I have never had a garden of any type and want one
Comments (5)Also read Mel Bartholomew's "Square Foot Gardening"; it's basic common sense for home veg gardens and excellent for beginners. Search in this forum for 'lasagna' since soil is the first and most important component of any garden. Also search for 'new beds'; there has been quite a lot of information already posted. Read the FAQs (click the tab at the top of this page). Believe the tip that says "start small." Gardening can be like walking into a Chef's Expo - you won't get overstuffed (or overwhelmed) if you take your gardening in very small bites. Plan. You don't have to follow the plan, but the act of thinking out what you want and what steps will be required to get what you want, will help prepare you for the reality of accomplishing those steps. If you like formality, you probably won't like cottage gardens [and vice versa], so think about what you are comfortable with when you plan. Don't fib to yourself. If you can't comfortably lift a 25 pound bag of groceries, don't try to lift a 30 lb rock. If you only have Saturday mornings free to play in the garden, don't attempt to do a full day's work in that one morning -- first, it can't be done; and second, it's frustrating to fail. Gardens provide lots of other opportunities for frustration, you don't need to invent any. You will find almost everything takes two to ten times longer than you expect; and until you've built up the appropriate muscles, most gardening activities are going to be physically tiring, so go easy on yourself. Dream. We all do, and some of us actually manage to make our dreams reality. Most of us don't, and that's okay because sometimes the dream is just a guideline, and the detours we take make the result even more interesting. Enjoy. Make a point of walking your area every day or two; just to look (altho as you age, jotting notes in a small notebook is darned helpful to remember what you saw; in fact it's helpful even to young'uns -- it's shocking how fast you will forget just which plant looked good when). Make another point to sit back and do nothing but look around for at least a half-hour every week. You'll find those weeds or mis-placed plants which irritate you when viewed up close often blend in very nicely when viewed from a distance - and if they don't, you'll be rested and ready to move them. Sitting time is also a good time to dream, maybe about putting in paths, or a birdbath, or a shrub that blooms in a particular season, or a way to use vegs in the floral border. Whatever, gardening is meant to be enjoyed....See MoreJust destroyed my garbage disposal, so now I need a new one.
Comments (9)I can say from experience that the Insinkerator Evolution Pro Excel is very quiet. Much quieter than any other disposal I've experienced, although a tad louder than a Miele dishwasher. Even the rubber collar at the sink drain is designed to cause flowing water to block upward propagating sound. (This does lead to having to push smaller items such as piles of tea leaves through it rather than expecting them to flow through as they would have on the older design drain collars.) NOTE however, that the distance from the drain to the exit port is slightly larger than for a standard disposal, and if your plumbing trap weir location is just adequate for a standard design, it may not be easily adaptable to the Evolution. If your weir is presently at least an inch or so below the port of your present disposal, then it should be ok. I have found good prices at PEX Supply. kas...See Moregarbage disposal keep old one or buy new?
Comments (16)A dissenting viewpoint. When it does need to be replaced, will you be doing that yourself? Then keep it until it dies. But if you don't DIY, you'll pay in the remodel to have the old one installed and then when you replace it, you'll pay again for the new installation (and that will be a minimum one hour charge, if your plumber is like mine). Further, I went from a 1/2HP Insinkerator Badger to a 3/4HP Insinkerator Evolution ProCompact, and it was a huge improvement. So if it's relatively new, then keeping it makes sense, but if you may only have a couple more years, ditch it now and move up. In the past, my Insinkerators usually lasted about 10 years. Maybe I'm hard on them....See MoreGarbage disposal: where should it be installed on a double sink?
Comments (1)On the one hand it can be argued that there is only one prescribed manner to install a center waste or end waste kit and any attempt to circumvent that is hack work at best. On the other hand, it can also be argued the if the drain, waste & vent piping under your sink contradicts with the placement of a trash can, then it is the trash can that needs to find another location. Now in regards to your question about piping the smaller bowl directly outside to conserve water: Only in California would people intentionally pour bacteria laden effluent on their garden or repeatedly starve the watercloset flush volume on the notion that they must conserve water, then in the next breathe demand a 200 or 300 gallon soaker tub or a shower with 4 to 8 shower heads and body sprays and not give that water consumption a second thought....See MoreRelated Professionals
