I had bought two male chimps from a primate colony in Holland. They lived next to each other in separate cages for several months before I used one as a [heart] donor. When we put him to sleep in his cage in preparation for the operation, he chattered and cried incessantly. We attached no significance to this, but it must have made a great impression on his companion, for when we removed the body to the operating room, the other chimp wept bitterly and was inconsolable for days. The incident made a deep impression on me. I vowed never again to experiment with such sensitive creatures. ~Christian Barnard, surgeon

That touches so many places in my soul. Being part of cardiology research team (mice), the realization that a life was taken that saved so many lives (they were the first ever), and oddly enough, high school. Instead of remembering his last name correctly, I wrote down "Dior" ;)

This touched my soul deeply. Of course they have feelings, and thoughts and one of these days, humans are going to give up calling them instincts and admit it.

I set up a live-trap to catch some problematic raccoons once. I heard a commotion outside and found a baby raccoon in the trap. The mother was going crazy, and wailing. She hid in the bushes when she saw me approach.......wise about humans. The sibling didn't know enough to hide, and kept approaching the trap, very upset. The mother was no doubt worried about both her babies, and there was no way she ran.

The sounds and anguish were very like what you'd expect from a human. Of course, I propped the door open and walked away and let them reunite. That was the end of the live-trapping.

LOL! That reminds me of what DH says is the secret to a happy marriage. All the husband has to do is to say,"Yes dear, you're absolutely right." But seriously, I don't think that a lot of people truly realize how much compromise goes into making a marriage work. Both sides of the equation need to use that phrase aa lot if the marriage is going to last. And you cannot say I love you enough.

I got confused initially as you have a different nick here but when I read your posts, I had no doubts that its you. There is only one person that I know who would take so much pain in conveying to the others what she knows with all her sincerity and honesty, without any desire for recognition or commercial benefit. God bless you. English Rose Forum was a nice place and we had few very good discussions there. I always learnt a lot from your posts. And BTW, don't bother much about those who refuse to listen (and thus learn). I absolutely agree with Bible verses that you have quoted in another thread. There a people who would never be able to come out of their so called "egos" so there is no point wasting time with them. I am so happy to be around and I have been reading the old threads for hours yesterday (I am on holidays nowadays). There is so much to learn I must confess. I have already got answers to some of my questions and will be asking more. Will try to post photos wherever I can. Let me acknowledge at the outset that with regards to organic rose growing, I am just a beginner and may not have anything profound to contribute. I will be more on the learning side. Nevertheless, I can provide information on behaviour of various rose cultivars in hot humid monsoon region of Islamabad. I won't say that it truly represents Zone 9a that you have in the US but it is close to it with regard to temperatures. What makes it different from US zone 9a is monsoon season where for two months (jul and aug), we have torrential rains, floods and very high humidity with temperatures ranging between 35-42*C. This is a torrid time for roses, all kinds of pests / fungus attack them and if the drainage is not good, most of them might die. At times, it might rain for two to three days at a stretch and whole lawn might be filled with 4-6 inches of water if the drainage has not been carefully designed. I don't have this issue in Islamabad as it is a semi-hilly area nevertheless one has to be careful while selecting location for rose pits. I will post my observations in a separate thread as advised. For years I've read that raccoons have the IQ of a 2 year old and pigs a 3 year old.That chimps are right under us as far as intelligence goes and crows the same as chimps.Deer and horses are the same.It's an interesting subject to me and brings up all kinds of questions but not for this forum.

A mother and four baby raccoons were eating the fish in our pond so we went out to see what we could do to save the fish. We had a have-a-heart trap and caught one of the little ones and the mother and siblings were going crazy knocking the trap around trying to set it free.

We were a sight running around the yard at 3:00 am with koi nets in our robes trying to catch the rest. Our intention was to take them to a nearby canyon and let them go. Finally decided they had gotten all but a couple of fish and it was a drought so just let them be and release the little one. No more fish in the pond till it is made critter proof. That was ten years ago or more and there have only been mosquito fish in there since.
