I meant to edit my post but accidentally hit submit instead. The thing on the left is angled downward and the tip is lighter in color. You can't see it all in this pic. The one on the right is angled upward and is darker on the tip, so I'm *thinking* I'm right.

Looks like a spike on the right to me. Roots generally are smooth and have a rounded tip. The one on the left could also be a spike, you'll know in a week or so.

I also see two knobs or bulges in front of the plant. These will be roots (spikes always come between the leaves). Roots can come from there or anywhere else. The new roots are something to celebrate as well.

Yay! I'm curious to see what color the flowers will be. They just gave it to me for free when I asked about it because it was in such horrible condition.

What will those new roots up there do? I'm still new to orchids. Do I just let them grow wherever? There are also roots coming up around the edges of the pot, starting to stick out of the spag. Do I just leave those alone as well?

I think I love new spike nubs better than anything else about orchids, Frank. They are just full of promise.

About the new roots coming (and the root ends peeking out):

Sounds like your phal is growing everywhere it can! If your sphag is a year old, you may want to repot, just to freshen the medium. This won't hurt the tiny new spike(s). If anything it will be a positive for them. The reason for this is that sphag breaks down after about a year, and once broken down it is harmful to the roots, which can go downhill rapidly in old sphag.

The new roots can grow into the medium, or outside it. However, roots outside the medium are a little harder to keep moistened, so I usually try to encourage them to grow into the medium if I can.

If you repot, you can put the plant a little lower in the pot, and fluff some sphag up near where the new root nubs.

If the plant doesn't need a repot, but root ends are starting to peek out at the top, I usually pile a little sphag on top of the ends (even tho my plants are in coconut husk chips. They will eventually grow thru the sphag, but in the meantime they are kept moist and humid.

I also pile a little fresh sphag on top of the chips, up around any new root nubs-- near is good enough. In my experience, sphag seems to stimulate new roots to grow toward and into it-- may be because it provides a lot of humidity and air when moist.

I'd say you've done really well so far-- follow your own instincts, and enjoy watching both the spikes and the new roots grow.

Thanks for the feedback. Actually, I did just repot with new spagh a few weeks ago. So I'll just add some more to cover the roots that are trying to escape, and around the new root growth.

I'm pretty sure it's only one spike. But that's good enough for me considering the shape it's in (2 leaves completely torn off, half another torn off).

To my eye, the protrusion on the left isn't far enough along to know for sure, but it shouldn't be long! The fact that the plant's alive and spiking is terrific. Whitecat8

Well, it has been 2 months and I'm almost there with the first bloom opening from this spike! Just FYI about the original post, the one on the right was a spike, the one on the left was a root. So I've only got one spike.

The bloom on the opposite side of the spike from this pic has just cracked open slightly. I was hoping this one wouldn't have white blooms because the other orchid I have is white. From the color of the outside of these, is it obvious what color they are? Clearly it's a light cream color, so does that mean I have 2 white orchids now? Although there are some hints of color here and there. I was hoping for more color, but what can you do.

Great job! For a white Phal, that's quite a bit of color. Some are pure white, which can be lovely, too - just depends on your tastes.

My rescue white Phal had a muddy brownish lip. A local grower assured me it wasn't diseased, but it sure was ugly.
