My Louis Phillipe froze solid in his clay pot this winter. I now noticed that one stubby litle cane is still alive. I re-potted and am hoping he springs forth from the roots. I'm betting he will. Old Blush was also frozen solid. It was deader than a door nail....or so I thought. It was one of the pots I hadn't dumped out yet due to lack of time. It sat baking in the sun with a few other dead potted roses. Lo and behold I now have a seven inch Old Blush with a bud on it. Amazing. Sandy

Mrs. BR Cant is supposed to do very well here, and I have several on their own roots that look extremely promising. Her root system is massive. All are planted near concrete (about 6 ft. away), which is supposed to help keep any nematode populations down. It can be almost impossible to find any OGR on fortuniana, so I am planting what I want own root, and if they ever start faltering, I will either get cuttings custom grafted, or learn to do it myself. There are people that have had success with some of them on their own roots. Depends on what's going on in your yard. I've never had any issues with my lawn or any of my other shrubs, so maybe that's a good sign.

Hi, Melissa. Two things I'm thinking...one, that the bloom shape and petals look very much like LP, even though it is pink. And two, if you have definitely had "regular" looking Louis Phillipe blooms on this plant before the pink one opened up...could it be a sport? Is it possible, do you think, that you may actually have a PINK LP sport that could be propagated from cuttings of that particular stem? I'm pretty ignorant about propagation in general. Well, I know all about PEOPLE, you understand, being a MOM and all, but plants are another matter. However, I seem to remember reading that a sport can be just one stem on a regular plant that does something odd, and that it can be the beginning of a whole new variety of that species. I've never heard of a pink Louis Phillipe, and since no one else has said THEY have, I'm guessing there isn't one. Until now??? Possibly???? It's a thought! Wouldn't that be fun!!! Marcia

I believe you have Pink Pet. There is some further confusion between Caldwell Pink and Pink Pet. They probably are the same rose. There is a climbing version, too. LP is cherry red with a lighter pinkish center, very cupped and somewhat full, though not packed with petals. If yours has A. a white eye or B. white splotches in the eye or C. sparsely petaled, it is most likely another china. Country Side Roses has good pics for comparison. You can see how similar they are. Scroll and click catalog and click Chinas. This is another extremely good rose for Florida. Low growing, scentless and reblooms in flushes. "The Cracker Rose" is a great marketing catch phrase and misused frequently. But... it also COULD be an old time folk name for any good Florida Rose. To further confuse the issue, I have both. The one I bought as Caldwell Pink and the one I bought as Pink Pet. My PP has a slight ruffled and pinked look to the petals. The difference is VERY slight to my eye.
