You applied broad leaf "weed" poisons to a grass and those will not kill grasses. What will kill grasses are grass poisons, but they will also harm your Bermuda.

I'm terrible at identifying grass types by photo. From your description, it sounds like rye grass or tall fescue (non-TTTF).

Thanks, dchall -- I try really hard never to allow any weeds to go to flower (not always successful, but I try). Given how widespread this got, I'm not detecting any budding/flowering at all -- is that even possible? Some of the 'older' patches had actually started to yellow/brown and go dry -- no flowers. We live in SW Houston. During the summertime, DH mows at the highest level (so, 3"?). We had so much beneficial rain once a week last spring, the sprinklers never went on. During summertime, we've got the zones set to 60 minutes twice a week -- starting 4 a.m. It's not as though we've had much of a winter this year -- I think we woke up to less than a handful of mornings when there was visible frost on the neighbor's rooftops. But the grass has definitely slowed to a point where DH is mowing only a couple of times a month -- I don't think he's lowered his mower.

Thank you for mentioning Velvet grass because as soon as I saw a picture of the sead head, I knew I've seen that as well recently. I do not think it is my primary problem, but now I know to look out for it. Never heard of it. I'm not native to the PNW, but I used to think having a lawn here would be easy given the weather...I forgot almost everything grows here...haha. I can see why one would say torpedograss because I saw that one too....they look pretty similar. The picture above was of a plant I deliberately took that looked spindly to show some of the characteristics. They usually start a little more bunchy, haven't seen a rhizome of that size (rather large looking in diameter from the pix of torpedo), and is doing best in the driest section of my lawn because it is always full sun and I think torpedo prefers water. The map of torpedograss does not include WA, but given how the climate has changed here in just the last decade, we may see more warm season grasses start to creep in. I think quack is the correct answer...for some reason, good pictures of it are hard to come by. I will try to take some more right now.
