Any New Yorkers/taxi cab people???

If I can afford it, I want to take a cab in New York from the airport to my hotel which is about seven miles, part of which is through the heart of Manhattan. Does anyone have ANY idea how much such a ride will cost?

If it's too much $$$, I gotta TRY and figure out the subway system, in which case the next time you see my face, it'll be on the back of a milk carton.

Sorry I can't help with NYC cab fare but in Boston it would be around $50.00 (on a good day w/o traffic). Some hotels offer a shuttle service from the airport to hotels - I would ask if yours does.

I would inquire about a shuttle bus, like an airporter. Last time I was in NY I took a taxi from LaGuardia to my friend's house in Queens and it cost me $13. Going from her place back to LaGuardia only cost me $10 in a taxi.

Oh that is great!!!! I'm not a New Yorker but I just love The City! My DD and I were just there in March - it's one of our most favourite places to visit! I have found that if you simply pull out a map, someone will stop and ask you what you're looking for and steer you in the right direction. I am from Toronto, but don't live there now, but I will always be a Torontonian! I find that there are many similiars between the two cities. We were devastated over 9/11 as it felt like it happened to our family! You picked yourselves up, dusted yourselves off and soldiered on, in true New York fashion. You should be proud to be a New Yorker! It is an amazing place with amazing people! BJ

You will want to take the Harlem line of Metro-North, which is a regional system. Here is a link to the website which includes the schedule and fare information - http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/fares.htm You don't want to take a taxi up there! The train is the way to go.

My neighbors have a whole tub of it planted and growing already. Theirs is in a fairly sheltered spot, but leafy and getting ready for the salad bowl. Nice to hear about your bulbs, I finally figured out that mine need good fertilizer after blooming and as much sun as is possible, and now I've got a pretty good show of daffs and hyacinths (crocuses are done) with Lilies showing their crowns too. Volunteer seedlings already showing from celandine, dicentra eximia, montauk daisy, and thousands of shiso.

About 6-7 years ago, I took a cab from LaGuardia airport to Manhattan, and was told up front it would be $30. That seemed reasoinable, and I paid it. However, your hotel may provide some kind of free transport. Call them and ask. Many hotels offer vans between them and all the local airports. There is also a fairly new train connection between JFK Airport to Jamaica Long Island Railroad Statyion, and the NYC Subway system. The Air Train runs 24 hours a day and costs exactly $5. Lots of luck and have fun! New York city is a blast!

I think the cab fare from JFK is $45. DH and I took a shuttle for $15 each (from Newark) but it took a long time and the driver got lost in China Town and Little Italy looking for a very small hotel on a side street. It took a long time to get to Manhattan but the price was right.
I checked JFK website and found lots of info on getting from the airport to Manhattan.
I think the cab fare is set by the city of New York.
I took the airport train and then transferred to the subway to go to 59th St. near Columbus Circle in Manhattan last time I went but DS was my tour guide. I think it is doable.
I found people to be really helpful when I was there.
If you take a bus, have exact change in quarters.....we learned that the hard way when I was there with DH.

Thanks for the replies. Just got an email from the hotel. There is NO shuttle service and they didn't even offer an alternative - just said, "Take a cab."

Geez, I'm getting tired of traveling and zero customer service at these hotels.

I'm assuming it's LaGuardia.

take a bus instead--less to figure out. Just find the spot to stand, wait for it to arrive, and get off near Grand Central. THEN take a cab

Look on the map linked below for the NY Airport Service Express Bus stops.

(or use one of those other options)

(if it's JFK, you can take a bus, or take the AirTrain, which is VERY well marked, VERY easy to use, and puts you on a single subway line that takes you into midtown. There's a decent website w/ info on it.
