Bluestone Spring catalog arrived today (sigh)
Comments (12)In going through all my Bluestone coupons, I know I'll order more than I probably would have if those coupons didn't exist. I still haven't gone through the whole catalog, but I'm sneaking a look now and then. First there's the 15% off if ordered by mid Feb. Free shipping coupon 1 plant - any price - free $2 off any full sun plant $2 off any plant in coconut fiber pot $1.50 any white flowering perennial $2 off any one plant - anything $1.50 off any phlox Free plant with $100 order - my choice Free surprise plant with $85 order and the list goes on and on. I still have a whole stack of other coupon offers. For me, these make a difference as long as I'm getting plants I really want. Kevin...See MoreMy Pallatine Order Came Today!
Comments (27)What comes next is all based on my experience and the advice of a well-trusted rose friend (ARS CR and all-around great guy). I originally had my shipment scheduled for delivery in early March, thinking that our zone 7 winter would be too much for new bare roots. While we were talking about something else one day, my friend mentioned Pallatine Roses. I told him that I had a shipment from them for March delivery. He asked why I didn't have them delivered in November. "November?", I asked, naively. He told me to pot them and keep them in my garage, knowing that I have been keeping potted roses for 3 years now. The cold garage will keep them dormant, but will protect them from the drying winds. I trusted his advice, and I changed my shipment date. Marina, to keep potted roses over the winter, you don't have to shuffle them in and out of the garage. Keep them in the garage and check on them every once in a while. Just make sure they don't go completely dry, but don't water them too much either. The idea is to keep them dormant. They won't need lots of sunlight because they're not growing. A bit of in and out will be necessary in the spring to harden them to outside conditions, but it's not as much as it would be if they were being held in a warmer space (like a greenhouse). As to planting them and mounding them, I don't think it's cold enough here for that yet. Don't you winter-protect roses like that after things have frozen? We've had frost a couple of nights here in Stafford, but no hard freeze yet. I went to HD this morning to get the ingredients to make up a few batches of potting mix (scotts garden soil, perlite, and spaghnum moss). I'll go down to the garage in a little while and put the not-so-little guys into their pots. Connie P.S. These aren't the only roses I'll be keeping in the garage. I have some bands from Rogue Valley coming soon. They'll be re-potted, and kept in the garage under lights along with some of my well-rooted cuttings. Winter is for rose gardening in the garage. :)...See MoreChristmas gift just arrived
Comments (7)It's a cold wintry day, so I thought a touch of spring and an update on the hydroponic tomatoes might be in order. I planted these on January 8th. Here they are on January 27th. There were 3 or 4 seedlings per spot at this point. And here they are today, February 2nd. This shot is after they have been thinned, to a single seedling per spot. Here is the largest plant (on February 2nd) photographed beside a 1 cup measuring cup to show the actual size. I'm really pleased with the way they look so far. Kinda make your mouth water for spring, summer, and red, juicy, ripe tomatoes, doesn't it?...See MoreDaily Support January 25 to January 31
Comments (55)Good Friday all, From frigid frozen and bitterly cold NH!! Wow, so much for our little January thaw. She's going out like a lion with a vengeance for sure. Yesterday we had just enough snow to cover the ice making things really slick and dangerous. Many accidents and one death locally after the truck when careening into a river during a white out. So sad. Temps plummeted 30 degrees overnight....and the wind is howling. It's so windy and cold today that I closed the doors on one side of the barn to give the animals a break. Not nice. I saw on the news that we are not alone with these conditions - out in the mid-west is crazy too. Ah Winter. As cold as it was before dawn this morning (3 degrees) I must say I was taken by the beauty of the full Wolf moon setting over the pasture. It has illuminated our nights for so long. Jan and Dee, the winter months bring out the interior decorator in me to so I am thinking of repainting the downstairs bathroom and making some other significant changes there. Cabin fever brings this on I am sure. DH is home this weekend so that will be fun. I will probably not be riding the horses!! LOl no way, too icy and cold. Last Saturday was dream to be out and now.... Marci, Milkdud, thanks for the ideas. I will have to just dig in and start organizing the letters and figure it out. It's fun but I always have a slow start until I get truly inspired. Has anyone read Food, Inc.? It's a must read for those who truly care about where there food comes from and how it gets onto the table. Fascinating and disturbing too....See Morepaddlehikeva
