The lawn gurus here helped me redo my front lawn a few summers ago. The questions asked are as follows:

What lawn do you have now? What do you like/dislike about it? Can you post a picture? What do you do now to care for it?

Generally, Kentucky Blue Grass does very well here. The mix I have in my front lawn is Midnight, Moonlight and a third I can't recall right now. Mallory (Bestlawn) is the KBG expert around here, she recommended it. There may be an even better cultivar available now.

I found it hard to get elite seeds without ordering online. My backyard is a fescue blend that I just reseeded Thursday (woo-hoo! rain!). I chose that because I have kids and a dog who would not be happy to be kept off the lawn for the length of time it takes KBG to germinate. I can be less fussy about that area, and gaze proundly at the front.

The thing is, this is the time to seed. You would really have to shake a leg to get the seed and get it down before Labor day. You could always start now planning for next year if you aren't planning a total reno. Spot kill or weedhound weeds, water mow and fertilize properly, level any uneven parts of the yard. You may discover your current lawn is just fine.

I ordred from Pawnee Buttes (Glenn) but they are all out of midnight untill next year already.

I am seeding LD weekend. I hope to God it isn't too late by then. I'm putting al ot of effort, and $$, into trying to get a good lawn going next year.

nice lawn, it kind of is right now, just some brown pathces in the front that I am going to scrape up and repelenish with new soil and reseed. I have som weeds, mostly closeer to the driveway. I will post some pic later this evening, my pic website seems to be down for maintenance.

SO if I wanted to put down some seed, overseed do I aerate first? usually thats not done till September and NOW is the time to seed.

Aerating before seeding improves the seed to soil contact, so if you're planning to aerate, you should do that before seeding. And September is only a little more than a week away, so you wouldn't be moving the schedule up all that much.

Mr. O'Reilly, I just don't see anything the matter with that lawn. Apparently good color, apparently good density, and a nice height. 'Apparently' is simply a nod to the fact that digital photos can vary a shade up or down. But what I see looks very nice.

Have you considered a plugger? With that tool, you can:
a. Repair the soil in a patch of dead lawn. Take the old soil out, put the new soil in.
b. Take plugs of your existing sod from non-obvious spots in your lawn. That leaves a hole, about 2" x 2". Fill that hole with new topsoil. Step on it with your foot, that will level it perfectly. It will grow over in nothing flat. It's not really visible, even before it grows over.
c. Put the plugs, nicely spaced, into your new patch areas of topsoil (I believe you said 'next to the driveway' or some such). Those plugs will expand, spread out, and fill in nicely, in that new topsoil you put down.

Everything matches. And looks great.

That's an interesting looking tool. One thing to remember is that it will only work with grasses that spread through rhizomes or stolons.

I was considering taking plugs if my native grasses take off in spots and languish in others, but I was thinking of using the turf hound, which makes much smaller holes. But I'm not sure how well native grasses would transplant, considering the fact that most of their roots are not in the top 12 inches of the soil.
