What (Currently) Would You Name As The Three Most Beautiful Roses
Comments (88)WOW! What beautiful pictures! Thanks everybody for sharing them. I was caught up in the fun of this, thinking of what rose flower I liked best, when I had a thought - most of the responses and pictures here focus on the beauty of the individual blooms. This is understandable, but it is also how 20th century hybridizers thought, and unfortunately it resulted in the development of: spindly upright ugly bushes; new roses with no fragrance whatever; & roses so disease prone that everybody had to spray poisons all over their gardens every 2 weeks! So, I would prefer a different definition of "beauty" - roses that are beautiful not only in their individual blossoms, but as an overall bush. Banksia lutea, as it bursts into bloom all over town, suddenly appearing all over large trees, and dripping down from on high, would certainly be my favorite. All of the teas are graceful shrubs if you have enough room for them, and also have gorgeous flowers. MAC is beautiful in my garden because it has climbed up several old plum & fig trees, and I can see blossoms from my bedroom window as I speak, seemingly floating all over the top of our fruit tree forrest. This has been going on non-stop since March! Ditto Cl Peace, which is now producing blossoms all over the top of a huge pomegranite bush - its third bloom flush so far this year. I have a dark red/purple many many petaled mystery rose that I found in our garden (from where it was growing inside of a Japanese quince bush, I would say it was planted at least in the 1930s) which I rooted & planted out by the street in the sun, right next to the sidewalk. It blooms for 10 months of the year, and is amazingly fragrant with that heady "old rose" fragrance. Our street is a busy street, as is the sidewalk. This rose is only about 4-5 feet tall, so the blossoms are very accessible to passer- byes who want to smell it. I enjoy watching people's reactions when I am near there weeding or whatever - it is truly a "beautiful" rose, as it startles people into a brief happiness! Comments (63)And I would have to add that "The Most Beautiful Rose" title belongs to more than one rose . . . Because as with Real Estate, roses and other growing things are dependent upon "LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION." So, while I truly believe that 'Evelyn' is The Most Beautiful Rose in Patrick's 6B conditions, and (per the late Col Mel Hulse) 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' is The Most Beautiful Rose in San Jose, CA's 9B conditions . . . NEITHER is beautiful here, in my Sunset Zone 23 garden, SdlM mildews so badly, no bloom opens. And Evelyn? She's so happy that she has to grow to between 12 and 14 ft. before she deigns to set a bloom. So, what IS The Most Beautiful Rose in my garden? Danged if I know. I guess, what ever's blooming today? This was 'Golden Celebration' last night, however . . ....See MoreName the Ten Most Beautiful Roses
Comments (51)This one isn't quite as tough for me as the modern list, since fewer categories of OGRs thrive in zone 5 that have individually lovely blooms (as opposed to say the Hybrid musks), except ramblers and Albas/Gallicas and the like that are too much the large once-bloomer for my garden space. I'll throw in some pictures to state my case more effectively than my words. Apricot: Carding Mill - a lovely dark to light apricot even in the sun. Bicolor: I'll go for subtlety here rather than the more garish stripes of things like Variegata di Bolognia, not to mention the much better rebloom of this Vick's Caprice. Mauve: A rose that introduced me to the Austins with a bang and is still among the more "purple" of his roses for me, William Shakespeare 2000. Orange: Hmm, not a color that abounds in OGRs outside of apricots, but I'll go with Gertrude Jekyll, who's at least on the coral side of the color scheme. Light/warm Pink: The Austins have all the fun among OGRs in this category for me, but they also get plenty of glory, so I'll go with the unsung hero of a tea who's brave enough to bloom and survive for years in zone 5, in this case Mrs. BR Cant: Dark/cool pinks: Both for scent and sheer exuberance of bloom, I'm going with Madame Isaac Periere. Red: Another winner in the scent department, but the blooms are much lovelier than this poor picture shows, even though Frances Dubreuil is only an honorary OGR with a secret identity as mild-mannered cub reporter Barcelona. White: Definitely Mme Alfred Carriere, for exuberance as well as beauty. Yellow: I would never presume to come between Patrick and Kate in their equally convincing arguments for the loveliness of Molineux and GC, so I'll side step it with a lighter yellow and go with Teasing Georgia. Other: Most beautiful hybrid Musk - Francesca. I said these hybrid musks aren't usually beautiful individual flowers but better en masse, but I think Francesca can hold her own on the flower side of things too. Cynthia...See MorePlease Show Your "Most" Beautiful Rose (s)
Comments (269)Carol, Eglantyne is sooo ruffly and a great bloomer! Eglanryne will probably bloom all summer for you same as me because we dont get as hot as Diane’s summers. Diane’s Evelyn is a beauty! Can’t wait to see Evelyn in my garden! You will love them both!!!. i am sure you can find some Austin supplier, hopefully from Phoenix P. Rain water does do well on roses! They love that soft ”no chenicals,” water. Maybe you need a water softener on your hose? Is your water usually ”hard?” D Austins are supposed to bloom more than most rosess-they are shrub roses w/ abundant blooms. I have DAs: PAoK, Anne Bolyne, Desdemona, Harlow Carr, Munstead W., Eglantyne, Abe, Princess Anne, Lich. Angel, B Cadfael, Mary Rose, Heritage, Strawberry Hill, James Galway, & Mayflower and they all bloom constantly. Mary Rose blooms the most, but a few are too new to show their stuff much, yet. I ordered Evelyn, Emily Bronte, Eutacia Vye, Roald Dahl, Silas Marner, Queen of Sweden-we will see how they perform. Carol, Could Straw ship Austin roses to you? I suppose you both wouod deal with shipping fliwers border certification....See MoreMaryl (Okla. Zone 7a)
