Need to bypass water softener for lawn/bed watering?

Our water provider switched to a new well and the hardness has gone thru the roof. Dishes/toilets/bathrooms are a mess so a water softener is a necessity before more damage is done. My lawn is established, but I plan on putting some new beds in that will require some extensive watering until the trees/shrubs/plants are established. Should I by-pass the outside hose bibs so that the water doesn't go through the softener? Or should I use potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride in the softener (although I hear that leads to sludge buildup in the softener).

Thoughts? Recommendations? Is there a better forum for my questions? I did search, but wasn't able to find a specific response to my question. Most were in regards to watering house plants or for aquariums/fish.
