Roses like Jude the Obscure in form/shape?

Trying not to overtake other threads with new comments/directions, so starting a separate thread.

I love the form and smell of Jude the Obscure. Probably the closest to my favorite type of rose shape/form and size of bloom.

What I'd like to know is if anyone has any other rose recommendations that are close to it? I'm open to color and fragrance (or no fragrance) but only if it is as globular, large and full as JTO. Not looking for smaller sized blooms here or shallow cupped. Looking for just like JTO but different roses.

Glamis Castle, a bit more ruffled

The exact same shape is hard to fine, but there are several globualar roses. Some of them go more flat when fully open. Mme Claroline Testout are quite globular, but the outer edges of the petals are tured outwards as the flower opens.

Perhaps Golden Celebration? I saw GC once at the rose garden, and thought it was JtO. The color looks almost similar but the blooms of GC stands out a lot more than Jude the Obscure. I still love JtO, I just wish it has a lax growth habit similar to GC instead.

I live in zone 6a in the Northwest. Here's my take on these 2 roses (just my humble opinion). 1) The strength of Judes fragrance is a tad stronger than LEH, but I prefer LEH actual smell. LEH is lemony rose. She is my husband's favorite rose- for color and scent. She is strongly scented too. It's a tough call. 2) Jude starts out pretty pale, so he does become off-white. LEH always retains the reddish scarlet tinge on her petal edges even if she fades. She has such a broad range of colors to start with. Tangerine and pink and pale yellow. But then Jude has those charming BIG bowls of fluff. Like a peony kind of. Lady tends toward more medium flowers here. 3) LEH is a tidy compact bush for me. Probably my shortest bush in my garden (well normal shaped-- Wm shakespeare is shorter but that's cuz he is a young and confused grower!) LEH's stems are often wine colored- which is really attractive. My jude is pretty young, so I can't comment on his habits but he seems pretty standard- I think he will be bigger than LEH though. 4) I have zero problems with either rose as to foliage. No leaf loss at all. I don't spray chemicals. I had some powdery mildew on every rose, which is easily taken care of with milk and baking soda. 5) LEH repeats great. She always puts on full flushes. I would say she is one of my better repeaters. Jude is too young to comment, but he repeated better than I expected with those big blowsy blooms as a 2 year old. (whereas, Golden Celebration is KILLING ME with his slow reload). 6) We've had really mild winters the last 5 years so I can't say much beyond LEH is fine so far with a bunch of pine needles dumped on her. Jude is in a big pot, so maybe I'll have bad news in spring- but I really doubt it. I have lots of Austins and none have suffered. Lady Emma woke up about middle of the pack. Ione last thought- I had a horrible problem with thrips last year (Lord, please let the snow kill them!) and they liked Jude more than LEH.

Jude the Obscure, grafted or own root?

Hi Diane: I'm very impressed with your Jude ... so healthy and tons of blooms in your alkaline clay. I have alkaline clay too, and roses grafted on Dr. Huey are awesome bloomers at the rose park, 15 minutes from me. My neighbor put a row of hybrid teas grafted on Dr. Huey, our soil is limestone clay, pH 7.7. He was cutting them for the vase everyday, dark green leaves, 100% clean, non-stop blooming. But only for 1st year, our zone 5a winter killed them. Hi Andreajp: Per your question of "Do grafted rose have an expiration date?" It depends on your soil/climate. In my zone 5a wet clay, grafted isn't best due to: 1) My neighbor planted his grafted hybrid teas at ground level, our -20 F winter zapped the bud union. 2) I buried a grafted hybrid tea at 4" below ground level. Dr. Huey doesn't like my wet clay, and declined. My hybrid tea went from 100% clean in the pot, to BS like crazy in that wet clay (mulched with leaves). Knock-outs in that wet bed lost their Dr. Huey's roots completely (these were planted 6" below ground). Knock-outs planted at ground level elsewhere retained their Dr. Huey. 3) The lifespan of Dr. Huey in my cold zone 5a is very short, the rose park replaces their HT's beds constantly.. the only ones that stay long are hardy Austin roses. Niels in Denmark, zone 5b, made the same observation that grafted doesn't last long, except for Peace hybrid tea. I checked in HMF and found Peace have thousands of descendants. Lots of descendants mean it can be grown easily from seeds, and root easily. Jude the Obscure has only 1 descendant, hard to root. Kim Rupert (Roseseek) in a dry and hot climate report that grafted on Dr. Huey lasts very long, like 80 years. In our cold and wet limestone clay, Dr. Huey lasts 2 years max if buried too deep. Everything decomposes fast in my limestone clay, lime is used in the old days to corrode corpses. Kim has shale clay, where imprints of ancient fossils are preserved ... he reported that nothing decomposes buried in his dry clay.

Jude is worth buying for the fragrance alone! Strong even in freezing late autumn rains and great as a cut flower. Here in England it buds out later than other roses and so only seems capable of 2 flushes (a third one usually fails as we reach late October/November). But when it does bloom it goes absolutely crazy with just how many flowers it pushes out. As for balling, I can't say i've noticed it much, and let me tell you it's rainy in England. Olivia Rose Austin is a much more guilty culprit, to the point where I might just shovel prune the whole thing next year if it doesn't step up it's game this summer.

Hi Stasi,

I have grown over 120 different Austin roses over the years. In my opinion, the one that has a similar shape is St. Cecilia. It is also has been the most fragrant of all the Austin roses and has the "myrrh" fragrance that some love and some hate. As is the case with many very fragrant roses, it struggles a bit with disease resistance, especially powdery mildew. But it is definitely worth growing. I just planted one at my new house that I got from Pickering and it is thriving. I should see my first blooms in around a week.

Stasi, Brother Cadfael has those globular, cabbage rose, type blooms. I think it is a sensuous rose. The blooms can be huge and never really open out fully. It is very fragrant and a nice even pink color. For me in CA, it blooms mostly all spring long and takes a summer break. In autumn, it makes a moderate come back. It does get tall, but blooms up and down the shrub. It can be pruned down after it's first flush.

I grow Charles Darwin next to Jude the Obscure and often notice how much the blooms are alike in size and form. Darwin is lighter (more of a cream in my garden), but has that same wonderful size and form of Jude. In the picture below, the cream colored roses to the left and below Jude are Charles Darwins. They had bloomed before Jude and were on the tail end of their bloom, so it's not a very good picture of them - sorry.

Lady Emma Hamilton is very close in flower shape having a few less petals and is a stronger shade of orange rather than the pastel yellow tint of Jude the Obscure. Rather than a grapefruit scent it is a little more like an orange in scent.

Thanks all. I bet it is harder to find the larger size bloom versus the globular shape...it's pretty big.
