Create paths instead of grass around rose beds

Maintenance of the garden is one of my greatest problems. I skimp on mulch in the spring, and am a slave for the rest of the season.

I try to just mow around the beds, and in doing so the bermuda flies into the beds giving me more bermuda grass in my rose beds.

What kind of paths do you create, and how do you economize? We are far from rich, but I think if I weigh the cost of mulch and landscape fabric against the cost of flat rocks, I will see that the latter is better for me.

Even though I don't spray anymore, I am not opposed to using Round Up (with a paint roller) and killing the grass in the paths.

My husband said that to use the rocks, we would have to dig out the area, put in landscape fabric and sand, then lay the stones.

I would like to know what you do.
