Question re Austin Roses in Ontario

Is there a good source in Canada for Austin roses that are on rootstock for this area or should I be looking for own root plants? I hesitate to order directly from Austin because they are in Texas and the plants may not be suitable for my are which is central Ontario near the Great Lakes.

I remember Pickering (on multiflora rootstock) carries some Austin's, but I don't think you will get a very full selection.

You might check Palatine (also on multiflora) to see if they offer a few Austins.

I've ordered from both Canadian nurseries and think they are both great.

Hortico probably carries some also, but a lot of posters on this forum have had some complaints at times about Hortico--so buyer beware.

I suspect David Austin in Texas gives you the widest choice of Austins. Those would be on Dr. Huey rootstock. Austin's catalog says they are mostly hardy to Zone 5, so Austin must be assuming his roses are being sold in Zone 5. I really don't think you will have problems with the roses directly from Austin's in Texas.

I've ordered from David Austin and have had good success with the roses. I live in southeastern Michigan, same zone as Ontario.

Kate, our shy Pilgrims are indeed exquisite so I suppose they're worth all the hoping and waiting. pelicanhead, I was just looking around the garden and wanted to share that two of my 1st DA year roses are upright bloomers. Boscobel & Heathcliff. Boscobel is a wonderful repeat bloomer, very fragrant, just a really swell rose. Heathcliff has nicely colored and shaped blooms that last a good while, but only fair repeat and not much fragrance.

You guys are too kind and it touches me in a way I can't express considering the state into which I let this yard fall. I'm still trying to wrangle many areas, but worked really hard on this upper level as it's most visible to me and where I used to spend the most time, especially at night which is the reason for many light coloured roses and plants. It also needed to show from afar since I'm the only one that seems to visit all the roses! :-) When I redid everything after having to dig up the entire yard (literally) to fix the "green" portion of the roof, only the 100 yr old New Dawn, spring bulbs, yucca and a few miscellaneous plants were spared. I used to have complicated perennial beds here which required an enormous amount of time which with a time intensive job was just a pipe-dream. They became a disaster, so when I had the opportunity to replant I chose to focus on my first love, roses, and flowering low care shrubs, mainly hydrangea and spirea that I got for $5 each one year at Menard's I went ahead and planted them even before clearing anything out just to give them a start. Then I had to teach the deer this wasn't their home anymore! Still working on that. : (( My few underplantings are Stachys Lanata, a lavender and May wine gallium. That's it. I started with carnations and Sweet William, but they died. I also have one Monarda that's hanging in there, but I moved the geranium to another place. Thank you so much. Deborah, thanks for reminding me of Code Girls, which I've wanted to read for quite a while. Prices have probably dropped now. I'm sure this book follows the long line of those books featuring women who did the science, while men got the credit. My uncle was a code breaker in WWll. We still don't know exactly what he did. Strangely, I like English novels of manners and comedies of manners, which "Remains" is, but it's not really clicking with me. Not long ago, I finished he sixth novel in the Mapp and Lucia series (comedies of manners), written in the 1920s-30s by E.F. Benson. They start slow and become hilarious and ridiculous. And though the author wrote lots of other books, probably more serious, these six novels are his best known. I'm an Anglophile, and they are British to the core. The author's father was the Archbishop of Canterbury, no less. I promise to post the cuke sandwich recipe in the autumn thread today. Curried chicken salad makes wonderful little sandwiches, too, and is another mainstay for tea parties. I saw Love's Promise photos a while back and thought it was a gorgeous rose. I need to look it up again. I hope your Hot Cocoa makes a full recovery. We have few gophers out here because of the blessed badgers. There are lots of voles, though, and Finn makes short work of many, Plus, he never eats them, which is a good thing, because they carry parasites. There's nothing like seeing a worm hanging out of a kitty's rear end--gack. Carol, I'm so glad for your warm temps--I swear your weather predictions are the same as ours. We're having smoke again and some wind. Not nice weather to be out in. My sympathies on the spruce tree. I have a story about Colorado Blue Spruce for another time. However, Noooo, on the "stupid avocado tree". My father in law had the most wonderful avocado tree in LA, along with citrus trees. How I miss them, and the perfect avocados he gave me. We all are big avocado fans, and can use many up fast. I wish you could experience the fun of tall candelabra on your roses. I really get a kick out of them, but yes, they are weird looking. Some roses never shoot them up--like Tamora, which is too busy blooming, which I like better. Diane

LEM - Kristine (on the seasonal thread...love for you to join us there) told me that you are looking for information on Austins in Canada. :) Here's what I told her. Phoenix Perennials has Austins...it's a pretty expensive place...shipping is horrendous. Wildwood Outdoor Living Centre has Austins too...they ship as well. I like how Wildwood ships their roses...lots of feeder roots in a bit of soil. Hope that helps. I'm still waiting to see when their preorders will be up.

Thank you Elaine and Kate. I worried that maybe the Dr. Huey rootstock wouldn't be good in my area - slightly acidic soil and others have mentioned that own root take a long time to grow and are not as vigorous.

And my Austin's ( from Austin in Texas) do beautifully in Chicago.

All of my David Austins are on Dr Huey and despite being Texas "natives", they thrive here. My soil is slightly acidic. In general, I have not noticed a difference between multiflora and Dr Huey rootstock. Both are fine for me. Bare roots are slow to establish (in my garden).

Pickering has a reasonable selection but many are sold out. I didn't see any sold by Palatine.

Hi Sue,

Pickering is the best source remaining here in Canada for Austin's reliably grafted on multiflora. Unfortunately, they have been scaling back their selection for many years now and have not carried any newer DA varities from about 2009 to present.

Personally, I would generally give Hortico a miss as they are terribly unreliable and also procure a large portion of their varieties from other growers (mainly in the U.S.), so it is not uncommon to see them ship plants on Dr. Huey understock, despite what they may claim to the contrary. Huey does not thrive in the majority of Ontario soils and in general, the Huey understock is not well suited to our climate. They will usually begin to noticeably decline after 2-3 years. Around the same time that most roses are just coming into their own.

You can order some DA varieties on own-root direct from DA of course, provided you are willing to pay the borderline criminal prices they charge for bare-root roses and shipping.

Vigorous varieties of own-root roses actually do pretty well here in Ontario, but do take a little longer to establish.
