Trumpet vine or wisteria? I 'mistakenly' planted a trumpet vine 15 years ago, tried to remove it two years later and I am still having shooters pop up n my yard.

Now that you mention it, I see a really ugly shrub/tree in the ravine behind my house with those leaves. Is it possible that they've extended across the entire yard?

Yes, it's quite possible...I've known poplars to extend roots and sprout more than a hundred feet from their "parent" tree (with a house in between). Though both the trumpet and wisteria were possibliites, I'd like to also extend Alianthus as a possibility.

Do you mean the mature shoots as in the one on the actual tree? If so, they look pretty fuzzy to me.

Next question: Is there anything I can do to stop these things from invading my yard?

No, not unless you can remove the source or install some root blocking tech, like a several foot (don't know how deep) trench.

If the stems are velvety I think you do have Rhus typhina, Stags Horn Sumac. It is a spreading, suckering, clump forming shrub and will continue to pop up unless you can remove all the roots and the original parent. But it is native to the US so you might just learn to live with it to a certain extent. It has brilliant Autumn colour.

The photo of the whole shrub wasn't visible when I posted that I thought it was Rhus typhina. I am puzzled by the white pointed growths. Can you show any closer pictures?

I've had some decent results after cutting back invasive tough woody things like that & applying Roundup directly to the cut surfaces. I even cut down into the surface so the chemical can go deeper.

I think it's a type of False Sumac. I planted it in my garden and found it to be very invasive by suckering. Yes, use Roundup if you want to get rid of it permanently.

I have searched but can't find a plant called False Sumac. Can you give a botanical name?
