Any pleasant surprises this year?
Comments (3)Several years ago I planted a Persicaria 'Crimson Beauty'. But it wasn't until this year, after my new back porch was built, that I really appreciated it. From that vantage point, the 'Crimson Beauty', which is just now passing its prime, stands behind a Miscanthus 'Gracillimus'. In the afternoon, from about 3 P.M. until 5 P.M. or so, the light makes those two plants absolutely glow. Other plants in the picture include Sedum 'Autumn Joy' to the right of the Miscanthus (the flower heads are the same color as the Persicaria blooms), and Perovskia. (For those of you who don't know this terrific Persicaria, yes it is a relative of the dreaded Japanese Knotweed, but I've had it for 4 or 5 years and it's a clumper and doesn't seed around either. It's about 12 feet tall with the typical bamboo like stems, and the blooms, which appear in every leaf axil, start out ivory and turn to a rich cherry red. Fabulous!)...See MoreA Pleasant Surprise
Comments (13)Bustopher, this is Grande Amore first year in my garden, so it's hard to compare it to those you mention. Leibeszauber does very well in the PNW as you probably already know. Opening Night is a favourite red for cutting because of the number of blooms it produces for me. Olympiad is a great rose, unfortunately it didn't like me or I didn't get a very good plant. I haven't had Ace of Hearts for years, but at one time it was popular here too. Grande Amore seems to be quite weather proof as we have had a lot of continuous rainy days which tends to spoil so many blooms. I'm not happy with the rips in the petals, but there are some nice big fat buds that will open soon and I'm hoping they will be better. Since it is quite new, I thought you all might like to see it tho. Thanks for looking....See MoreFlowers from a Pleasant Friday
Comments (14)Serendipity, my plants are initially usually started in a pot. But there are people here, including Maryl and Jean, who grow only in pots. If the pot is big enough, the process can be quite successful, particularly in very dry years, like this one. However, in the North, overwintering pots can be problematic. Mulching is important. They can also be overwintered in the garage. Julia, yes, all we can do is make the best of a bad situation. We are headed into a heat wave with soil that is already too dry. Unfortunately, in terms of eliminating, it can be difficult to evaluate things in a bad year....See MoreShow or tell about your recent pleasant surprises
Comments (25)My most recent good surprise is Pinata. I agonized over and researched getting a rose for a shady spot. Pinata was the only one that said "preferred" shade in the reviews. I saw the blooms at High Country Roses but was not smitten. Too small and not that gorgeous. In the end I got it anyways. The bloom I have is a greenhouse bloom since it was set in the green house but my oh my, it is gorgeous and long lasting. Here is was Sat. Aug. 31. The size was much bigger than I anticipated. More of a smaller large bloom than even a larger medium bloom. Here it is Sun. 9/1/19 Wed. 9/3/19 Yesterday Friday 9/6/19 Then today, a full week after blooming it is losing one petal. Sat. 9/7/19. I love it when a rose ages gracefully. To me the bloom is still gorgeous at the end. And lasting a full week is appealing to me also. I hope it behaves the same when it gets established. We put this rose in without much enthusiasm and much backward and sideways looking for something that I liked better and it turns out I like it quite a bit. So it is a happy surprise....See Morejerome
