Oh Man! I live in SE Michigan and while it's too late this year, you have me all fired up about doing a glysophate nuke on my KBG next spring and putting down some bentgrass. Also, I love your part of the country. Have had the privilege to play Blackwolf Run (both courses), but haven't made it back to do Whistling Straits. I do have that on my bucket list though. Not sure you knew about, or even need this yet, but there is a special herbicide (trimec flavor) just for bentgrass. All that time and money you've put into your lawn, no sense burning it up with some generic weed killer. I'll put the link down below for you. Plus I noticed all kinds of bentgrass seed, in various small poundages. I noticed that there are not too many places to buy bentgrass seed in small quantities. Do you think that means bentgrass for residences are not that popular? I would think with all the golfing fools out there that they would entertain the idea of a bentgrass lawn. Interesting. I put down 4 pounds per 1,000-square-feet. (Though I know some here have applied at three pounds per thousand with good results too) I actually set the seeder to seed less than that and made multiple passes. The end result was about 4 pounds per thousand. The reason I did this was to ensure good coverage and that I didn't end up with little seeding rows from going in only one direction. I'm watering three times a day for about 7 minutes each. I should say I have watered at that rate. I think I'm now going to start watering twice a day for about 11 minutes each. The actual time you water really is determined by the conditions you face. I would start with three times a day and then see how the soil looks after a couple of days. You just want to ensure that you keep it moist at all times (but not puddling).

Billhill, Yup. I agree. I think I've gotten better results this time too, just because I have a better idea about what to do. (I owe bestlawn, bill and AJ for that) But you are surely right about the anxiety level. That first year with the front yard, I was very anxious about whether it would come in or not.

JonGoldman Â Judging by your photos, you have enough seedlings in and around the gaps in those step stones to fill in real well by next June. Just keep to your plan. I know its hard to believe at this point but by next June 15th, you will be blown away with your new lawn. Rutgers Â In my limited experience with KBG (two years), it will spread the most in June and July. I use a lot of compost. Weak areas, bare spots, dog pee spots repaired by plugging all get extra compost. When I have plugged the center of a bare spot and really need it to fill in from all directions, I use generous amounts of compost and alfalfa pellets. My results are nothing short of spectacular. Last spring, around May 15, 10 inch dinner plate sized dead spots, plugged with 3 inch plugs taken from an inconspicuous area, filled in completely by July 15. This year, my lawn has really shown the benefits of two years mostly organic fertilizing. I firmly believe that coaxing the highest performance from your lawn lies in the soil. I threw down more seed at about 14 days or so in that middle spot that had been brown (the area that changed so much between day 17 and 25).

Thanks for the compliments all. It was only possible though because of all the great advice I've gotten over the years on this forum.

Funny you mention that. I actually got the old Scott's classic reel mower (which I purchased two years ago just for cutting during seeding projects) out yesterday. Most of the new grasslings still aren't tall enough.

But in the few areas that ere tall enough, I wanted to get that tillering started as soon as possible!

What height are you considering as tall enough? What height did you cut down to?

Well, the areas that I did cut, I had the reel mower set at 2-inches (grass may have been 2.25 inches).

Most of the grass is at about an inch or less.

I used my scotts classic reel mower as well this weekend and I must say how impressed I am with the cut of a reel mower. I hadn't used one since I was a kid and at that time I could care less about the quality of the cut itself.

If I had A) more time or B) less yard I would seriously consider using one all the time. I may actually alternate every other cut or so between the reel and my other lawn mowers.

Yup. I really like it too. Now the the whole yard is entirely KBG, it will make it possible to use it more often on the established lawn next spring.

(I found that That tall fescue is especially tough to cut with the reel mower. The KBG, on the other hand, it cuts like a knife through butter.
