Mentha, You just have to get creative. My husband (bless his pea-pickin'-heart) is a slug at home. We've lived in the same house for 21 years and to get ANYthing done takes forEVER because he feels HE has to do it (he IS in the construction industry, after all), but will he get out of the recliner and work on a project? Heck, no! So, for example, we talked and talked and talked about remodling the basement (for YEARS, mind you!!) Saved our money, HAD the money, but he never had the gumption to get it started. I finally started bringing contractors in to give me bids, which scared him into getting started. It still took a few months to get it done, but it got him off his butt!! As for my GH - and a lot of you have heard this one - I just waited until he wanted a "big ticket" item and negotiated that I would go along with HIS Harley if I could have a GH of equal value. Result: he was a little smarter about how much he spent on his Harley (because it did, in essence cost him twice as much!) and I got my GH. You just gotta know how to manipulate them - just do it with a big kiss-kiss and love-darts in your eyes! Here's another... I got a little inheritence when my Dad passed away - it's been sitting in savings for nearly 3 years now, earmarked for a complete remodel of the bathroom in our 88 year old house. My plan: as soon as I have a couple days off, take a sledge hammer to the walls while love-muffin is at work, then proudly show him how "helpful" I was to get started on our project when he comes home from work. He'll do a bad job of hiding his irritation (after all, he CAN'T be mad 'cuz I was being helpful!!), but then he'll kick into gear and get going on it, OR he'll concede to let me hire a contractor to get it started. The S&P shakers I won on ebay bid & really reasonable...I got 8 sets & right now I have 5 place setting of Winter Frost...did get stung on some bowls that listed as slight wear from GW online...got a set of 8 but they were very scratched up inside bowl & some even crackled wear! So may use for a mosaic project. punk, yachter & frou...SNow! Ugh...who wants to really look at "winter" decor anyway!!! YES, so ready for Spring like most everyone! How do I keep my houseplants from drying out while I'm away?

You have a couple of options - reduce the light (so the plants use less water,) or provide them with enough water to last 1 - 3 weeks. Herbs and flowering plants need a lot of light, so setting them in the bathtub may not work for them, although it should be fine for the ferns. You can set your plants up with self-watering systems, which may mean less work for you even when you're home, since you won't have to be watering every few days. Or if you like the way you're doing it generally, try this: When you get ready to go away, move the plants away from the windows 2 or 3', and set each of the pots in a dish. Water your plants, and allow a runoff of 2 or 3" to build up in the drainage dish. You'll just leave the water there, it will provide the moisture for the soil. When you come back, remove the plants from the water (if there's any left,) and allow the soil to dry out enough so that it is barely damp, or however it usually is when you water normally. The plants will not be harmed by sitting in wet soil for a couple of weeks. This is basically what happens with self-watering systems, unless you have one of the sophisticated ones that have moisture sensing devices that release water only when the soil is dry. Roots don't "sip" water when they need it - they're little gluttons, and will suck up whatever is there, for as long as it's there.

Randy you will remember when a woman in Georgia kept raving about RR and that is when I went out and bought this creepy rose who occaisionally forgets to burn and gum up her petals, fry her leaves and generally sport the malaise. Then she fronts a few of these scent drenched babes and all is forgiven.
All I can say Jackie is that she is lucky she is still standing. Occaisionally I park the green dumpster up close and personal...Thank you, you didn't know how she treats me...

Oh look at them reds, you know how I love reds and Devoniensis, I've never seen a prettier rose. All your roses are so beautiful Luanne!

Hamp the weeds did take over and that is why I so rarely leave home Sherry! Despite the pleasure of seeing the blooms, the weeding runs away with me. I can hear them now daring me to come out in that sneering way that weeds have, amidst the strangulated cries of the younger roses. The older ones have grown callous and devil may care after years of the coming and going of weeds--the same weeds. Does the phrase "Oh it's you again!" strike a familiar note?
Does anyone else remember Sammie Davis saying "Do the name Ruby Begonia, strike a familiar note?" You have to be very old...

Got to love that Rouge Royale and Bishop Darlington is one of my all time favorites nice fragrance and such s imple beautiful bloom somtimes they remind me of small orchids

Well Joe not only do we share similar clematis tastes but yes, matf(my all time favorites)pretty much describes the Bishop for me. Will post more shots of him today.
Anyone that likes Blanc is bound to be a friend of mine. I get so annoyed with people who won't grow her because of the dirty hanky syndrome. She is truely one of the best smelling roses around--plant under your bedroom window and crank it open on a summer night--love is in the air!

Luanne I planted Rouge Royale last spring. He/she/it, has rewarded me with several gorgeous red blooms. I have had neighbors stop and ask who that pretty red rose was/is. I love it and so far it seems strong. Thanks for the inspiring pics, that will keep me determined to make this rose a star in my garden.

Blanc is an old familiar friend too. I loved this rose in my old garden. Haven't gotten it for this one yet but it is on the list of reliable roses to purchase.

Valerie, a list of reliable roses to purchase--can there be such a thing? If so Blanc wuold be there but Rouge would not although he may like it better farther north. I seem to specialize in roses that are nor reliable until we reach some kind of aggreement and it is different for each rose.!
