Need help identifying weeds and reseeding lawn

I'm not sure what type of weed this is in my back yard? It is the majority of the back yard and I was curious if I could just spray it with a herbicide and then aerate and reseed? Or do I need to kill the entire back lawn and then aerate and reseed? I live in southeast Missouri.

It could be Spurge. I can't really tell from the picture, it's too bright. If it looks like the linked weed then it's fairly easy to kill but keeping it away will be harder. It looks like the majority of the area pictured is weeds. It gets to a point where trying to save some lawn is more taxing than a complete redo. Some say the tipping point is ~50%.

Aerating or doing anything to disturb your soil is going to bring up weeds seeds. Using good herbicides, Tenacity at seeding and Prodiamine thereafter can help with weeds.

Possibly Chickweed, a plant that grows best in a soil that lawns really like, a rich, near neutral soil. Chickweed is a cool weather annual and so it will die off as temperatures rise. Most all lawn seed mixes I have seen contain some Kentucky Blue Grass, some kind of Fescue, and some Perennial Rye and some even have annual bluegrass. Glyphosates will kill everything it is sprayed on and is considered by the World Health Organization as a potential carcinogen, probably not the best material to use to kill plants. Fescues are fairly wimpy and covering them with an impervious (sunlight proof) covering for a couple of weeks will kill them and allow reseeding right away, something plant poisons may not allow. kimmq is kimmsr

I'm certainly no expert, but I know you can get a clue if you look at the shape of the stem between where the roots begin up to where the leaves branch out. If it feels triangular or some other shape that helps to narrow it down.
