Interesting roses at Home Depot

I ran in to see what they had before going grocery shopping (and trying to get home before the Super Bowl). Been going in for weeks, and no packaged bareroots. They're really late this season. They used to always carry J&P and Coiner roses, but not this yr. I had talked to a Coiner rep last week about possibly carrying their roses in the store, but was told it was too late to order bareroots, that we'd have to go with potted roses. I asked how come HD still didn't have anything yet. He told me their corporate, at least on the west coast apparently, only wanted to order what they sold last yr. Guess sales are down. So I guess they didn't order from Coiner, or J&P. He said they lost the HD account.

So, anyway, they had a smattering of roses from Great Western Roses in Arizona. Mostly the old standbys... and a few newer roses. Most notably, I grabbed two that I just tried to get from Hortico, but they can't get them this yr (supposedly)... OPERETTA and MAGIC BEAUTY. Then I also grabbed one called DELIGHT. Looks like it's the older climber from 1909 that's got semi-double red blooms. It didn't say on the package that it was a climber.... I don't think anyway. Thought I'd give it a try. They also had the lovely lavender ht called MONET, which I know some of you have been looking for for awhile. Oh, and I remember someone here was asking about a climber called SERAPE. They had it too. Looks to be a solid red. Don't know if all the HD's will carry these roses or not, but the Chico one is where I went. I'll post pics when these babies bloom!! They were nice and healthy, and not waxed.

I want the garden managers at your HD to call ours. The ones in these parts know squat about roses, and wouldn't know an interesting one if it sat up and bit their dog. Sigh. More roses for the Queen of All Roses! I can garden vicariously through you!!!

Our Home Depots in South SF Bay area, are carrying "Armstrong" roses since Christmas. They all very common HT and Floribundas. Nothing interesting. Well too bad.

I've found Weeks, Star, and JP roses at all the big box stores at discount prices. It has more to do with timing than anything else. The easy answer to your original question is that big box stores place market caps on all the items that they sell. All too often this means that they won't sell something unless it is cheap enough to buy from a wholesaler where the big box stores can make a 25-100% markup and still fall within the economical tastes of their customer demographic. They will also often under price similar items with little to no markup if there is competition down the road. There philosophy is that they can hold their marketing breath longer than the small operation down the street until it breaks the mom and pop shops. This is an aggressive tactic which has made companies owned by the likes of the Waltons (Wal-Mart) so successful. Once the competition has been run out of business they change their market line-up in order to rationalize the newer higher prices. We consumers are at the heart of the problem when we only want to pay $5 for a rose that cost significantly more to grow, graft, fertilize, water, spray, yank out of the ground, hose down and trim, tag, deliver, and pot up at a local nursery. From experience I can tell you that most roses sell, at wholesale price (bare root), around 4-9 dollars depending on how new or rare the variety is (demand) and popularity (supply). All growers will sell weaker plants in a grab-bag style at a lower price ($2-$3) with no tags. These are the roses that most big box stores sell to the public as "Promo" rose bushes. The mark-up is low, but it gets customers in to buy complement items that sell at much higher mark-ups (such as potting soil, sprays, fertilizer, etc.). Now, I'm all for defending and supporting the local mom and pop shops, but let's take a look at what they do...There are two m&p nurseries by my house that I frequent. One will sell me a Nelson's Florida rose bush at $25-$30 dollars while the other sells it to me me for $16. Both have employees and owners that don't have much more of a clue on how to keep a rose healthy (or what a healthy rose looks like, for all that matter) and both basically sell the same product. I know that the rose wholesales for around $10 and must be ordered in sets of five with a minimum total order purchase of around 100 rose bushes. In this case I will go out of my way and first see what the m&p nursery, that sells roses for $16 (a whole $6 mark-up), is selling before I ever spend any of my money at the m&p nursery that is selling the same roses for $25-$30 (a $15-$20 markup (that's more than 100%!)). The m&p nursery pays their employees the same salary, maybe even less, as the big box stores. They also are selling you on a false idea that what they sell is any better than what you can find at big box stores (of course you have to know for yourself what you are buying and weigh its value for the $ for yourself based on your experiences). So why support a business that keeps quality roses out of some people's economical reach? I apologize for this disertation-esque posting, but the us-agianst-them mentality gets old, especially when no one is to blame more than we consumers that demand everything to be much cheaper than its equal value in other countries, but, alas, that only leads to another discussion that I'll hold for someone elses thread, when it becomes available. Bonica is a terrific rose. The first spring flushes on mine are terrific, and it has a lot of repeat through the season. No disease problems for me at all, and in a fairly exposed location in my Toronto front garden it was about 75% cane hardy this year. Being such a low-care, heavy flowering rose it's sort of like a prettier, hardier Knockout Rose. It's got the easy maintenance of a shrub rose but so many clusters of flowers like a Floribunda.

In SE VIrginia, Home Depot contracts with a local nursery to produce most 0f the plant material, arrange the displays and provide all the care. Plants that are not up to par are pulled by nursery employees and put back on the truck. The nursery employees are fairly knowledgeable but when they're not there, good luck getting answers to plant questions. Since the nursery eats the losses they are motivated to take good care of the plants and locally, they do a very good job keeping up with the watering. Lowe's, on the other hand, has a plant specialist in the department assisted by others who have some on-line training. The Plant Specialist does the ordering and makes markdown decisions. Our Lowe's has several employees who are knowledgeable and their training is geared towards assisting customers. During peak season they are assisted by vendors who unload and arrange the plants. In our local store, the nursery has a subsidiary who provides these merchandisers, called Plant Partners. Lowe's expects the merchandisers to focus on tasking and let Lowe's employees handle the customers. The weak point in this arrangement was that the watering was supposed to be handled by part-time, untrained employees. (One told me she refused to water the Kordes roses because they were so thorny and she wasn't provided any gloves!) I've worked at both stores.

I feel lucky to have gotten Comte de Chambord, Mme. Pierre Oger and General Jacqueminot at our Home Depot in Texas. Nothing else looked interesting - and stores are just now getting roses in. I go to Walmart nearly daily to see if they have their Great Value roses in peat pots. They have some very interesting varieties. Beth, sounds like you have added more lovely roses to your fabulous collection!

Beth, you make me laugh. You will be pretty close to 1000 roses this year, I am sure. I could say you need help - but you could take it the wrong way, heehee! But you know I mean "in the garden" for sure. When you talk about your roses and all your purchases, I always want to say, please let me see photos of your garden, the rosie areas, though I cannot think that you could possibly grow too many other plants, but maybe. I am sure your garden is a sight to behold at peek rose season.

Do you feel like starting a topic on PICTURES OF OUR ROSE GARDEN/S or something like that, it could keep us all occupied and glued to our screens for a while, and hopefully others will join in. Even would love to see the pictures of Celeste's garden and Karen for Roses again and Susans and everyones! There are so many people who post here who talk passionately about their roses, that I would love to see their garden - Niels etc. and what about Foghorn when they are not sleeping in their snuggly winter beds - and of course, any novices as we all start somewhere and have our plans and big ideas. What about Devon, we know he must have a hidden secret and growing beautiful Roses in the front of his property. In fact everybody who posts here, I would love to see your own garden pictures, and of course it would be nice if you gave some descriptions of where you are at with it and any future plans.
If you are game, it would be something to tide us all over in this interim season! You-go-girl! - Pleeeeeeeeease! I promise you will not be on your own. :SMILE

Great idea, Pauline! Did you mean on the Gallery? I already know your garden is beautiful as are many others. My current garden will be four years old this Spring, and is getting some maturity, but nowhere near like yours. I am in the process of playing "musical roses" right now. I move roses around that grew differently than I expected. And - some roses move right to the trash - or someone else's house! For example, I've seen it said many times that miniature roses don't count in the overall numbers. Not here - my minis are easily the size of floribundas, and some as big as hybrid teas. Those are some examples of ones that have to be moved around so they don't smother the roses behind them!

As for Beth - you are incorrigable! As I have been killing myself this week trying to take care of a garden with less than 200 roses, I think about having 1600, - which was your count before this year's long list of purchases! And, I think my lot may not be that much smaller than yours. Plus, I am retired now and have more time to devote to these needy plants. I know you are a collector and not into showing or garden tours, but still, I cannot comprehend how you do it. There is only one conclusion, You are either Super Rose Woman, or secretly a conglomerate of several dozen rosarians!

Snowheather,I mean this forum as I think many people miss the rose gallery. It is not about photography, but showing our gardens with the emphasis on our roses in relationship with the garden.

Yeah, I think Beth should start it. Are you game Beth? :)

Oh Pauline that's a great idea. The problem is, I don't have a whole lot of yard shots yet. But I'll see what I can come up with. We moved here in 2000, and the first couple of yrs I didn't get a whole lot done in the yard. Mostly had pot ghettos all over the place, and did a lot of brush removal and cleaning up, and putting fences up. Then we got into a kitchen remodel, and that took several months, so the yard got neglected again. I only really started seriously working on the garden around 2004. Our property is extremely sloped, and my husband kept talking about doing terraces,etc. But he doesn't really help me much out there, so if I waited for him to come out and terrace the dang yard, I'd still be waiting!! So I just started planting various beds and edging them with river rocks, and putting tiny gravel in the walkways. Of course he had to help me with that!!! I have 8 very tall Ponderosa pine trees all ove the back yard, and pine needles are a nightmare in the winter. (You should see the yard now!)

Anyway, over the last few yrs, I get a few more beds done and then I started filling in with perennials and irises (my other obsession). So, yes I do have a lot of other plants. Some are becoming invasive!

Hmmm.... guess I'll go back and see what pics I can come up with!

Beth I'm not surprise anymore that you have purchased some more roses.
Did you inherit more yard space?
And forgot to mentioned it.

The only way I will purchase any more roses from HD especially body bags is if I see Abracadrabra looking at me.

Ok, I started a Garden Shot thread in the Gallery. I guess I took more yard shots than I thought. I can't wait now til spring hits so I can finish up all the beds and get some really good pics. We still have another load or two of rocks and gravel to get, and then I should be close to getting done with the side yard area. Then I gotta start working on the upper yard along the fence (and get my husband to haul away that dang junker half a Camaro he has sitting up there that was for parts...) It's a real eyesore!

Moodyblue, I think Beth is closer to 2,000 than 1,000. Last years she had over 1,500 and since that she ordered from every vendor and ordered a lot! LOL.

Well because of this post I thought I'd stop by my local Home Depot to see what they had if anything. Well they had potted roses 75% off! I purchased a 5 gallon Fairy rose for 3.50,a 3 gallon rose called Liberty Bell for $1.79 and a 3 gallon rose called New Day for $1.79. They had climbing roses for $6. and tree roses for $7. Of some I saw were Carefree Sunshine which I might go back for, Royal Bonica, Sally Holmes, Playboy, Granada, Tropicana, Double knockout,and a few others and a few I had never heard of like Savannah Silk and Miss Salsa (these were patent pending) Unfortunately the picture and description tags were torn so I couldn't see what they looked like. Anyway the roses were green and healthy looking and were starting to leaf out. I am hoping that keeping them in the garage will keep them alive til spring.

Well I checked out our local HD - and as usual they did not have anything interesting! Much less choices than in previous years - very disappointing, but ... I'm glad they did not have anything I wanted because I have no room! I've got so many on order and don't know where I'm going to put the pots (no space in the ground, they have to go in pots)!

Last night they finally put out their bare roots.

I got Comte de Chambord and Rose de Rescht. I really wanted RdR too. Whoo Hoo, Finally some decent ones at HD! No Amber Queens, I would love one of those!

Today I'm headed up to Port Orchard. There's a huge, brand new Lowe's and a Fred Meyers. Going to check them out.
