Help id weed and how to get rid of it.

Well, I have a lawn weed that is taking over in certain patches througout my lawn. I have a tall fescue lawn but in some small and some large patches it looks like I have bermuda grass. It has sometime very long stolons and if I let go a few days without mowing, gets a 3 (or so) star seed head on it. I raked it up last fall and pulled as much of it up as I could and overseeded with fescue. In teh spring, the fescue came in beautifully but around June this weed came back and took over again.

Any help would be much appreciated. This week even gets into my flower and tree beds. It never dies, even in the beds where I can spray straight weed killer. It dies but comes back.

Certainly sounds like bermuda. That's why it is a weed to so many people. Since it is a grass and your grass is a grass, there are no specific killers for bermuda that do not affect your target grass. Basically you're screwed. The only way to get rid of the bermuda is to nuke the entire lawn...twice. If you do that now you might kill the bermuda and still have time to replant fescue.

Bermuda LOVES fescue. Fescue is a thin plant except when it is at its very best. Bermuda loves to get in the thin spots and tangle around. As long as you live in zone 8 you should consider bermuda to be a constant.

The best thing you can do is mow at your mower's absolute highest setting. Bermuda does not like ANY shade. Even the shade from tall grass can be too much for bermuda.

Definitely not Garlic Mustard, it does not spread vegetatively (thank goodness, it's bad enough as it is!!). Definitely not Wild Ginger, at least not the native one. Unfortunately, I don't know what it actually is! Reminds me of some Campanula I saw in another thread, at least that's the best ID they came up with (on Name That Plant). Doesn't it ever flower? Getting rid of unwanted plants while small and easy to handle is the key to maintaining control in a garden. If you didn't plant it, the odds are 99%+ you don't want it. When mowing, aim the chute away from beds to prevent throwing seeds into them. If it won't pull up easily, patches like this (solid area of unwanted plant growth) can be smothered.

If the stems are velvety I think you do have Rhus typhina, Stags Horn Sumac. It is a spreading, suckering, clump forming shrub and will continue to pop up unless you can remove all the roots and the original parent. But it is native to the US so you might just learn to live with it to a certain extent. It has brilliant Autumn colour.
