I actually have my large platters laying in drawers. However, once my pantry shelves go in I plan on switching them to a shelf in there. I have a lazy susan in the corner. All small appliances are on there and I probably go in there daily. So far I like that too.

I will do base cabs with roll out shelves only on my hutch/pantry/buffet piece, but to store different things than you - canned goods and other "larder" type items. I posted a question on that once, and decided for my purposes that would work better than drawers. Like remodelfla, I will have bulky/odd shape items in a corner susan.

We have one with pull outs to keep our food processor, Blender and mixer.

Since doing our mudroom in all drawers and only leaving 1 cupboard. I will have 2 cupboards in the kitchen. Lower sink and 1 next to the fridge. Oh, and a shallow one in the island.
I dont have specific plans for it but I know want an option. And I can always add a roll out to it later if it bugs me.

Little bit of form over function here. Though I was originally all about drawers I will have three cabs with pullouts along with my drawers. My cab maker thought it would look better to break up the look of many drawers as I have a 16 foot stretch. Also, I have a warming drawer which dictates the height of my drawers and would limit my storage due to awkward sizes. Like Elba, my pantry will be doors with pullouts too. Just a feeling that will work better for me. But not a worry for you with your walk-in, right?

I did include a couple of base cabs for very specific purposes. One holds my giant stockpots, nested (16-quart with a strainer inside a 30-quart). Another is a tray cabinet to store, in addition to a few trays, my cutting boards and cookie sheets.

All my large bowls and many of my large platters and serving dishes go in the deep cabinet above my refrigerator.

I have a quirky kitchen, so I combined a lot of things. i have two regular bases but added pullouts inside; I like that the pullouts are adjustable- they can be moved up or down, or even take one out for something very tall. I have a 15" base with three woven baskets- an open front. I have another 15" that is the trash pull-out. Then, one 3-drawer base, which I think looks very handsome. I don't have any two cabinets that are the same.
Like an above poster, I have a huge cabinet atop the fridge for crockpots and the big stockpot.

I have lots and lots of drawers but I wouldn't want to be without my non-drawer cabinets. Like sombreuil mongrel, I like having the ability to adjust the heights of fixed and roll out shelves to what works best. The ease of opening a drawer has been pretty much beaten into us on this forum. But I've found that sometimes it's easier to just open a door and to grab something off of a shelf.

Non drawer cabinets in our kitchen (other than 2 sink bases):

--a 24" deep fixed shelf cabinet in the prep area. I love keeping large mixing bowls on the bottom shelf. I can see the entire stack so that I know where the one I want is. I can slightly lift the upper bowls to grab the one I want without having the sides of a drawer getting in the way. I keep the slow cooker I use 3-4 times a year behind the mixing bowls. Stacked Corningware is also kept in this cabinet.

--3 cabinets with 2 shallow drawers on top and a shortened cabinet below. I keep stock pots on a roll out in one these cabinets, small appliances on a roll out in another, and tray dividers in the 3rd.

--2 corner super susans--one holds "to go" stuff--tupperware, lunch boxes, snack bags, disposable plastic storage. The other holds drinks in cans and bottles, the salad spinner, lettuce keeper, extra pans for toaster oven and extra tray for mw.

--13" deep fixed shelves for cookbooks, colanders, glass mw bowls with lids, small mixing bowls.

--roll outs in the base of our tall baking cabinet for our tall stack of pie plates, extra bags of sugar and flour, various shaped cake/bundt pans.

--trash/recycling pull out.

I first started collecting cabinet brochures in 1991. After planning a new kitchen for 14, years, the last thing I wanted to do was to create one that I would outgrow quickly. I love having a variety of storage--some flexible/changeable (drawers and roll outs) and some not (drawers and super susans.) A friend put in an all-drawer kitchen 25 years ago and she loved it. But she had something I don't, a nearby closet for the items that couldn't be fit into the drawers.

Our other deep storage is above our fridge and in the upper portions of our pantry and baking cabinets.

We will have a pull out corner cabinet (IKEA) and 3 shallow cabinets in the island on the seating side. Other than that, it's all drawers.

I have 2 china cabinets though that I keep all my nice china and larger dishes. My only concern was for storing the mixer but I'm hoping it will fit in the corner cabinet.

Two skinny cabs ... one for cookie sheet/baking pan storage and the other for cutting boards. Also the pull out/step on trash & recycle cabinet. In the hutch I have two lower cabs one for liquor storage the other for large pieces seldom used and cat food (the cab is right next to their feeding station).

Celine--My cabs were supposed to be done this week, but between his last job taking longer and me not being able to figure out storage in a couple of areas it's taking longer. I'm hoping they'll be done by the end of June. I've been working on this whole house reno for so long that I almost believe it'll never get done.

Ca_mom--Yes, my pantry will store all my larder goods so I don't have to figure out cab storage for that, thank goodness! ;)

I do have cabinet storage above the wall ovens and the fridge. And, thanks for the reminder Remodelfla, Zelmar, and Slush, I will have a darned susan corner.

It's funny that I posted a question about putting some base cabs in my 50" of peninsula for the items in my #1 above and everyone pushed drawers at me instead. This confirms my plan to keep 2/3 of it cabs.

You know, I think, that I went for form over function on our island, and regretted it. I have now turned all the cabinets there into drawers, other than the sink cab.

I have one cabinet of vertical storage in my baking area for cookie sheets, etc.

I keep my platters in drawers, small appliances in drawers, some of my mixing bowls in drawers. Other large ceramic bowls are in my dish hutch and open shelf.

The only remaining doored base cabinets are to each side of my stove area. In one we store the deep fryer, vacuum sealer, and oh, I do keep my giant stainless bowls in it, too. On the other side, I have several shelves for my larger baking pans and cooling racks. If I were to do it over, I'm not sure those cabinets would be configured as they are. I might keep the fryer elsewhere and put all drawers there, too. It's just so nice to pull a drawer open, see exactly what you need and lift up. I detest roll-out shelves, so the drawers far exceed those, and of course, getting down on the floor to peer into the adjustable, but stationary shelves.

am I too late? I have a corner cabinet with a lazy susan on one side, and a 12" cabinet on the other (I have a teeny tiny kitchen). I keep tupperware on the top shelf and all my cookie sheets, cooling racks, and cutting boards are on the bottom. it works really well for us but it seems like everyone here has much, much bigger kitchens than mine so I'm not sure that helps any.

as another poster referenced above, i am going to use the deep cab above fridge for bulky tray storage and bigger stuff that i do not use very often. i had the cabinet maker build it to be the full depth of the fridge for that purpose. my kitchen is small, i need all the storage i can find!

Four cabinets without drawers. In them: juicer, 5 gallon buckets of coconut oil and baking molasses (oh how i wish my cabinets were frameless!!!!), serving bowls and platters, canning jars, other bulk items (flours, powder sugar), gallon jugs of soy sauce, gallon bucket of nutritional yeast.

oh I should add it's not my only cabinet. I have a 15" next to my range that holds ginormous bags of flour and sugar and dog food on the bottom, other odds and ends organized in containers above. I think cabinets can be very useful, especially for really large heavy item.

Non drawer base cabinets are: a sink base, a corner-susan (not useful for what you are discussing here), and a vertical tray storage cabinet.

I also store awkwardly sized items (such as the coffee maker that comes out only when we have guests) in the bottom roll out tray of a tall pantry cabinet. I love the fact that I can roll that tray out. If you don't do drawers, putting a roll-out in the bottom of a base cabinet will be handy (if you can afford the loss of storage space caused by the drawer/slide mechanism).

I have several corner cabinets (dictated by the narrowness of a row home): super susan, Magic corner pull out and 1/2 round lazy susan. I have two tall, narrow tray cabs and the above fridge cab. But other than that I tried to maximize drawers...which was new to me. (I assume we're talking only base cabs).

In the past few months as I've sorted through stuff and tried to find permanent living spaces for everything, I've gotta say that I'm a total drawer convert. I wish I had more. I ended up putting my baking pans...pie pans, cake pans, tart tins, cupcake pans, etc. above my fridge in vertical dividers which I really like, but a lot of space behind them in the deep cabinet is wasted. If I had more drawer space, they'd go in vertically divided deep drawers. So would any platters that weren't too large to fit vertically.

I have found only a few things (other than food items) so far which work better in pullouts or regular cabinets. 1) cookie sheets, trays and the like, which can be stored vertically. 2) Small appliances, which are great in the supersusan or on roll outs. 3) Giant pots...12 quart or larger. And maybe platters, depending on how big they are. If they could fit vertically in drawer base, set up with dividers, I do that in a heart beat too. I ended up putting my baking pans...pie pans, cake pans, tart tins, cupcake pans, etc. above my fridge in vertical dividers which I really like, but a lot of space behind them in the deep cabinet is wasted. If I had more drawer space, they'd go in vertically divided deep drawers too.

I have found that everything else, I love in drawers. I happen to have ended up with a fair number of shallowish drawers (6" or so) and turns out they're the best place I've ever had to store serving dishes, loaf pans, lasagna pans and so on. Also in drawers: Mixing bowls. Small pans. Large pots. Colanders and strainers. Skillets and saute pans. Plus, mini-chopper, knife sharpener, measuring cups, including the large 4 cup measure, plastic storage containers, large plastic jugs and pitchers, and more.

I have my sink cab, a tall cleaning cab and a pull out pantry (2 drawers slide out attached to the door and a few that pull out like rollouts). We have some cabs over our fridge and tall pantry/cleaning cabs as well because drawers do not work at such heights. Otherwise, it is all drawers in the kitchen area. We do not need a regular cabinet anywhere.
I should add that we have shallow upper cabs on the back of our island to hide the back of the kitchen cabs and stove, but no uppers on the walls other than over the fridge.

DECISION: I'll move a couple of the items in my #1 area to other places. Everything else will fit in drawers so I'll do a 3-drawer stack instead of a regular cab.

You can see lower cabs either side of this range. Otherwise, only have lazy susan corner and a narrow storage cab in lowers; all else are drawers including some big ones.

The one on the right in photo has all pots and pans in two Lynk rollouts (silver wire style mounted on the cab shelves) and one on left has same rollouts with oddball cooking items--lg bag of basmati rice for example. Range was replaced since photo so don't have a drawer at bottom of range any more. I kept these two cabs in the plan instead of using drawers because they give me future flexibility if I need it--easier to redefine space allocation in removable shelving than fixed drawers.

I missed this thread before. I have cabinet doors under the sinks (some people even have drawers there!), and two tray cupboards.

The lower cabinet for my platters do go in vertical storage with a shelf for the doilies above the dividers and and a drawer above the cabinet.

For trays, placemats, the hot tray, and any other big, flat things, I have a lower double cabinet with thin plywood shelves every few inches. It's something my mother designed half a lifetime ago, and I've been missing in every kitchen I didn't design since I moved away from home.

Oh, and I have two pantry cabinet with ROTS.
