Marathon II and dogs?

When we recently undertook some fairly major landscaping in our backyard, I asked both the nursery and our landscaper what the best lawn was to hold up to dogs--both urine and play.

We have a grass area that is sunny most of the day, but we also have a large umbrella tree that limits the sunshine on the eastern side of the yard (we live in So. California). In the past, we had a Bermuda lawn with fescue seeded for the shadier areas. The dogs would obliterate the lawn in the winter months and it would take forever to get it revived for the spring, but we never had problems with urine spots. We wanted to have a lawn that was green all year round.

Both nursery and landscaper recommended Marathon II grass as the hardiest for dogs (they also suggested St. Augustine, but we'd had that and no one liked it). We had the Marathon II installed and it WAS beautiful. Now, one month later, the urine spots are almost connected now throughout the lawn and the grass doesn't seem to be healthy from dogs laying on it.

Is there anything we can do to survive dogs and restore our Marathon II lawn? We deep water every other day and water for 2 minutes every other day to try to wash the urine off the lawn.

I feel like we've made a very expensive mistake.

Thanks for your help.

Stan
