Well I finished my saturday project and got another metal shelving unit in my shadehouse and all the plants put back in before it rained again so now I have more room for my small Hoya.
The ones outside are just growing so much faster than the ones inside the house and a lot of them are starting buds.
It just seems they were really slow getting going this year, probally the strange weather we've had.

My husband is a carpenter, and poor me has to do anything myself when it comes to woodworking. I feel like the mechanic's wife, LOL! You don't know how many times I've asked him to build me a shade house and end up doing it myself only to have it fall down a few months later! This time I'm going to make it out of wood and not PVC.

I showed him this picture and asked him to make me something similar, he asked why?!!? I told him so he doesn't have to remove my Lucyish attempt in a couple of months. He still hasn't agreed, ugh. Says my ambitions are larger than my pocket book. Men!

Yah my husband said the same thing so I went and bought the materials. I got them in three trips so it wasn't all the expense at once.
We got the wood and dek boots first and built the frame and than the clear sheets for the top (it works best to attach the clear sheets before putting the frame up) and the lattice last.
It took us a while since my husband is diabetic and can't do long stretches of physical labor so we built it in stages.

It has worked out really great and with all the rain we've been having lately even more so.
It's so nice being able to put my plants outside and not have the wind and rain distroy them.

You just have to get creative. My husband (bless his pea-pickin'-heart) is a slug at home. We've lived in the same house for 21 years and to get ANYthing done takes forEVER because he feels HE has to do it (he IS in the construction industry, after all), but will he get out of the recliner and work on a project? Heck, no! So, for example, we talked and talked and talked about remodling the basement (for YEARS, mind you!!) Saved our money, HAD the money, but he never had the gumption to get it started. I finally started bringing contractors in to give me bids, which scared him into getting started. It still took a few months to get it done, but it got him off his butt!!

As for my GH - and a lot of you have heard this one - I just waited until he wanted a "big ticket" item and negotiated that I would go along with HIS Harley if I could have a GH of equal value. Result: he was a little smarter about how much he spent on his Harley (because it did, in essence cost him twice as much!) and I got my GH. You just gotta know how to manipulate them - just do it with a big kiss-kiss and love-darts in your eyes!

Here's another... I got a little inheritence when my Dad passed away - it's been sitting in savings for nearly 3 years now, earmarked for a complete remodel of the bathroom in our 88 year old house. My plan: as soon as I have a couple days off, take a sledge hammer to the walls while love-muffin is at work, then proudly show him how "helpful" I was to get started on our project when he comes home from work. He'll do a bad job of hiding his irritation (after all, he CAN'T be mad 'cuz I was being helpful!!), but then he'll kick into gear and get going on it, OR he'll concede to let me hire a contractor to get it started.

It's all about the "win-win"!!

Thanks for the encouragement. My husband is a bible scholar at heart, every spare moment he's got his bible in lap and various commentaries and dictionaries proped around himself. He needs to build a round bookshelf with a revolving chair inside! He's the only person who can teach about two verses and go on for 4 hours! Needless to say, I tend not to bother him when he's studying.

I was researching those concrete piers, and found they sell them at HD, so I'm going to go check pricing. I also looked up PVC lattice and found Lowes sells them for $12 less than HD, but Lowes is 70 miles away. It may be worth the drive to pick up 4 or more. At least I can find them. :) will keep you all posted.

Mentha, Glad to see you're getting started.

The cement Dek blocks are from $5.50 - $6.00 around here and also you can use the wood lattice which is less expensive but I think the other is stronger and with the winds we have around here I chose it and also you can get it in differant colors and not have to paint it. I got the cedar color.
The corrigated roofing sheets held up to a recant hail storm but I was worried for a while.

I also checked prices on line before I bought and sometimes if you're needing several of something it's cheaper to travel farther to get a better price.

I just made a wish list on the Lowe's site, printed it out and took it to Sutherlands and ask them to write down their prices for me.
