Do you get to spend time away from your plants? How?
Comments (34)i began switching my houseplants - mostly aglaonemas - into a hydroculture set up about 2+ years ago. i tend to use the Pot-in-Saucer method described in the link below. the beauty of this type of grow method is that it is basically impossible to over water plants. and the water line in the clear saucer makes it simple enough that a 5th grader can figure out if you need to add more. so it's nearly impossible to under water either. this past year my husband's father became ill and died, and we've been away for long stretches of time. by placing the pots in larger reservoir tubs, and having a friend drop by to check on things once in a while, i've been able to be gone for 3 or 4 weeks at a time, multiple times, without losing any plants. they can easily go 2 weeks without anyone checking on them. [when i'm home, i place the plants back in the smaller reservoir trays because i think that it's healthier for them. this gives them about a 1 to 2 week watering interval for most plants.] i feel like i'm still learning about my method - for instance, proper fertilization levels and such - but most plants have done well for me. i'm convinced that if i hadn't made the switch, i wouldn't have any surviving plants after this past year... and unfortunately, the next few years are likely to be more of the same. if anyone is interested in this method, check out the link below. there is also a lot of good info on the First Ray's website. his information is mostly slanted toward orchids, but it applies to houseplants as well. please don't think i'm implying that this method is 'no work' or 'perfect', but the question was about vacations, and i think that this is where this method shines. the snags, or complaints, are that the pots are heavy, the Hydroton media is expensive, and if you don't water and fertilize properly you can salt up the media and kill your plants. and if you decide to give it a try, as with any dramatic change... try switching a few test plants first, not your prized specimen or your grandmother's favorite plant. cheers, nancy Here is a link that might be useful: Houseplant Hydroculture...See More2 circuits sharing neutral
Comments (36)All previous posters on this subject have somehow missed the 500# gorilla in the room. Multiple branch circuits cannot be allowed to âÂÂshareâ a common neutral conductor run without increasing the current carrying capacity of that run (larger size, DO NOT DOUBLE RUN WIRE, gang breakers). In such application power lost to heat more than doubles for a doubling of current, following square law (I-squared-R), dangerously violates code and it will burn down. This is the very reasoning behind licensing of electricians; if you donâÂÂt understand this, do not perform wiring and do not shuffle the load centerâÂÂs runs. However, âÂÂbalanced neutral/phaseâ is valid for load runs and mandatory on the supply-side of the bus; and is taken advantage of, by discriminating technicians. Balanced is green, more efficient, reduces losses, brownout, etc. When a load is balanced between legs (2 just happens to work out to be single phase; and 3, three phase), it is NOT sharing a run, but current is mutually excluded from the common neutral run (i.e., current does not circulate to the neutral runâÂÂs lug) to the extent that each leg mirrors the other(s). Hexus, think exclusive OR (XOR, only analog). Each circuit when used alone has exclusive use of that run. Under no circumstances does current exceed the runâÂÂs rating, ANYWHERE. When the circuitâÂÂs legs have matched loads (in current mirror, reactances in quiescence), think about identical hot plates on each leg, then the neutral run to lug will be cold, out of circuit and may be snipped to no affect. The neutral run BETWEEN hot plates will carry just one circuitâÂÂs current for either/all leg(s) (in series for 2-leg circuit; 3-phase âÂÂmotorsâ have all neutrals removed--there is no need for them with no current to run). Instead of I-squared-R loss over MULTIPLE neutral runs to lug; the loss is over a short distance ONLY between hot plates. Circuit interrupters (breakers) are now required to be âÂÂgangedâ (hence branch circuit fuses are not allowed) in order to arrest all branch neutral current. Sleeping rooms (including family/den/living rooms) require a 'split circuit' AFCI. GFCI's will de-energize with PROTECTED neutrals in common....See MoreHelp me stylize my dining room cabinets
Comments (78)If you find something like a vase or sculpture that is an appropriate size and shape for the shelves (something tall that is almost the height of the shelf space) you could spray paint it a blue that looks good with your china or that looks good with your walls. Or white, if you end up with a colored background to the shelves. It could be originally metal or ceramic. Obviously nothing valuable - thrift stores are a good place to find this type of thing....See MoreRetail therapy and redecorating due to empty nest syndrome
Comments (42)Oh how I remember when my first baby left home for college. I think I told this story before, but it's so sweet I have to tell it again. When we came home from following his car to college, I broke down in tears. DH didn't say a word and went out to mow and probably shed some tears. Because his school was only an hour and a half away and his girlfriend at the time lived here, he came back the following Friday. Seven days after he left. When he pulled up in the driveway I ran out to greet him, and the water works started all over again. That boy of mine put both arms around me, hugged me tight, and said, "It's okay mom, I'm home." Swoon. But he never came home to live here again, instead, after he graduated then married, he built a house on some of our acreage with his wife and little one's. :) Back to the serious stuff! How fun for you and great therapy! Having a snore room comes in handy if your DH snores like mine does. I can't wait to see the finished product. Have fun!!...See MoreHU-507857590
