Winter Dishes Tablescape (before I put them away!)

Ok, this is my 2nd tablescape ... "Billy" was the 1st. So I am trying (yet) to do Spring...but must put my winter stuff away...well, of course, can't put winter dishes away until I try a t'scape...so spent the morning on this:

My dishes are Pfaltzgraff Winter Frost (2001 - discont. 2006)...so I add when I can find good prices:

Here's the centerpc of pottery snowmen I've collected at various times & the beautiful big Winter Frost bowl which I use for a punch bowl at Christmas:

View of placesetting from side of table...added white snowflake plate on top of dinner plate ...two settings for DH & me...he just shakes his head as I've mentioned before we are "recliner diner(s)!"

I found 2 place setting of flatware at Bed,Bath & Beyond on clearance for $2.99 ea...I bought them with winter dishes in mind...but now I'm searching for more! Hampton Oslo Hammered ...Target sells them but these are probably discont. or something! They are slim & nice & weighty:

I added these ceramic tealight holders & used battery tealights...aren't these snowmen just the cutest! I've collected them from diff places each yr.:

The centerpc snowmen & bowl & goblets I had on top of my fridge in a display & the dishes & water glass (not pictured) I keep out all winter on plate racks & such on one of my counters)...so, since it's 50 degrees today (YIPPEE!), time to put away! The 2 placemats I sewed from some lovely pinetree fabric I found Christmas shopping with friends.

Would appreciate any feedback on making improvements...as I am VERY new to this & learning so much from you all on here! Thanks for lookin'! Jeanne S.

Jeanne, that is SO pretty! I love the blues (even Doll Baby's dress looks coordinated with the setting!
You seem to be a natural at this table-setting business (and I'm a bright shade of green). I hope when you head out to your gardens and GJ stuff soon, you can still find time to be here and do tables during the summer. I LOVE seeing what you come up with.

It's just great. I mean, JUST GREAT. You really have a talent for this. I love your squatty snowmen. Love the taller one too.

You did a wonderful job combining all the different textures - twig runner, cloth placemats, pottery, glass, hammered flatware. It's just super.

I can't offer a percentage, but I had a number of prolifs last year and quite a few have grown into full size fans so far this year. I did as others have said - - leave them on the plant as long as I could, then cut the scape an inch or so above and below, powdered on some rooting hormone, and put them in a good potting mix. Lost a few, but probably less than a third. Some say if no roots have formed, that is when they should first be put in water. Then when ther roots form, do as above. One thing I will add, when you plant them, place them where they get more shade than sun and keep them moist until the forming develop enough to sustain the plant. Larry

One of the reasons to *not* rinse/prewash dishes is if you use an enzyme detergent it needs the food particles to work better. It'll etch glass and stuff if it doesn't have the food particles. I can't explain it well, but it's easy research for a more thorough explanation. Most just recommend scraping the dishes (and really, who wouldn't?!) then into the DW. I haven't had a dishwasher for more than 30 years but I'm starting to miss it. I would get grossed out though when it left stuff on it. When washing by hand and using a good soap it gets clean. Sure, you just put it back in and rewash but it still bugs me. It also bugs me to see people leave dirty dishes in the DW for a week before washing them. Argh! If it takes a week to fill it, you should have a smaller DW or use a top rack only feature. This is what impresses me about the F&P Dish Drawers. And geez, I can wash a few dishes FAR faster than an hour or two for a dishwasher! LOL And when you compare the time to load the dishwasher vs washing, it's pretty close. Time's not a factor. It's the hassle of washing them. I soak my dishes and a quick swish, rinse in HOT water and into the drainer to dry. Putting them away is comparable to time in a DW. Oh, and one thing I found out quickly, the way you load it makes a big difference. You have to learn how the water sprays and make sure it's not blocked for effective washing.

brutuses - they are called pants stretchers. Still made today. Very useful if you have someone who wants creases in heavy pants or jeans; also just to hang pants up to dry, especially during snow or rain storms. usafarmer - you have my understanding and sympathy. I found the amount of laundry almost unreal when I took care of my aged mother - even after she had to go into the nursing home, *I* still had all her laundry except for the sheets! (for you others - it's about the quantity of laundry as for triplets, only in adult size). She and I both loved the fresh scent of clothes hung outdoors, but let's get real here: There is only one of you and only 60 minutes in each hour. I timed it before facing facts - it took something like 10 minutes to remove a load of sheets and line-hang them compared to 45 seconds to move them from the washer to the dryer. Folding takes the same time regardless of where you stand; but you never get chapped hands from the dryer. Multiple that by 5 loads a day, and you've spent close to an hour doing nothing but hanging stuff up!!! Several baskets for dirty things are a life-saver. Label each basket and train co-residents to use them. I prefer 4 baskets: whites and bleachables; dark stuff including jeans; colored stuff; terry stuff. When a basket is nearly full, it gets dumped right into the washer, from there right into the dryer. Putting away is divided into 2 groups: hang or fold. Stuff to be hung gets hung immediately from the dryer (which also prevents wrinkling) and foldable stuff gets folded right out of the dryer and stacked into sorted piles. Put the hangared things immediately into the proper closet- it takes the same number of minutes whether you lay them across a chair or put them into the closet, so don't go making unnecessary guilt for yourself. The piles of folded stuff are put into the basket, grouped according to owner (his socks, t-shirts, shorts on the bottom; then my undies; etc.) Kids old enough to be potty-trained were taught to put their folded stuff into the proper drawer (label with a picture until they learn to read). I put away everyone else's, again: because it's quicker!!! Maybe you spend a few seconds more on opening the drawer, but look at all the time saved when you aren't stumbling over piles on the floor, lol. There is one more *very* important reason for putting things where they belong: YOU deserve to live in a neat home. You will also find that you feel better and have more energy when you don't have to climb over [or even see] piles of stuff sitting around. BTW, a young neighbor of mine cut down cardboard boxes to fit the kids' drawers. She did indeed fold almost everything wearable right into the appropriate box - I think winter coats were the only things found on hangars. Frankly, I never figured out whether she didn't wash until the box was empty, or spent time unloading and re-loading each box. And, re kids laundry: as soon as they celebrate a double-digit birthday (10), then they are old enough to take complete responsibility for their own clothing, including washing, drying, and putting away. Sorry, I don't go along with letting junior's room get stacked up; it may be his room but it's in your house. Any out-of-place item found on *any* floor, sofa, or chair, goes into the chore bag [an old pillow case a good bag] - and the item can be redeemed in trade for any chore out of the job-jar; while any item left in the bag for more than a month is either given to Salvation Army or put into the trash on collection day. If they don't want it enough to earn it back, then it doesn't need to become clutter in your house. The job-jar starts along with toddling and should be age appropriate, from helping mommy dust chair rungs to a teenager washing X number of windows. The job-jar's point is not to punish, but to enable an earned value on time and effort which can then be traded for a mis-placed belonging out of the bag.

Sorry, I'm here! I discovered there are actually two different sets which is great to mix it up a little for a wall display. One only has four dinner plates while the other has six. A few chips but nothing major and most of them look great. Check. it. out. :) Some of them say Enlish Abbey on the bottoms others say Taylor Smith Taylor and are numbered. So these aren't antique and I'm ok with that but wondering how do you know if something is? Are these just not that old? Here's some photos. I really did believe they'd still be there. Most everyone around here decorates primitive country style with tins and stars, etc. Not to mention, I was there close to closing time and it was empty. It was beautiful here Saturday and there were lots and lots of yard sales so I'd say people were pooped out from that or just home grilling. :) If I wouldn't of found a cheese dome yard saling that day (going to make into a cloche) I wouldn't of went to begin with. I forced myself to go get a candle holder I knew was there for my little project. Guess it was meant to be.

Such a pretty way to end the "dreary" season and march on into springtime.
I love it all! Love the snowmen, the little flakes napkin rings, the flatware and most of all the mini s/p sets at each setting.

Jeanne, your tablescape is just perfect! You have a really good artistic sense for doing these - which I already knew from seeing your vignettes and garden! Love your blue dishes, the color is similar to a set I have. I also love those little plump snowmen - I used to sell those in my store but never bot any. Wish now I had. All the elements go together so well.

We are also often 'recliner-diners' and the last setting I did my DH asked if we were *really* going to eat at the table. I answered "not a chance as I'd have to wash and iron the tablecloth again". We both prefer our casual style and we're old enough to do what we want. ;-D

Hope to see lots more TS's from you! Everything you do is inspiring.

Your table turned out GREAT. We just got dumped on again so I was thinking about setting another snow table but think I have put most things I could use with it away.

Your Pfaltzgraff Winter Frost dishes are very pretty and look so nice with all your other decorations. Love the snowmen too.

Those dishes are great, they are so simple and could be used a lot of ways. I like them with the woodsy centerpiece and the snowmen. The placemats go really well too. I'm so ready for Spring, I going to pick a big ole bouquet of daffidils today.

The S&P shakers I won on ebay bid & really reasonable...I got 8 sets & right now I have 5 place setting of Winter Frost...did get stung on some bowls that listed as slight wear from GW online...got a set of 8 but they were very scratched up inside bowl & some even crackled wear! So may use for a mosaic project.

punk, yachter & frou...SNow! Ugh...who wants to really look at "winter" decor anyway!!! YES, so ready for Spring like most everyone! I do love the Winter Frost dishes...love pine trees & these fit so good. Thank U all! Jeanne S.

Jeanne, your Winter Frost dishes are so pretty, I love the pine design on them, and your placemats set them off so perfectly! I'm so loving your centerpiece with those pottery snowmen and the twig mat. I love snowmen, but don't think I've ever seen pottery ones--gonna have to keep my eyes open for them now. I'm just really enjoying all the "texture" in this arrangement, you really do have a natural talent for doing pretty arrangements--both inside and outside. Luvs

Jeanne, so glad you are now into tablescaping as you've got talent! I love what you've come up with here for a little Winter 'Scape. The dishes are so perfect for your theme and the "fat" snowmen, greenery and bowl put on an angle on the table makes a lovely centerpiece. The "winter" stemware is wonderful as is the flatware. Your pics turned out wonderfully too! Looking forward to your next tablescape!
P.S. LOVE your term "recliner diners"!!! LOL!

Thanks luvs, cindylou, & DD...enjoyed doing this & tomorrow the winter dishes are going in the top cupboards! Spring Fling for awhile!

Used my old tripod...need some practice again...been using "auto programming" on camera for some time! Nice to do some manual settings...but definitely need some practice! Most my photography is outside! So, thanks DD!

Never thought I'd like a tablescape in blue...just not my color. But I love yours because of the rustic nature of it. I like the placemats and napkin rings especially.

Love the "frosty look" on the stemware & the snowflake napkin rings. The winter trees on the darker blue placemats look great with the beautiful light blue of the solid dishes. Your snowmen are so classy! Beautiful setting for a winter meal!! Jan
