Going on 15...let it go?

I have a 15 year old healthy variegated weigela that I need to move or remove.

I do have a spot (similar enviorment that it is in now) but I'm debating if its worth the work to cut it back, dig up the rootball and replant do to its age and ornamental value.

Thoughts? Let it go or move it?

if pruned thru proper shrub pruning.. its age is irrelevant ...

siting similarity is also irrelevant ...

frankly... the cost/benefit ratio ... is your labor worth saving it???

if so.. cut to about 3 feet .... everything... then dig the plant.. using the stubs to drag it across the yard ...

then more properly prune it after its all planted ....

its deciduous.. so hard pruning is not a problem ... you probably wont get any flowers this year ...

its one of those that you can basically run over with the truck

if its worth your time and labor.. go for it....

Don't these things typically croak at 20 years?

If I replant it (properly) and can expect at least 10 years well I guess it worth my time.

I've pruned it properly the last 3 years...guessing since the previous owners planted a burning bush, weigela and purple sandcherry in a row that is 10' wide they had no clue what they heck they were doing.

I'm cutting down the burning bush and sandcherry they are definatly not worth saving.

Korean Maple, Hydrangea and perrenials will now grace this area.

I definitely like a 4-season climate and, in my younger years, enjoyed the snowy season. However, once I became disabled, enjoying snowy-season activities ended! Now snowy-season is hazard-season and cabin-fever-season :-( A friend with the same medical condition as I have had a fall on black ice earlier in the winter - she broke one knee-cap and damaged the other! Another friend fell on ice around the community mailbox while walking her dog in one of the recent storms. Luckily she was wearing several layers of bulky winter clothes that gave her some protection when she fell flat on her back and hit her head! She didn't have a cell phone with her and there was no one else around. It took her awhile to find an ice-free area where she could safely get up. I never walk alone in winter - but I also never go out unless the road is bare. I've spent far too much time indoors this winter and am very bored! :-) Like floral_uk, I don't do well in heat either so late May/early June and September/early October are perfect weather condition times for me. I'd be happy if the snowy part of winter started a week or so before Christmas and wound up around the end of January - enough to give a white Christmas and satisfy any 'winter wonderland' viewing cravings without the drawbacks of months of restrictions on activity!

Wolf 36" gas range - Go or No go?

I also own a Wolf product. I have the 36" dual fuel range. The burners are exactly the same as the all gas is now. I would certainly look at BlueStar. In looking at burners, you will hear the term "open burners" and "sealed burners". Different manufacturers use this term to mean different things but it refers to the burner tray and whether it comes apart for cleaning. Wolf used to have a "semi open" burner with a tray that came apart for cleaning but changed to the sealed burner in 2013 on their gas ranges. BlueStar has some other very important features that some cooks prefer. It has a star shape. This is great for cast iron or steel pans, which are poorer conductors of heat, as it applies heat more evenly if the pan is sized to the burner. This shows the BS and Wolf. Another difference is that Wolf is capped and BS is not. The capped and sealed burner were developed with idea that it would be easier to clean but many BS owners would disagree with that. The cap causes the flame to flare out on highest heat. Wolf has the dual stacked burners so the flare is less than something like five star or even Thermador. With high heat, this can impact performance. I don't mind the flare with Wolf's burner because I am using big frying pans but some want to keep the high heat more to the middle of the pan. BS has burners of different sizes. Service is important unless you can work on appliances yourself. One brand or another may or may not have service in your area. Wolf has great service during the warranty. After the warranty, you must use their service people. In my experience, I had the interior blue chipping at 4.5 years(an issue for at least 10 years) and they would not give me a price to fix it only that it would be a minimum of $800 for labor and would only guarantee the new liner for a year. BS has had some good and some bad reports for service over the years. I dont think it is the paint that is your problem. The problem is the lack of light despite a good sized window. Once those cabinets are taken down (had the same problem here), you will notice a huge difference. I also had lights put in all 4 corners of my dining room, and a new chandelier put in the center of the room, right over the table. What was once a dark dreary place, is now full of light, and its bright and cheerful, and used every day. I didnt go dark with my paint. I used Sherwin Williams Blue Iris (its really aqua), in the dining room, and kitchen and the hallway. It is one of my very favorite colors. Wait til the cabinets are down and gone, and see if yours doesnt brighten up a whole lot. I also agree, you need a nice colorful rug on the floor under the table. The table also should be centered with the light fixture above, and maybe change out the light fixture to one that hangs down. More of a chandelier type. Here are the proper heights for hanging a chandelier over a dining room table, depending upon your ceiling height. Hang a chandelier approximately 30 to 34 inches over a table with an 8 foot ceiling height. If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, mount the chandelier an additional 3 inches higher for each foot of ceiling.

I can see were EG would not work here. A darker, warmer gray might but I would keep it simple myself. I think your cabinets are lovely. It’s very hard to tell how any color will look in a space viewing it on a monitor! Nearly impossible actually. This is just a suggestion. You could try a neutral, lighter color such as BM barely beige. It still has warmth but isn’t yellow. Here it is compared to your current color. See how it looks with your trim though, you may have to repaint that. You could do the trim in the same color in a higher sheen.

I've seen wiegelas that are close to 50 years old :-) Is it worth going to the effort of digging and moving? I probably wouldn't. Too many newer and smaller selections to choose from if yours is 15 y.o. and I like changing things out :-) If it's just too big for the current location, I'd say get rid of it and pick another, smaller one for there or elsewhere.

I've seen a at least one wiegela that is probably 50 yrs old. To me, I'd move it just to see if a) I can and b) if it will live.

Waas I wish I were near you because I would take it if you didn't want it. I just started my weigelas a couple of years ago and I love them! I would totally try to save it.

Ken where were you last year when I was worrying about my weigelas coming up!! Maybe I should just send you an email directly if I have questions from now on on all my plants in my yard :) lol or maybe I will just post all my questions on the Hosta forum from now on!

That would be cool, then you can take the burning bush, lilac, hibicus and arctic willows that are getting the axe!
Although I am keeping the weigela, someone above said they'd move it to see if would live...I'm up for the challenge.

I moved a koreanspice viburnum (from the same area/same age) and I think the thing may live...very anxious to see how it rebounds this spring.

I still can't get over the nut that thought planting a burning bush, varigated weigela, koreanspice viburnum and purple sandcherry within a 15' X 8' bed was a good idea.

heh heh -I think I'm that nut! Someday someone will be asking "What idiot thought it would be a good idea to put this beech tree, stewartia, ninebark, rhododeneron, viburnum and 2 contorted hazelnuts in (about) a 15' X 8' bed !?"

In my defense it is a DWARF rhododendron and I was planning on moving the ninebark.... but I just remembered there are also two fothergillas there too. hmmmm
