I know the freeze here last Easter pretty much messed up my roses all last season...hopefully you'll be luckier than I was.

I am so sorry to hear that. I remember our last years disaster and I better not complain because here in this coastal town the freeze wasn't so devastating than further inland.

Do you have enough snow that you can mound snow on some of the roses to protect them? Snow really does help protect; it can keep temps at freezing and stop wind damage.
And to put your expected temperatures in line with ours, yours are predicted to be ten Fahrenheit degrees colder than ours (with similar below freezing hours) for a bit longer time period than ours )At least an additional day).

And in Southern California, after weeks of unseasonably chilly temperatures, we're suddenly running something like 10 degrees above normal.
Clearly, the old weather patterns no longer hold.

Neils, I feel so bad for you; I know how discouraged and worried you must be about your roses.
We too are experiencing very cold temps now and a seemingly never-ending winter, but at least mine are still completely and safely buried.
We will all be crossing our fingers for you and hoping everything turns out o.k.

My sympathies. And we know what you are going through. Just don't even go outside until it's all over. Then just re-prune. There is really nothing else to do.

I really feel for you. When it happened here last spring, with roses leafing out, all pruned and fertilized, I sat down and cried. They lost all their new growth, but they came back and performed well. Hope yours get through OK.

Niels, I understand completely how you feel after suffering through the late freeze we had last year. I am so sorry.

That's bad, Niels. Last year after the Easter freeze the roses recovered pretty well but the delay in the spring flush seemed synchronized with the emergence of the thrips. I hope that won't happen to you.

I did go outside and saw all the droopy frost zapped shoots. The Clematis looks really bad too, hanging and all frozen. I placed buckets over all the small teas and china I grow. Sadly there is not much snow to cover them and they will be fully exposed to the frost. Also perennials like bleeding hearts and peonies and some French anemones that were not supposed to be hardy here are all frozen. The blooming forsythias looks like they are in shock ...Usually roses are tough and can handle a few night with light frost in the spring. But harder frost like this for 4-6 days is not good. But well I will just have to reprune, they will shoot from sleeping eyes again. At least this cold snap came early and not late like the easter freeze many of you experienced last year. But like I wrote many places even way south in Europe are affected by this Arctic front. I also heard it was pretty bad in Sweden (But they are more used to it). I still think we experience global warming though:

That certainly looks like a painful freeze. Here in our warmish spot in northern Italy the temperature has definitely dropped, but from warm April-, even May-like temperatures to more appropriate cool beginning-of-spring temps, and I can only call it a good thing. No frost. My Teas and Chinas are putting out new growth with great exuberance (I hope we don't get a late freeze, too) and yesterday I saw the first two opening flowers on 'Safrano': they weren't very pretty, but they were there. But it's very dry here. Most of Italy has seen generous rain this winter, but there's a dry spot where the rain never seems to get to, and we're in it. The ground already has cracks. Oh, for an inch of rain.

I hope your garden comes out of this without too much damage.

I read next week it will be warmer again. Hope your roses will recover well. We will have two nights with frost temperatures (-5C), not that bad. Only the Magnolia flowers were zapped, but rose foliage looks still fine after the first night. Hope it survives this night too!

As some of you may be aware of. This may be Nemesis ... deporting so many of you to Siberia ... for breaking some reasonable rules!? But well, like Rob said it will be over by Friday. They promise rain and up to 45F and no frost at night. It was 12F last night. And the worst it yet to come the next 3 nights. It is bitterly cold outside! Roses really can handle a few spring nights were the temp drop to 20F, but this is a bit worse. But the weather really is one of those factors that is beyond our control. All my plans for this week work has been changed. I was going to put up some fences and a pergola for a client. At least I had time to go over a few garden plans and make some changes. One client want a garden, where no plants attracts bees, but they want lots of flowers that requires no maintenance! And also ordering a huge amounts of plants from Germany. (Plants are so cheap in Germany compared to here ...roses are half price and the quality is always really good). So lots of boxes are going to arrive during the next weeks). Lets hope that we get through spring without any more of these cold surprises!!! Winter is way overrated IMO.

Isn't it even cheaper to order your plants in the Netherlands? Many plants sold in Germany are actually produced by Dutch companies (and grown in Eastern Europe, LOL).
