That's not nutsedge....looks like good ol quackgrass or crabgrass to me.

That's what I was afraid of. It grows like crazy, I cut my lawn on Thursday and that pic is from Saturday. You can see it's doubled my lawn in height in only 2 days. Here is another look at it from a little ways back.

Any suggestions on killing it.. other than killing that area of my lawn?

100% not nut sedge, and 100% not crabgrass. From the looks of it, it is most likely rough bluegrass or Kentucky 31. Only a non selective herbicide will kill it.

PLEASE kill that area of the lawn. Use RoundUp.

Are we serious? Now look.....everybody gets these situations, now and then. You got your basic nutsedge plant. One plant. You can kill it with RoundUp, and you can complain.....'Gee...I have a dead area, about the size of a half-dollar coin'....(Hey, life is tough all over).

Or you can wait. I mean, after all, one can't just create half-dollar sized dead patches, probably blonde in color, here and there in the lawn, right? Of course not.

So three weeks later, the patches are the size of an open newspaper. Gee, what do we do about that?

Well, we can wait, can't we? And watch that patch get to, well, how big? The size of a pup tent? The size of a kid's swimming pool? And what will we do THEN? Did somebody say 'wait'?

No. Grassy weeds are the bane of every lawn guy's existence. They are a pain in the buttski. Broad leaf weeds are SOOOO EASY....and grassy weeds are not. But something is going right, over there. Something is right enough, that that plant can make it. Make it? Hey, babe, that plant is going to THRIVE.....and when it does, you're not going to like it.

Kill it. Now. RoundUp.

The only serious question is, 'Do you wanna fix a bare spot, or do you wanna fix a bigger bare spot?'

Did you recently seed with Perennial Rye?

I learned something interesting when I was researching KBG seed; apparently most Perennial Rye mixes have a significant % of Annual Rye seeds (like .5 to 1.5%). They are listed on the label as "other".

Apparently its nearly impossible to get 100% Perennial Rye without some of the annual making it in there. I have some of the same stuff, Dale at seedsuperstore called it "phosphorescent grass" and said its an annual rye seed commonly found in Perennial mixes; it should dye off.

I did Round up mine, and re-seeded with the same mix I had used before and had a a few more spots of it in a different location, so Dale seems to be right.

based on the pics, i would say that it may be bermuda. i too had a small lighter green colored patch in my lawn that got 10x as big over a few weeks. i took a sample to a local nursery and had them validate my suspicions of it being bermuda. it took 5 to 7 applications of roundup to make it die. with roundup, i think we're at a point it may not work on killing warm season grasses since they are on the verge of going dormant if they aren't already.

if you pull the grass and see that it is sending surface rhizomes in all directions, that may be another indication that it is bermuda. good luck killing it.

jongoldman - No, I have not seeded with perennial rye. The lawn was originally a KBG sod that was laid when we bought the place. I have since overseeded with Boutique KBG one year and just this fall with Bluemaster KBG, so no rye.

I believe that I have narrowed it down to either Tall Fescue or Quack Grass. They both look similar from what I have read and seen on-line, so I plan on taking it in to a local nursery for an opinion. I think either way I can count on having to use a non-selective herbicide to get rid of it.
