Old Garden Roses - St. Louis Area

I recently moved back to the St. Louis area and am living in an apartment that has a small back yard. The landlord allows us to do a little bit of gardening and I was thinking about planting a rose bush. I don't have a lot of space, so i am looking for something that will have a lot of bang for the buck and will give lots of flowers the first year. Also, I am would need something that would be able to be transplanted when I move. The rose I am interested in is the Autumn Damask (I love strong scented roses!!), but I just can't find anyone locally who sells it. Since I am on a budget, I can't afford expensive mail order. Does anyone know of any places in the St. Louis area that sell old garden roses? Are there any roses that would be comparable the Autumn Damask that I should consider? Thanks for any information you can offer!

Autumn Damask gets very big. It would probably be difficult to move once established.

Given your circumstances, I would recommend that you plant your rose in a large pot, resin or plastic if you get hard frosts that would break clay ones.

I don't know who sells old roses in your area, though there may be someone who does. In many parts of the country there are no local nurseries that sell them. Have you considered Chamblees? Their roses are very moderately priced.

Marchesa Boccella is an exceptional Damask Perpetual, very fragrant and repeats very well.

I don't know whether it would be easy to transplant, however.

Some of the David Austin roses are relatively compact, might be some possibilities with them. They are very fragrant roses, with old fashioned style blooms.

The link below is what came up when I searched the Missouri Botanical Gardens website for vegetables. There are a few articles there that might help you. I noticed they have a vegetable garden called the Bank of America garden where they have planted vegetable varieties that do well in the St. Louis area. I doubt that would be much to see right now but it would be a good place to visit this summer. I'm in southwest Missouri. Our Master Gardener society here has a public display garden that includes a vegetable garden. There may be something similar there and they should have a hotline number that you can call. The master gardeners volunteer to answer questions. The website for the one in your area is stlmg.com. Gardenweb has a forum for Midwest Gardening. That sounds like a great project! You have an amazing resource in St. Louis. As you probably know, the St. Louis botanical gardens are world class. They have an outstanding Japanese Garden. This information is 5 years old but, a friend (who lives by Forest Park) talked to the curator of the Japanese Garden who agreed to transform her back yard. Over a weekend it was completed and is amazing. Her pond is much smaller than what you have planned but it is integrated perfectly in her new landscape. So, I'd take a trip to the gardens one day and chat with the staff and inquire about contractors. Something like "would you happen to know anyone who could help me ..." With luck you might find one of the most knowledgeable and highly skilled landscape architects in the country take your job. If not they would certainly know who they use when they have a project to do. I'm partial to Japanese gardens but every garden there is first rate. Found good conifer nursery in St. Louis area

Just wanted to give this a quick bump for the couple of St. Louis peeps around here. Today I discovered the conifer area in The Word Outdoor Emporium nursery in Wentzville. (I've been there before, but not looking at conifers). By far, the best conifer selection I've seen in this area. If anyone knows of better, please let me know where so I can check it out! :-) Anyway, they had more stuff than I can mention. Several gold/yellow varieties of Hinoki, Thuja, etc.. plus some fairly good sized Picea abies 'little gem' and other neat stuff. Weeping Serbian Spruce. Baby Blue Eyes. Teddy. The list goes on. It's nothing like what we'd find at nurseries in Oregon, of course, but for those in the area, worth checking out.

Ditto what Krista said. Welcome, STL novice, and I hope you stick around and share. You know what they say about Lays potato chips does apply to roses... bet you can't plant just one.

Thanks for the info! I think I may try a few in pots, and maybe one or two small ones in the ground. Oddly enough, the other day I was at Big Lots and they had Paul Neyron roses for sale. They were $3.00, so I figured I didn't have much to lose by trying. I can imagine that in pots they would need extra water in the heat of summer, but what about winter? Can roses withstand being completely frozen? I'm going to look into the David Austin roses. They are fairly easy to find. Sherry - I know what you mean!!! :)
