SoCal: 7/26 Fullerton and San Diego Sales/Shows PIX !!!

HEY GARDENWEB ORCHID FOLKS !!!

Thursday July 25 through Sunday July 27 marks the Fullerton Arboretum Cacti / Succulent Show and Sale in Fullerton, Southern California also marks the Orchid Sale and Show at El Prado in San Diego !!!

With so many different species and varieties, these were definitely THE EVENTS NOT TO HAVE MISSED !!!

If you're in the area, head out there before it ends !!!

Here are some of my pix taken that day at the Fullerton Arboretum as well as a trip to El Prado in San Diego, for the Orchid Sale and Show !!!

Wow! Wonderful pictures! The orchids are all gorgeous! I also like the Plumeria and the Epiphyllum! And the cacti are all wonderful, too... and the architecture! Wow!

All these fabulous shows and plant sales on the west coast... it almost makes me wish I lived in California! Thank you for sharing your wonderful day!

I have a small Plumeria "Aztec Gold" that looks similar in size to those in some of your photos... it's a cutting from a dear friend in Florida... it's still young, and probably won't bloom until next year... but it's nice to see what it will look like in bloom, with the flowers sticking up above the leaves!

Again, thank you for sharing your day... the pictures are awesome!

LOL.....that guy in the very first picture with the 'little red wagon' is VERY telling!! I would need two or three, AND some little helpers!! Thank you for posting these!!

Zaiger was working with different cherry tree cultivars from Spain. It's quite possible—I would even say very likely—they could have used Cristobalina to breed Royal Lee. The descriptions of these cherries sound quite similar to each other in many respects, dark colored flesh, sweet, and good flavor. quote by goyo626: "I tried searching for cristobalina cherry patent info but nothing comes up. " I feel reluctant to post this again, because I have already posted in several other places in this message board, but here it goes... There is a low chill Spanish heirloom variety cherry called Cristobalina. It is self-fertile and requires about 200 chill hours. Cristobalina has been grown for generations of cherry growers in Andalucia and Valencia, where winters are as mild as they are in Southern California, and reliably produces fruit despite lack of a cold winter. It is known to flower mid-February and produces dark purple, delicious sweet cherries. The only negative is that the fruit does not have as much edible flesh as other more popular cherry varieties, but thinning the tree can help lead to more full-sized fruit. Of course there would not be a patent on it, and this variety is not widely known in America.

Congratulations Andy, and thanks for the great photos. Needless to say, that Jungle Jade got me salivating - what a beauty! We don't often see such strongly variegated V. platynema as that one - wow! I also love that Quesnelia edmundoi var. rubrobracteata. It is one of my top 20 favourite broms. Mine thrive growing epiphytically and glow dark red in the sun. All the plants are beautifully grown. You had some stiff competition Andy - but red is good! Sounds like you're their man for future shows, having survived twin chairs. Bring on the WBC! K :)

Baci, thank you for the recommendations. I have several mature queen palms around our pool. They are beautiful (and messy).I guess you have to give a little to get a little. I have heard bamboo might be messy too, so I haven't given them much thought. Are there any you would recommend? We get a steady wind every afternoon at 4:00. Orchids are on my list of filler plants, but I have zero experience. We have one in a pot that has been doing well, and has flowered for the past 2yrs. Also regarding Fullerton Arboretum, they are really bad about labeling plants! I would like to go there again when they have a docent guided tour. Gary, thank you for your input. We seldom get under 60 degrees here accept for the occaissional early morning in the high 40's. I am hoping that the Dwarf Jamaicans will be happy in a funky microclimate in the SW corner. Is there anything I can do to increase my possibility of success? When I bought the allamanda it was labeled "Mandevilla", but I knew it wasn't, but the Mrs. liked it. I am hoping it will do well on a west facing wall. With the heliconia 'Gaudalupe'I am taking the shotgun approach. I have 7, that will be planted in different places, and I am hoping a few will survive. I have been buying most of my plants online and have tried to research their preferences before buying, but sometimes I just take a gamble.

In my area there are different options for showing instructions. The most popular, because it is the easiest for the agent to set up showings is call/show/keybox. This means that the agent just needs to call the contact number, which is usually the seller's number, then either talk to the seller or leave a message that they will be showing the house. Then they go show it, letting themselves in with the keybox. The other options are appointment only/call seller, and call listing office/appointment only. As you can imagine, when an appointment must be set up through a third party - the listing agent - it makes it much more complicated for an agent who is trying to show up to a dozen homes in one day to schedule their time. I can't imagine trying to coordinate schedules if I had to call 5 or 6 agents, then wait to hear back from them while they call the sellers, and hope that the stars align and everyone is amenable to showing their homes according to schedule. (I am an assistant to an agent and I set up showings for her, and it makes my brain hurt to think of doing that!). Especially when the homes are not in close proximity to each other. So yes, you can request that all showings be scheduled through your agent, but know that if you do that you will most likely cut down on the number of showings you get. Otherwise, be prepared to have agents in your home at any time. It's no fun, but the quicker you sell your home the quicker it will be all over. And making your home easy to show should help it sell faster.

If you snooze, you lose. Just think how many new plants you could have gotten and your little red wagon would have enjoyed the outing! I like people who go prepared :>)
