Can I grow Climbing Peace in afternoon shade?

I just brought home a bare root Climbing Peace & it would look best against a trellis that happens to be situated where it will be shaded from about 1 pm on. Will it get enough sun in that spot? Our summers are dry, so I'm hoping that will decrease the disease potential. I'd love to hear your input.

As long as it gets about 6 hours of sunlight daily it will be OK. That can even be split between morning and evening just so it equals about 6 hours.
Good luck with your climbing Peace. Climbing sports of hybrid teas and grandifloras are not5 known for being very good bloomers. Every once in awhile someone will report good luck but more often than not, no!
Every one I've ever tried gave me a few blooms in spring but seldom repeated. Being in a zone that gets lots of cold winter weather didn't help.

It would be very helpful to know what zone you garden in because the quality or intensity of light can have a bearing on how much sunlight a rose needs to thrive.

Climbing Peace is a rose that requires lots of patience. It takes quite a long while (several years) to settle in and to produce the growth that, in turn, promotes bloom production. Because it's so slow to mature, I feel that it's especially important to do whatever is necessary to keep Climbing Peace in good health. A rose that's healthy and well-foliated throughout each growing season will naturally mature more rapidly. As long as they're well watered and fed, Peace and Climbing Peace do well in dry climates like yours. One doesn't often see a well-grown Climbing Peace, but with patience and determination a Climbing Peace in full flush can defy description.

Most of the plants I mentioned aren't evergreen, and they weren't meant to be prescriptive in any event. You should check out what your local nurseries have available, see what you like, and research their eventual shapes in a shrub book or on the internet. I'd say deciduous shrubs would be nicest in this setting, but your taste may dictate otherwise. I will add my mite too to the question of whether your conditions "qualify" certain plants to grow in the situation you are working with. What you need to understand in order to evaluate plants for this area is why various plants need the amount of sun or shade that is recommended for them, and what will happen if they don't get it. To some extent trial and error is the only way to learn this, but you can also learn the horticulatural principles to improve your ability to guess which plants will succeed. For example, most shade plants are adapted to catching as much light as possible in a shady environment. This is why many of them have big leaves. And they tend to prioritize surface area over leaf thickness, as they aren't faced with dessicating sun. So when you put shade plants in too much sun, the leaves are prone to burning and scorching, and they tend to wilt. Sun plants, on the other hand, have adaptations that allow them to resist heat, and they get leggy and don't bloom if they get too little sun. Obviously there are endless variations of leaf size and other attributes. For example, as someone mentioned above, there are hostas that actually want and need a certain amount of sun. And there are plants that are adapted to grow in the shade of deciduous trees, so they bloom in early spring when they get sun, and go through their leafy phase during summer. Some plants can also adapt to local conditions. For example, if the shade is really heavy and dense, as in the shade of a house, shade plants will grow their leaves extra big. But such a plant will be extra-sensitive if you change its conditions in mid-season or maybe if it gets a mid-day blast of sun. The conditions recommended on plant labels are only a guideline, and there are no guarantees that your conditions of partial shade are the kind of partial shade that a certain plant wants. KarinL

What most don't realize is the climbing mutation isn't an "on/off" proposition. It is a continuum with some plants being more rampant with fewer flowers and some not rampant but more "enthusiastic" than a bush with more flowers than the rampant one. Read old introductions of climbing HT sports in the ARS annuals and editions of Modern Roses. You'll find the same HT mutating in different countries and various nurseries in the same country with reports of this one flowers spring through fall, while another only flowers in spring. Some were "heavy, repeat flowering" while others were as low as "sparse bloom". It sometimes makes a difference from which nursery you obtain your plant as some had/have more heavily flowering versions than others. Yet, that CAN vary quite a bit from one plant to the next, all of them propagated from the same stick of bud wood as it is a mutation, and each one can actually vary quite a bit. Some are more stable than others, but not all. You can still find reports of how widely Cl. Iceberg varied when first discovered and introduced back in the late sixties. Some versions grew rampantly with very little flowering at all while some were "vigorous" yet flowered repeatedly as if they were more vigorous bush versions. You really had to pay attention to were you bought your climbing Iceberg to make sure it would repeat. It took several years for most sources to standardize and offer the same version so you could buy it without having to make sure it repeated. Of course, the differences in performance can well be climatic and cultural, but, yes, there have been, and I'm sure still are differing versions of the same mutation of the same variety. can I grow azaleas in lt. shade with 3 hours of aft. sun

I have Rhododendron and Azaleas as foundation plantings in front of my house. They are facing north, get maybe 2 hrs of dappled sun in the morning and are huge and beautiful after 6 years. I have two more Rhododendron at the front edge of my property that get considerably more sun, 3-4 hours a day (more when the leaves from nearby trees have dropped) but are not nearly as big and lush as the ones against the house. I have assumed that it is because they are more exposed to the cold winter winds and the soil is not as rich. So........very little sun is fine, but take other things into account as well.

Thanks for the help! I'm in Sonoma County, Calif - north of SFO. Our summers are typically hot & sunny, tho we do sometimes have spells of foggy morning weather (and morning sun is the sun I'm counting on...). Hmmm...a neighbor has a well-established Climbing Peace, and yes, when that plant is in full bloom, it is a force to be reckoned with!

I'm trying to think of another spot for that beauty. Maybe if I move the newly planted Madame Alfred Carriere from her sunny spot, which she doesn't particularly need....

Madame Alfred C. needs more than just a trellis--she needs an entire house. She gets very, very large.

Yes, so I've heard! The madame was received as a band, so at this point, her house-covering ability seems all too moot, tho I know it isn't. I decided not to move MA. Her current home (I hope) will give her plenty of opportunity to roam, as it sounds she fully intends to do. Sidebar: does she tend to flower only at the top, or all along the length of the cane? Once her canes are tall enough, I'm training her with some horizontality (to coin an awkward word) to better use the space & perhaps take up some of the length of the canes.

I ended up moving CP to another fence that receives sun until around 2 pm, and the tall growth will have sun longer into the afternoon. It probably isn't optimal, but it's the best I can do given the available space. I guess I'll just have to make sure I keep CP very well fed.
