Fall seeding, Too much crabgrass

First let me give a little history. New home, bought last November, and never tended to a lawn in my life (outside of mowing. So this is all new to me.

Through a lot of research, I find out that fall is the best time to seed and feed for the winter to build up root growth. Small problem, my front yard (the only yard I worry about) is about 90% crabgrass. Now here is the question.

Should I wait until next year to reseed (after all the crabgrass is gone and I have put down a preemergent) or should I just tear up the grass and start anew.

Any help would be great.
