Wow, that is a really tall Ducher! I didn't realize they could get so tall but I always cut mine back pretty severely (one of them is in a pot).

You could try staking the bush like a tree but if it's loose in the soil you may have to cut it back a bit too.

I got those blasted winds too......really frustrating since my Mexican Plum and Redbud trees that had just started blooming had a lot of the blooms blown off. It looked like it was snowing outside. (felt like it too!)

It's happened to other roses of mine before.
I say- cut off any broken branches but leave it leaning. It'll throw out the most amazing new growth from the area that is now exposed to the sun!

Matter of fact, my 6' tall one is now 3' tall and awesome cause of a similar situation.. I didn't have to prune anything off.

We had a large Knockout blow over during a bad wind and rain storm---the earth was saturated and the roots were out of the ground for a couple of days (we were away)---DH tried to save it but the roots must have been out of the ground too long---
However a year later I noticed a little shoot about 6 in. tall in the spot where the original root was----

I think you have nothing to lose by staking and tying it back. You can always cut it back if the rose makes it obvious that's what's needed.

Just straighten it up, stake and tie. I would not cut one back unless this happened after the heat set in.

Seems if a mature plant ever once blows over, it will always be prone to blow over again, never can catch up with adequate support roots.

What Carrie from Texas said..my seven 6' Duchers are now laying splayed from the 10" of snow we had this weekend. I'll leave them (like I did several years ago when this happened). Wait until the new growth appears in the middle..cut out the dead on the outside and you have a whole new bush. Ducher is a great rose for our climate..and survived 5 degrees this winter here.

Like Kaye said- whole new rose. New growth from everywhere! I've had Ducher and Rubens and lots of teas do this and it really is like you get a whole new plant.

I just inserted rebar tripods (using six foot pieces) through the middle of two of my toppled roses. It worked surprisingly well. My son helped me, with the usual "I dunno, Mom" doubts, and we both were astounded at how much the rebar itself supported the roses without even tying them up (although I did so).

I erred by not planting my roses deep enough, and I certainly do let Teas and China grow tall because I far prefer the graceful building of new canes to the frantic spoke-like growth that occurs when you whack back a cane. Several of my roses have trouble staying upright. I thinned Comtesse du Cayla somewhat this winter, and did some shortening of canes back to laterals (particularly on the sides where it was encroaching on the path). It stayed upright in the recent winds, so maybe thinning is a help.

I've definitely seen that "whole new plant" approach in the cemetery. I just don't have room for that at home.

Thank you everyone for your advice. It seems that some of you are of the "leave it" persuasion and some of the "tie it" persuasion, and more importantly that both ways are able to work long term. I did have a smaller (younger) Monsieur Tillier do this before, and I did indeed leave it to regrow and it has been fine ever since. But Ducher is growing with more companions and I don't really think there is room to leave it leaning unless I am prepared to move other plants.

Anita, your thought that deeper planting would help prevent this problem seems like a good one. I think I should definitely do this in the future. I'm glad that the rebar tripod seemed to work well even before the tying up. I'm rather lazy about tying up, and even prefer to weave my climbers rather than tying them up (although this does make for more work when it is time to remove a cane).

Greybird, I fear that you also are probably right that if a mature plant shows a tendency to blow over, it will probably do so again.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what effect leaving it leaning has on the root system? In my case, the roots are still completely covered and in the ground. Do you think that when you leave a rose bush leaning, the extra stress on the roots would cause it to grow more roots to even out the stress and thus better anchor the plant? Or do you think that it is just a physical effect - that when you leave it leaning and allow new growth to occur, it merely changes the shape from vase shaped to much wider and therefore more stable in the wind, like cweathersby's awesome 3' tall bush? Certainly, my Monsieur Tillier is also more stable now after leaving it, but it is also much wider than it would be if it hadn't blown over.

I don't know the answer to that. I would think that standing it back up would shift the roots again which wouldn't help much with the stability issue.
But with all of the new growth you'll get from a leaning bush, it won't be long till it's just as tall as it was!
The ones that have leaned once that I've left leaning have not leaned again. But it may just be a matter of time until another big snow or wind pulls them back down.
I really wish there was a pruning method that could cause the amounts of new growth that having a rose leaning over can cause. I would kill to have that kind of growth on all my roses instead of just the ones that mother nature tried to punish this year.
