New Purchase: Two New Phals

Yet another two phals were added to my collection this weekend. Hope you enjoy them:

Phal #1: Dtps. Ever Spring Prince "Pretty Cat/Harlequin" This is a splash harlequin.

Phal #2: Dtps. Joy Angel Voice This is a spotted harlequin. Light pink flower with dark pink/purple heavy spotting in the center of the flowers.

Hey, Debbie. I see you love color, too! That Joy Angel Voice is drop dead gorgeous. I've been eyeing it at Big Leaf. Is that where you got them?

Your pictures really show the colors and the Harlequin patterns off. Enjoy! !!!

I did not get my Dtps Joy Angel Voice at Big Leaf Orchids. I bought mine in New York City. I see that at Big Leaf's website their Joy Angel Voice is also labeled as "Selene." Mine was not labeled this way, so I'm not sure if it's the exact same. My understanding is that these harlequins are always slightly different from eachother (no two have the same exact looking spotted flowers). So, mine does look a tad different from the one at Big Leaf. I also see that Big Leaf is selling theirs for $75! I didn't pay anything close to that. Seems kinda pricey to me.

do a google search for Dtps Angel Joy Voice Maybe you can find one for less money?

Hi, alexandra. Since you want so much to give good care to those phals, you should invest a few minutes of time into reading about them. Good notes on culture for phals are available at the Canadian Orchid Congress (see url below). Just scroll down for phals. Good culture notes are also available at Big Leaf Orchids, where Peter Lin has written up culture notes especially for hobby growers. At Big Leaf, click "information" in the banner. A few minutes invested in reading up will repay you handsomely in better health for your Grandma's orchids while they're in your care. For inexpensive species Phals, check out Oak Hill Gardens. They always have a big selection. But be sure to check out sizes, as a $4 bastianii is a small seedling. You don't need to buy a blooming size plant (price marked with an asterisk), but depending on your level of experience, you can choose one a year or so from blooming. Over the years, I have gotten many of my species Phals from them. Just a bit of information: Phal braceana is a cool-intermediate to cool-grower and will not be happy with 95F summer temps (I keep mine in the air-conditioning during the summer). Phal cochlearis grows on limestone cliffs and likes a more alkaline environment -- I have a few chunks of S. Fla coral rock in the pot with it. New To Orchids - Repotted Phal

Hi, Jodik. If you have two other orchids doing fine, you are doing ok, I'd say. IMO, a gardener's skills of eye and hand transfer pretty well to orchids. A lot of people here repot new orchids for the very reason you mentioned -- I'm one of them. East window, check. Soaked bark mix, check. Smallish clay pots, check. Rooting hormone, check. Yup, sounds ok to me. Good luck.

Phal orchid with nearly no root system growing a new leaf

I am in Buffalo, NY and my mini phal is indoors on a humidity tray between a north and east facing window. I have another Phal that is doing incredibly well with a lot of new root growth living next to the mini Phal. I use repotme.com Monterey dark imperial mix (orchiata bark, New Zealand AAA sphagnum moss, hyrdoton and some substrates to add air to the mix). I fertilize and use a probiotic in the summer. I am using an Orchitop Carousel pot which allows for a lot of air and optimal drainage. I placed an ultrasonic humidifier behind it for added moisture as the new pot allows the plant to dry out very quickly. I also placed sphagnum moss on top of the pot to try to let the orchid get extra moisture by the crown to promote new root growth. I have attached a picture below. As an example, I just did a search for that phal on google:

shows Dtps Angel Joy Voice "Selene" but shows that different plants have a bit different spotting.

This one looks very similar to what I have:

There is another splash harlequin that I've been eyeing too... it's the Brother Sandra Splash. Also looks very nice.

Beautiful phals counselor. I just picked up another last week right after I vowed, 'no more phals'. Then Tues night at our society meeting I bought another. It's a primary hybrid and will be a whitey, like I don't have enough white phals......but this one is really special. I'm hopelessly addicted. LOL
