Phal orchid with nearly no root system growing a new leaf

I have a 1 year old mini Phal orchid that had serious root rot. The crown is not rotting, but after trimming the dead roots the mini Phal only had 2 viable roots. The two remaining roots have a bit of dead parts towards the crown, but branched off and the longer parts of the roots are green and healthy. My mini pal began growing a new leaf mid april. I repotted and had to get rid of all the dead roots april 30. The leaf is growing well and most of the leaves are firm and healthy. Is there anything I can do ensure this phal grows a new healthy root system?

Where do you live? Are you growing indoors or outdoors?? You need to give us important information. It is impossible to help without knowing where this plant grows and how you are growing it.

Phals like warmth and bright light. Make sure your plant drains well and does not sit in water. Hopefully, you repotted in an orchid mix. Fertilize throughout the summer while it is in active growth.

I am in Buffalo, NY and my mini phal is indoors on a humidity tray between a north and east facing window. I have another Phal that is doing incredibly well with a lot of new root growth living next to the mini Phal. I use repotme.com Monterey dark imperial mix (orchiata bark, New Zealand AAA sphagnum moss, hyrdoton and some substrates to add air to the mix). I fertilize and use a probiotic in the summer. I am using an Orchitop Carousel pot which allows for a lot of air and optimal drainage. I placed an ultrasonic humidifier behind it for added moisture as the new pot allows the plant to dry out very quickly. I also placed sphagnum moss on top of the pot to try to let the orchid get extra moisture by the crown to promote new root growth. I have attached a picture below. Thanks shavedmonkey, remember I told you in another tread that we only get superthrive here in Jamaica well I use it with 20-20-20 every other watering. Oh and I prayed a lot too Ã°ÂÂÂ that's it. My Phal - Is this a spike and a new root?

Well, it has been 2 months and I'm almost there with the first bloom opening from this spike! Just FYI about the original post, the one on the right was a spike, the one on the left was a root. So I've only got one spike. The bloom on the opposite side of the spike from this pic has just cracked open slightly. I was hoping this one wouldn't have white blooms because the other orchid I have is white. From the color of the outside of these, is it obvious what color they are? Clearly it's a light cream color, so does that mean I have 2 white orchids now? Although there are some hints of color here and there. I was hoping for more color, but what can you do.

"I blame Home Depot. It was potted in nasty, moldy sphag which retained far too much water..." Home Depot merely retailed the plant which grew overseas in Thailand or some other South Asian wholesale operation. They potted the plant in the nasty, moldy sphag but a lot of fine orchids have grown in sphag and even the one currently under discussion at one time had seven leaves. Doesn't sound too shabby to me. Not trying to be argumentive just trying to focus or rather re-aim your anger S.T. The phal is picking up now because of the mid-summer light and heat but if nothing is done to maintain decent levels of light and heat through the winter it will backslide anew. Fatally this time since it will not have the reserves of size and vigor that it did this season. H

Hi, Jodik. If you have two other orchids doing fine, you are doing ok, I'd say. IMO, a gardener's skills of eye and hand transfer pretty well to orchids. A lot of people here repot new orchids for the very reason you mentioned -- I'm one of them. East window, check. Soaked bark mix, check. Smallish clay pots, check. Rooting hormone, check. Yup, sounds ok to me. Good luck.

Here is a picture of my three orchids together. The one all the way to the left is doing incredibly well, the one in the middle is a new "Just Add Ice" acquisition, and the one all the way to the right is the mini Phal in need of some help.

Thanks for providing growing info.

Your Phals look happy. It is summer and putting them outside to get fresh air and temp changes is good and Phals respond well. The leaves look a bit dark which would signal low light. You might increase the light level a bit. The new leaf is smaller than the previous leaves (unless it is still growing).

I grow my Phals in very bright light. They do well and flower well.

You are doing a good job. I bet you will get humidity as summer progresses and they would all appreciate some time outdoors.
