Moonlight and wanted one like it for my own garden. But this really doesn't seem to be the same rose at all. Similar perhaps, but lacking all the qualities I so admired in yours.

Isn't Moonlight something of a Southern USA specialty? In my reading I almost never encounter that rose, but it seems to me when I have it's because someone in Georgia or South Carolina wanted to plant it on a big trellis so that they could look down on the flowers from their bedroom window at night.

(Or am I thinking of some other rose?)

Rosefolly, could I ask what in particular caused your disappointment with Moonlight? Is it the color, bloom size, plant growth, health, all of the above, or none of the above? I look forward to your comments. I ask because I recently planted one.

Moonlight is extremely thorny and grows vigorously in a wild tangle that entraps the unwary gardener. It is highly subject to powdery mildew. I fell in love with its beautiful red canes, but for me they turn green quickly. Melissa's were deep red all over the plant in vivid contrast to lovely white single flowers and green leaves. Just stunning! That doesn't happen here for me. Also, I don't seem to recall any scent, though I'm working from memory on that and I could be wrong.

Thank you so much for your response re: Moonlight. I'm afraid I may have to move (or remove) mine since a very thorny, vigorous rose will not work in its current location in the garden. Mine is still very young and is not yet armed heavily with thorns, but thank goodness I've been fore-warned.

'Moonlight' has a musk scent that wafts. You may not notice it putting your nose up to a flower, but then you'll smell it fifteen feet away. It's a great rose in the right spot, but it's one of the Pemberton pocket ramblers, with a cascading habit and happy when trained as a climber. I think it would also enjoy scrambling through a hedge.

I would love to have one. Powdery mold is not usually a problem here except in dry winters. This year we had no powdery mold with all the rain and snow. Lots of blackspot and other fungi problems. Even the Knockouts defoliated. The hybrid musks seem to like South Louisiana
