Found good conifer nursery in St. Louis area

I know we have a few posters from the St. Louis area who frequent this forum, and the topic of nurseries came up in a previous thread. The general consensus seems to be the unusual conifers are slim pickings at local nurseries around here, making mail order the best bet. But today I made a trip to Garden Heights Nursery on Big Bend. They had:

1) Thuja plicata whipcord

2) Thuja Occ. golden tuffet

3) Thuja Occ. fire chief

4) 6 foot tall Hinoki Aurea

5) Hinoki Golden Fernspray

6) Picea abies echiniformis and other miniatures

7) Hoopsii

They also have a plant "wish list" where you can give them a plant name and they will call you when it comes in with no obligation to buy. I put "Picea glauca pendula" on the list.

Good question! If this sort of weather keeps up, we'll have the longest planting season in recorded history. lol.

I think of the Buck roses for your part of the country. One of the reliable ones is Care Free Beauty. Its also an Earthkind rose (chosen for their ability to survive on neglect). Its pink, with some scent, and very healthy. Blooms its head off. Other pinks to consider are Earth Song, and Quietness. Another excellent pink (not a Bucks's rose) is Bayse's Blueberry. Its a single, and very healthy without any thorns. Some scent too. Chamblee's rose nursery website has lots of info on both Buck roses, and Earthkind roses.Antique rose emporium also presents some good choices. Just a start. There are lots of other suggestions, and others will chime in.

Favorite nurseries in St. Louis?

I guess it depends on what types of plants you are looking to purchase. I have an extensive perennial garden and am always searching for new plant varieties and cultivars to add to my garden. Gilberg's was my go to nursery, however they closed last year. Then I found Sugar Creek Gardens in Kirkwood off Manchester road and I have been very pleased with the selections & variety of plants they offer. Staff is friendly and helpful (and I'll point out that I drive from St. Peters to visit them). I also use many native plants in the garden and buy a majority from Missouri Wildflowers Nursery just south of Jefferson City. They do take orders and bring your plants to the Kirkwood Farmers market for pick up on Saturdays in April, May and September. They do have a web site, but I think I am only able to attach one link per post. So - wwwdotmowildflowersdotnet/ - remove the "dot" and place in "." to see their web site. Hi Dave, Sorry to say that Luc passed a few years ago. Carol brought in Tex and his wife from Texas and they are joined together to make Florida Colors even bigger and better. Tex and Kay have added a lot to help Carol Build this nursery. Carol still does grafting and Tex does as well. The nursery looks wonderful.... Luc will always be missed.. Going on a few days trip to St. Louis next week and wondered if there are any must stop at green houses or nursery's in the area. Won't have alot of room to haul stuff back but if its a must have I'll find the space!

Just wanted to give this a quick bump for the couple of St. Louis peeps around here. Today I discovered the conifer area in The Word Outdoor Emporium nursery in Wentzville. (I've been there before, but not looking at conifers). By far, the best conifer selection I've seen in this area. If anyone knows of better, please let me know where so I can check it out! :-)

Anyway, they had more stuff than I can mention. Several gold/yellow varieties of Hinoki, Thuja, etc.. plus some fairly good sized Picea abies 'little gem' and other neat stuff. Weeping Serbian Spruce. Baby Blue Eyes. Teddy. The list goes on.

It's nothing like what we'd find at nurseries in Oregon, of course, but for those in the area, worth checking out.
