The most beautiful and fragrant pink H.P.s , and Portlands.

I have Nastarana" in pride of place in the front row, and though it fills the area with a light perfume, I would like a showier rose there of a mid-to deep pink, in that garden plot which is dedicated to O.G.Rs from the 1800's.

I've grown these four, and would like to try a different rose now:

Mrs. John Laing" my favorite of the 4 named here.

Baronne Prevost

Grandmothers Hat" perfect in all ways, but I'd like a deeper pink to contrast with the light pink Tea roses in

that area.

Mme. Boll"

Two roses stand out for me,

"Portland from Glendora", grown to c. 7 feet tall on rootstock and looks like it could be pegged to magnificent effect, or Yolande d'Aragon" which I can't remember ever seeing, but the photos wow me.

if you grow both of these could you tell me which is more beautiful, and healthier? and more fragrant? If our climate is similar any information on foliage disease resistance will be valuable.

Lux -- You might consider "Old Town Novato." It may be the same rose that Vintage sometimes sells as "Hudson Crimson," or "Jay's Hudson Crimson."

Good chance you can find one at the Cemetery open garden, or at the Celebration Of Old Roses.

Yolande has fab flowers, some of the most beautiful ever in their color class, but the growth habit is a bit...odd. It throws out loong canes, with a flower at the end of each. I think it is best used at back of border, unless you want to peg. The canes are quite flexible. Foliage is a light green, almost chartruese, color, which I have not seen on any other roses. Not at all the dark green we are used to seeing on roses. Another oddity, which I have seen on no other rose is that if you prune, new sprouts grow directly out of the old canes. If you want pink, you might look at tea roses, which offer, as one poster on this forum once wrote "the complete garden package". Sorry, I can't remember whom. Among Portlands, Marchese de Bochella/Jacques Cartier did very well for me in the central valley. You might find it being sold as Koningen v Denmark. Portlands do need water, are not drought resistant, though mulching will help. Which direction does your yard face? I found, in CA, that I could grow Portlands and albas if I had a northern exposure, but for south facing gardens, I had to stick to teas, noisettes, and other tender roses.

I agree 100% with butterfly. I had a 10" cutting bloom in my basement this winter.Only one flower filled the whole basement with perfume,and it really is a great fragrence.You won't be dissapointed with it even tho it's not a dble or tripple. Dan in Pa.

Looking forward to more pics. You know, I think it might be crimson glory (which, i think is what Seil meant to suggest. ). It's a parent of oklahoma and is considred fairly cold tolerant, for an HT. It gets mildewy- which yours is in the pic (pretty common problem with many roses and not a big deal, btw). High centered bloom is the shape of the flower. It's the shape most people think of for a rose. The center of your rose in the pic is rather cupped. Bummer you lost 2 oklahoma. Most hybrid tea roses are classed for zone 7. This is the zone which all the stems should survive the winter without freeze damage. They generally will still survive in zone 6b. Even 5b. Every climate is different tho- and perhaps Oklahoma is finicky about where you are? Lola

Barbara's pasture, Irene ford, Elisabeths china, Grandmothers hat, madam anissette, Mary rose, golden celebration, angel face, and Julia child. Scentimental and duchesse de brabant have a decent fragrance also. I also have setzer noisette and have been told it has a strong musk/ floral scent but I'm not sure I can smell noisettes that well since It smells lightly to me . I also have copperopolis bar which was described as VERY fragrant, but it's a slow establishing rose that puts most of its energy into trying to bloom , so I haven't had many blooms to smell.

Portland from Glendora (which may or may not be Joasine Hanet) has very deep pink flowers which are intensely fragrant. For me it had no disease but grew quite tall and it is spiny. I don't think it was totally happy in my dry heat and I could have taken better care of it in terms of water, mulch and fertilizer. I don't have it now and much prefer the teas, but it may be a good rose for you.

luxrosa, I am growing Yolande d'Aragon in San Diego inland and it has been a great rose for me. The flowers are really big, have the mid pink color that you want (it is definitively a deeper pink than Grandmother's Hat, which I grow too) and are very fragrant. I would say the blooms of YdA are showstoppers! It repeats also well for an Hybrid Perpetual. It is a very vigorous, easy growing, and disease free rose in my garden and the growth habit and leave color is exactly as nastarana states, therefore I would also agree that is a rose for the back of the border. I love, love, love this rose!

Portland from Glendora I have only seen growing in a friends garden, who is living close by but I have to say I was not impressed. I am pretty sure his plant is own-root, so when it is on rootstock as you intend to grow it might be a different story! The rose was a couple of years old, had a little bit of a spindly growth habit and topped out at approximately 5 x 5 feet. I found the individual flowers not very attractive because they are nondescript informal, small, and an almost boring deep rose pink. One thing that speaks for PfG though is the strong fragrance. With this rose it is rather about the whole bush, than about the individual flowers. Definitively more a cottage garden rose in my opinion.

If I would have to make a decision between the two roses I clearly would go with Yolande d' Aragon!

Jeri: The crimson rose sounds lovely. I suppose I should save some rose $ and gardening space for roses from the Sacramento Cemetary rose sale, in case I can get a ride there, the last 5 years I've not gone for that reason. which is moderately heart breaking, such a lovely garden and nice folks and convsersation.

Nastarana: thanks for your input, I do love the blooms of "Portland from Glendora" and its' intense damask type scent, its just the spindlyness (new word?) of the darn thing, growth habit is so important to me. I remember now seeing it at the Berkeley Botanical Garden, because 2 plants were own-root and one was on rootstock and 6-7 feet tall and spindlyissima (my attempt at Porcine Latin for most spindly of all).

Check out a Portland foundling called "Pickering Four Seasons". Rogue Valley has bands in stock. Vintage has it Custom Root. I got a tiny band of it late last year, so I only saw a flower or two. Deep pink, and they smell so good.

I'm HOPING for good things from it this spring, but I don't live in the best climate for Portlands, so ...
