Jude the Obscure has a wonderful fragrance - like tangerines, but has poor (no) repeat. It is about 7 yrs old and own root, 4x4 feet.

To be fair, I'm starting to wonder if the plant has midge even though no other roses in my garden show signs. This spring I'm going to prune it back hard and treat the soil with the Bayer midge soil drench and see what happens. I'll report back with my results.

I love my Jude the Obscure. It has this perfect colour that blends in nicely with light pink roses. Really nice - even my mother and older brother likes this rose better than all my other roses.

Mine started blooming in late November. Spring here starts in September. But JtO is worth the wait beacause the first flush I had was very impressive which lasted throughout December.

I could see a few buds (4) appearing now - not as prolific as the first flush(20) though.

Worth growing.

My 2 Judes repeat well. There is a freeze-burned bud that he put out last week during a warm smell. When the bloom is not damaged by thrips (later flushes), the color and fragrance of Jude takes my breath away. Buff

Someone on this forum - can't remember the name - suggest that if you're having trouble retrieving "old post", what you need to do is go to www.google.com and type in the name of the post you're after, including the poster name's and "gardenweb" in the search bar and that will sure bring back the old post.

If only I knew this early I wouldn't have deleted all my bookmarks.

Love, love, love JtO. Mine is 5 or 6 years. It has always repeated, but never often, this past year it just put on a display. We've always thought the fragrance was grapefruit, but citrus to be sure.

I don't have Jude, but I do have Lady Emma and Tea Clipper on order. I'll have to wait to see how well they do.

I have Jude and here in CA it blooms regularly. I really like it although I think it suffered this year from not enough water. I hope we have a bit more rain. I am thinking of buying Tea Clipper this weekend at the local garden center.

I had of them in the past. The spring flush of TG was beautiful. But later in the summer , the bright yellow flowers looked very "flat" instead of cupped and they bleached away to an "unpleasant" look similar to this:

In terms of flower look, I would prefer Graham Thomas over teasing Georgia.

Thank you Jumbo Jimmy for the lovely pics. I too have Graham Thomas & love it. My teasing georgia is just lovely too...interesting...Peachiekean is your colorng (jto) similar to Jumbo Jimmy's? I am trying to stear clear of pink in that area but it is so gorgeous!

I am very curious to know how Tea Clipper would contrast with Grace. Both are apricot...but Grace is one of the Austin "Leander" line and Tea Clipper is in the English Musk line, like Graham Thomas.

So Tea Clipper is now available on this side of the pond? Last I heard (last year) straight from Austins's in the UK was that one was being delayed for an unforseen reason. Seems they resolved whatever it was? Really looking forward to getting my mitts on that one. I like the name too because I just LOVE those old tall ships!!
I mean really, am I the only one who finds the name of a rose can add to or take away from its appeal?

I am very interested also about the combination of Grace & Tea Clipper and I am going to find out very soon as tea clipper was purchased for me by a friend. I think they might be nice separated by the Prince (just wish he did better for me!) Triple B Tea Clipper it is available both off the Austin website and from Regan Roses here in California. I don't know about anywhere else. Cindy

Boy talk about clever marketing. Make it a LITTLE hard to get ahold of, and EVERYBODY wants it. Mind you it does look enticing does it not?

Seems I can't get it in Canada just yet. The UK and US Austin will not ship to Canada. Guess I will wait for Horito. By then we will have the lowdown on the rose, as teseted over time.

My Jude repeats quite well. Perhaps it likes cooler weather? It doesn't like wet weather though - it will ball. This is one of my favorite of all my roses. And the fragrance is amazing!

something about those cupped roses...the shape just says "come hither and bury your nose in me." You just KNOW they are going to smell delicious.

Interestingly, I've never seen my JtO balled before. Perhaps we don't get much rain here in Australia or maybe our rain is much lighter.

cjhatt1215- Jude isn't a pink rose. It's hard to describe the colour because it's always changing but it's a very beautifulrose when you look at it. It repeats well for me than compare to my A Shropshire Lad. This morning the flower of JtO looks yellowish:

Just curious-
Does Jude shatter as quickly as many of the other Austins?
Could I expect it to last more than a day or two in a bouquet?

The fragrance for Jude is just delicious - to me the fragrance is of the fruit lychee, and it sort of has a slight tangy or spicy kick to it - you just can't get enough of it.

Unfortunately though I find the blooms do terribly as a cut flower, rarely lasting more than 2 or 3 days even if cut early. If you cut them too early, they may remain balled up and not fully open. But the after a day or two the petals drop at the slightest nudge.

The color I find starts of a translucent lemony yellow that ages well to a more opaque and paler peach color. Reminds me very much of the aging of Carding Mill or Brother Cadfael blooms.

The flowers can be quite heavy though and I find that my plant can have trouble supporting the blooms. Jude hates shade, but can't handle too much direct sun. Seems to repeat poorly (but that may due to my somewhat shadier position).

Just ordered Lady Emma this season, I can't wait!

Triple b - I am just now buying my first OGRs, but I fell in love with old roses years ago, and I think at least half of the attraction was due to the names! Those beauiful old names - Honorine de Brabant, Reine des Violettes, Great Maiden's Blush, Marechal Neil, Apothecary's Rose, etc., etc. - guess I'm just an old Romantic.

Yes, a little more pleasing names than "KNOCKOUT" aren't they? For some reason that name of a rose series just reeks of cheese.
