spray cocktail roses left over spray how to dispose of
Comments (1)Sounds like you may be using a hose-end sprayer. These are not good for applying pesticides because they mix so inaccurately. Pump-up tank sprayers are inexpensive and reliable. To dispose of pesticides that are out of the container, the best of bad options is to mix with gallons of water and spread it widely around. Most pesticides will break down after exposure to light, air, and bacteria. Also, dilution reduces toxicity. Pesticides in their container may be wrapped and sent to the dump. It's not a good idea to spray insecticides routinely--regulars here, along with most experienced rose growers, don't do that....See MoreHow does your garbage disposal affect your septic?
Comments (20)scapulous My DW gave me this book as a gift (a sort of joke) but it explains septic systems and how to care for them in very simple terms. The Septic System Owner's Manual (Paperback) by Lloyd Kahn (Author), Blair Allen (Author), Julie Jones (Author), Peter Aschwanden In our new home (our first time on a septic system), we chose to wire for the disposal but to not install it. We wanted to try living without first to see what it would be like. It really is not a big deal - the stainless sinks we have came with a deep basket cup that catches food waste but does not clog and we dump the food waste into a trash can. It reminds me when I was a kid - before disposals became popular and affordable - when I had to do the dishes as a chore. You get used to it. The problem with the disposal is conditioning yourself to not use it the way you might on public sewer. There are a lot of materials (like apple skins) that are not good for the septic - see the book for the list. I was worried that we would forget, or get sloppy, or have guests over that would not ask - and we might run into problems. There are other items you need to be careful of too - the one's that often get flushed down the toilet. See the book, no need to get gross here. We spent a small fortune on our septic system. I want to make sure it will never fail. This has become a real issue in the county where we live where septic systems have been failing frequently mainly due to what people throw in them, some due to bad designs. Most of the issues stem from folks who lived on public sewer all their lives and then moved to the country to septic - and were never told how septic systems work and how to care for them. My septic system did not come with an ower's manual - so the book really is a great reference guide. Best of luck living in the country - it really is nice. Except for the bears and snakes - but we will get used to them too....See MoreNever had a garbage disposal - should I get one?
Comments (35)I've always had a GD and I wouldn't want to be without one. Ours (even growing up) have never been smelly, and the few jams I've experienced personally or remember as a kid were easily taken care of with the hex key that comes with the GD. Turn the bolt thingy on the bottom of the GD and wha-la, no more jam. Super easy. We compost, but only veggies. And we don't eat a lot of meat so the meat that goes down our GD is small remains of fish or chicken. Like others, what we put down the GD are cereal remains, rice, pasta etc... Never any bones. Those don't grind up well and the sound is awful! I didn't even know there were disposals that you had to cover before using. I've always had the kind w/a switch. My kids have never stuck their hands down the drain, and I never did as a kid either, so I think if you make it clear not to, your kids will be fine....See MoreDoes any one grow Hermosa Old Rose?
Comments (32)For any of you who may grow 'Hermosa' on 'Fortuniana' rootstock: It is unique, in my experience, in that it forms an imperfect graft union. The plant grows beautifully for 3-4 years, then one day, completely without warning, in a wind storm, it snaps off cleanly at the union and rolls away like a decorative tumbleweed, leaving a stump of 'Fortuniana' behind. Because of that, we always try to keep a back-up plant in the greenhouses, as an emergency replacement. Of course on its own roots it would not do that. But I put it on 'Fortuniana' since it makes such a nice plant for those few years. I know of no other rose that has that weird habit....See Morekittymoonbeam
