KBG at 27 days

My KBG turns 4 weeks old tomorrow so I figured I'd post a pic. I got great germination due to the excellent weather (TS Hanna excluded). Seeding rate was approximately 3 lbs for 1000 sq feet. Cultivars are Midnight 2, Moonlight, and Bedazzled. I did half the front this year and the goal is to do the other 1/2 next Summer.

looks great so far....come next June you'll be drooling every time you look at it. how long did it take for the seeds to start germinating?

turf toes, Well, you set the bar so dang high, that I'm just trying my best to keep up! toomuchtodo, I think that sometime photos look better that what is right in front of you. Post some pics of your renovation. boatboy24, Don't forget preemergent in the spring! Oooohhh you got that right! I will use the best stuff I can find, if it has to be synthetic so be it. If I do get any weeds next summer I will use any means necessary to get rid of them. If there are too many for the Weed Hound to handle, I will get something like Bayer weed killer that comes in a hose end spray bottle. I did not do all of this work to have a yard of weeds, that's for sure. I will be using organic ferts next year, then after the lawn gets nice and thick I will switch over to the organic pre-m also.

Rutgers: Kentucky bluegrass germination time varies by variety and by seed lot, among other variables. In my experience, big seeded common or forage type varieties like Kenblue, which I believe is used in Scotts Pure Premium (check the label), as a rule, germinate in about half the time (10 days) as a typical elite type bluegrass. Two years ago I planted about 15 diffferent improved varieties side by side. If I recall correctly, germination ranged from 12 days (Midnight II) to 25 days (Midnight). If you tried to duplicate the test today using new seed lots, you would probably get the same time range, but the order of the varieties might be different. As a rule of thumb, I find the better the ultimate lawn, the slower the germination.

I used my scotts classic reel mower as well this weekend and I must say how impressed I am with the cut of a reel mower. I hadn't used one since I was a kid and at that time I could care less about the quality of the cut itself. If I had A) more time or B) less yard I would seriously consider using one all the time. I may actually alternate every other cut or so between the reel and my other lawn mowers.

I began noticing some germination after seven days. By 10 days I noticed germination all over the place.

looks great... but dont do what i did, and throw fertilizer down next week...it burned alot of my grass, and i almost want to cry, for fear that now that this new stuff coming in is crabgrass or poa, and that i might have to start over.

dont mow the lawn too early like i did too... theres alot of bad info out there and i bought into some of it. good luck.

That looks excellent! I can't see the yellow spots you mentioned previously, and I appreciate diclemeg's caution, but if you do have some yellowing and the ground is not saturated, I would go ahead and feed again. Can't tell you how much that helped me around this time last year.

But your lawn is thick enough that you don't really need to mow to encourage lateral growth just yet unless you have some really high spots. And if you do, just cut them down with a string trimmer. This way you can let the fert work, get a burst of strength from the grass, and mow it then, when it is strong and growing more vigorously.

That does look nice, You'll be happy with that next summer for sure.

I just looked back at my yard at 31 days last year and It looks similar, but I had a LOT of weeds growing. That may have been due to the soil sitting there for 2 months growing weeds and producing lots of weed seeds before I planted grass on 8/15.

Keep watering and feeding it, it should grow like crazy over the next 4 weeks.
