Disease Resistant Hybrid Teas for humid climates?

Does anyone know of a hybrid tea rose that is resistant to black spot and mildew in climates with high summer humidity like Birmingham, Alabama?

A newer HT, Grande Amore, Is from Germany and has past their ADR no spray test. It will be a new addition to my garden this season.

I think Ferdinand Pichard may soon be coming to live with me. :) I'm not buying anything for the next couple of weeks, though. I have some friends who are landscape architects and they know some people who grow antique roses, I think for the wholesale trade. They say they'll take me out to these people's house where I can tour their personal garden and buy some roses. So I need to wait and see what I can get there. Sherry, these people live very near Ocala. (And judging by your screen name, I guess you do, too.) :-) If it turns out that they're actually set up for retail and you can shop there without having landscape architects there to give the secret handshake, I'll let you know. I'm guessing they probably grew a good portion of roses in my garden that I bought a local nurseries, and maybe yours, too. Everybody cross your fingers that they have Ferndinand Pichard...or Rainbow...or Careless Love...

Does very disease resistant mean BS resistant?

When I'm researching a rose, I generally take "disease-resistant" to mean resistant to BS and other diseases, unless the source specifies that, for instance, it is "suspectible to mildew" or something like that. Where I live, BS is the problem, so that is primarily what I'm looking for, but I don't want to invite a mildew magnet into my garden either. So far, my roses have performed pretty much like the descriptions said they would, but I always check multiple sources: the catalog description, HMF, this forum, Dave's forum, disease-resistant lists available a number of places online, etc. I like finding gardening blogs where real gardeners assess their own roses. I start with the nursery description, but I first check out how they rate some roses I already grow. If their descriptions vary considerably from my first-hand experience, then I take all their descriptions, including the new rose I'm looking for, with a grain of salt. Or I do some spot-checking to see if they list almost all roses as disease-resistant--in which case I know it is a lot of catalog hype. I like it best when the nursery catalog rarely makes disease-resistant claims--that way, when they really praise a rose for being so "healthy," I figure they might even actually mean it. In other words, learning how to "read" nursery catalog copy for what it really means is a learned skill (and I'm still working on it). I also check the descriptions at several nursery catalogs to see if there is any significant difference. However, if they all lift the same description from the same source, then I treat them all as just ONE source. At HMF, I also check the "comments" section to see if gardeners have included their own real-life experiences with that rose. For places like this forum, I do what most of the above posters do--pay more attention to posters from geographical areas/mini-climates close to my own. Since there aren't that many Kansas Zone 6 posters here, I take a more regional approach (Missouri and Oklahoma, for instance--I live fairly close to both) and look closely at their assessments. However, I don't rule out other assessments. Since I'm not looking for the ONE source that will answer my questions about disease and other matters, I can learn a lot from posters from other areas also. It becomes kind of a balancing act, weighing all the pros and cons based on zone, etc. Like Molineux, I find most California info won't help me at all since many there have no BS to speak of and that is a big question for me. On the other hand, I do not live in BS h*ll, so I don't give as much weight to a comment from a place that has high BS pressures (unless they claim the rose was healthy despite the BS pressures). Like anything else, some evidence is more telling. Weighing the worth of the evidence becomes a major part of the process. If all the sources disagree a lot, I rate the rose "questionable" and avoid it. Actually, I think researching the rose is part of the fun of rose gardening--especially in the early winter when I can't get into my garden. LOL. Kate

I know this is an old thread but its been very good and useful so I thought I'd chime in. All the roses i recommend have been mentioned here but I live very close to you in Zone 10 Florida so I thought I'd let you know what has worked in my garden. I have over 50 roses and my best performer is by far Belinda's Dream (you probably have it by now, if not, get it!). Always in bloom all year round, doesn't mind heat/humidity or rain has perfectly formed blooms AND its fragrant. It has it all! One of my other good performers so far have been some Ausitns. My BEST bloomer is Huntington rose, but it does get black spot a bit. I don't spray her so i just prune her a bit after every other flush and she keeps bouncing back. Queen of Sweden has been excellent. Not as big a bloomer as Huntington but NO black spot at all. She does grow TALL though (huntington grows WIDE), So Far she has stayed very narrow and tall. Jubilee celebration has done well but she is too new to tell if she'll get through the rainy season without too much BS. Wollerton Old Hall, great fragrance great BS resistance but bloom color is not my cup of tea (kind of a tan/beige). Alnwick rose has done well too as well as Abraham Darby (tried and true). All my Austins are in planters though, none in the ground. As for HT roses my best performers have been Mr. Lincoln, Olympiad (very good), Gold Medal (also very good), Queen Elizabeth (kind of gangly but blooms alot), iceberg and brilliant pink iceberg are great but grow wide, not tall (they stay short though). Pretty much all my HT get some black spot in the rainy season but i just trim them come fall and they do well all the way until the following May. If you are looking for a more bushy rose try the new KORDES varieties. I have had ABSOLUTELY no black spot on Lion's Fairy Tale and Mandarin Ice, and I hear all the Fairy Tales are just as good as lions. I'm getting a few more this year from that series. OH also don't forget BUCKS roses. Superb! I have Polonaise and Golden Princess and both are great with BS (very very little) but by far the best one has been Quietness! She has NO BS and beautiful fragrant blooms. Very Fragrant! Some roses to stay away from would be Oklahoma, Double delight (every one raves about her but she's a BS magnet in my garden) Angle Face (same). Cherish (love her blooms but same BS issues). I grow most of my roses in planters so you may need to see if you can find any of these on Fortuniana RS. I highly recommend the Kordes ones though, they have really thrived own root with NO disease they stand out like champs. They almost don't even look like rose bushes they are so leafy. Duchess du Brabant has been another good one. She does get a little BS but she seems to shake it off quickly. I just also got Rosette DeLizzy and clotilde soupert but they are still babies so too soon to tell. Good luck and let me know what does well in your garden!

Re-reading this thread once again. I just thought I'd point out how much difference subtle climate variations can make in the health of roses. I'm not sure exactly where Luxrosa lives, but we are both in the general Bay Area, me in the South Bay. Celine Forestier was on her list of very healthy roses. It is one of my worst for PM, and its spot is going to be given to Bouquet d'Or when that rose arrives. My fingers are crossed that it will do well here. I fell in love with it from Paparoseman's pictures. Of course he lives up in the PNW, a climate completely different from anywhere in the sunny Bay Area. Rosefolly

I'm just a bit north of you around Cullman. I have to spray all my HTs to keep them clean of blackspot. Some not very often, but there aren't any HTs I currently grow that are completely no spray for me (I have around 75 HTs). I have heard good things about both Beverly and Francis Meilland being very disease resistant, and they could possibly be grown no spray here...but I haven't tried either yet. I do have some floribundas (Weeks Easy to Love series), some polyanthas and some OGRs (teas, chinas & noisettes) that I grow no spray if you are interested in something other than an HT.

Do you follow the Redneck Rosarian (http://www.redneckrosarian.com/)? He's in Birmingham (he's one of the directors of the Birmingham Rose Society). He grows Francis Meilland. I don't see Grand Amore on his rose list, but I know he posted a picture of it last summer. You could ask how they do for him and if he has other suggestions.

Thanks, pat bama. I would love to see some of your roses and will check out your page.I have seen postings on the web by the Redneck Rosarian who obviously grows magnificent roses in my area. I am new at growing roses. Used to have knock outs which performed beautifully, but I am ready for another look and a bigger challenge so I am giving my knockouts away to friends and want to try some hybrid teas and other floribundas. My guess is that no matter what rose I try I will have to spray. Thank you so much for the advice.

I think you will really enjoy growing roses here. Roses seem to love our climate and really flourish except for the blackspot issue and those dreaded Japanese beetles in early summer. Be forewarned that most roses will get much larger here than their tags say they do. If you want to try some floribundas, I would highly recommend the Easy to Love roses from WeeksÃ¢ÂÂ¦they all do very well for me and are as no care as Knockouts here. Easy Going and Easy Does It seem to be the best for no spray. The others will spot a little without spray, but not badly and doesn't effect their ability to bloom their heads off. Website link for info on them is below. I love all my HTs, but I do spray them when necessary. Some easy ones for our area that don't require too much spray are Double Delight, Dolly Parton, Chris Evert, Pope John Paul II and Grand Dame. All the Peace varieties do well here, but require frequent spraying. Same for Fragrant Cloud and Rio Samba. My best lavender is Royal Amethyst, but it does need frequent spraying, too. For local rose sources, HannaÃ¢ÂÂs Garden Shop in Birmingham has a good selection. A link to their current inventory is below. Some of those are left over from last year and should be on clearance now. I picked up several for $5.00 each last February and those are doing great. Bennett nursery (Mr. Bennett is the sweetest and most knowledgeable man around) and The Greenery, both in Huntsville, are also good rose sources. They have websites, but donÃ¢ÂÂt list their inventory. Bennetts roses aren't in yet, but should be within the next couple of weeks. The Greenery plants theirs from bare roots and do have theirs out now, but won't sell them for about another month. Petals from the Past, just south of you in Jemison, is a wonderful source for antiques roses, and they carry a good many moderns in the spring, as well, but those arenÃ¢ÂÂt listed on their website. The owner there is SO helpful. He carries Quietness, a Buck rose, that's on my wish list. It supposedly is very disease resistant here and grows much like an HT.
Let me know if there is a rose you are interested in and have questions about. I grow about 130 roses now...mixture of old and new...it's possible I'll have the rose and have local experience with it and pics I could share.

Dizzy, Elina is no spray in my hot humid garden. Belinda's Dream, while not an HT, is wonderful here no spray and makes a good cut flower. She's a heavy bloomer. Mr. Lincoln is no spray in my garden.

Wow Pat! That garden of yours is absolutely magnificent! Thank you so much for sharing the picture and alsothis wonderful information. I am familiar with both Hannah's and Petals from the Past, and I was actually considering doing some antique roses in place of or in addition to the floribundas, so I will definitely check them out. I was not familiar with the Huntsville stores, but am glad to know about them. I love garden shop hopping. Thanks also to Floridarose for your suggestions! I am getting my bed prepared and ready now. I can't wait to go shopping.

Pacific Celebration (new last yr. on fort., wasn't expecting such a clean bush)
Grande Amore (gets some BS closer to fall)
