My thanks to all for taking the time to post. Susan, I didn't know the Nessus sphinx moths used Virginia Creeper as a larval host plant. I'm not absolutely certain, but I think the next door neighbor has that vine on their back fence. I need to try and ID it this year. I see the Nessus sphinx moths here during the summer and assumed they had a larval host somewhere nearby (didn't realize it might be right next door!). The neighbor to the back of me has an American Beautyberry planted next to the fence between our properties and I read that it is a favorite nectar source for this moth so maybe I'm better covered for this little guy than I knew. Her beautyberry grows through the fence and arches over part of my back bed; so lovely in the fall when the berries and leaves turn. These little moths spend a lot of time feeding on the Butterfly bush blooms and Verbena bonariensis here. Maybe with the fruit feeder, my garden will be inundated with the little guys. :-) Tony and Sherry, I do have butterfly bush 'white profusion' and the smaller 'Nano Blue'. My garden is so small, that's all I can fit in of these larger bushes ... but do they ever attract the butterflies when in bloom, so would not want to be without them. Bananas are easy to find so will go with them as the main fruit for my net feeder. Mary

Given the trees and their ability to rob the soil of moisture, it sounds like you need suggestions for dry shade.... Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope', Azalea 'Gillie', Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Prostrata', Euonymus fortune 'Silver Queen', Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen', 'Pee Wee' or 'Little Honey', Loropetalum chinense, Microbiota decussata, Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki', Rhododendron catawba 'Bourgault', Distylium myricoides 'Blue Cascade' and Taxus x media 'Densiformis'. Perennials... Asarum canadense, Brunnera, Carex, Chrysogohum virginianum, Corydalis lutea, Euphorbia 'Red Martin', 'Christmas' and 'Arborvitae Fern', Hellebore, Heuchera, Hosta, Hypericum, Iris cristata, and Polygonatum. Have fun! These are great plants.

Does Sarcocca smell like honey? There is some shrub that smells like honey I just love. Regardless fragrance is always a plus. I also love epimedium too. The landscapers are doing some work around there tomorrow. After they are done, I will see what will fit most appropriately. Thanks for all the great suggestions! Good idea except the hardy clumping ones tend to be comparatively short-growing, the tall ones running in habit. Perhaps GA location is mild enough for hardiest tropical clumping species but I suspect there would be problems with periodic freezing back. Or even freezing out entirely. Anything chosen will need time to develop, it's not going to be a matter of the house next door disappearing anytime soon - if a tall hedge right in front of the fence is relied upon solely to screen the entire space. And with a comparatively refined and attractive type like holly we might actually be talking about 20 or more years before the currently desired level of screening is achieved. Unless huge specimens are located somewhere, trucked to the site and planted by a contractor. Yet with a more explosively growing, quickly quite tall species there is the problem of them appearing rank, becoming too much. It having been used by the ancient Greeks Laurus is a literally classic plant for all kinds of garden and landscape uses but does this Mediterranean climate tree grow in Atlanta? Evergreen Prunus species often reseed to a nuisance degree wherever they like the climate well enough to produce a feature like a tall hedge.
