HELP! i don't know what to do with my yard!

Hi there! i need some serious help with my yard. i bought my house a little over 3 years ago, at that time they had put sod in but i doubt that they had prepped the land appropriately (as with other things in the house). my plan has been to completely redo the backyard at some point but due to other home improvements this has been put on the back burner.

i live in the city so the yard is probably less than 2000sf. when i moved in, there was mature tree of some sort that is pretty much a giant weed and a couple of large wild rose bushes in the yard. over the last couple of years the grass and mulched areas have been increasingly hard to keep them even sub-par condition.

i was sent overseas for work this summer and pretty much had to let the yard fend for itself. just before leaving i had the tree and rose bushes removed. as expected i came back to a dormant lawn (no irregation in the backyard) and LARGE weeds and mini trees all over. i still plan to redo the yard but cannot financially afford to do the full build out that i want to do at this time.

i am wondering if it would be a good idea to get a bunch of round up and rent a rototiller and wipe the back yard out and reseed before the fall. does anyone have any advice on this? the soil is very hard and lumpy back there and the tree sprouts are all over the grassy and mulched areas. my thought would be to just till the mulched area in as well as the distinction of the 2 areas does not do anything for me.

Mini trees seem like a big problem, but they really aren't. Trees naturally put all their energy into growing upward. They absolutely hate it when you mow over them and chop the tops off. They die off pretty quickly. This is true for most weeds that grow really tall too. The weeds that are bigger problems in a lawn are the ones that creep along down at the grass level.

If you are looking for a fix to get an acceptable lawn until you can afford more elaborate landscaping, overseeding is the way to go. IF you have some existing grass, just mow everything down as short as possible. If you have 100% weeds, spray them with roundup and wait a week before mowing. Rake up the debris so you can actually see dirt. Put down seed and fertilizer and keep it consistently moist until the grass is up. Once the new grass has grown enough to require mowing 3 times, you can use a broadleaf herbicide like weed-b-gon to treat any weeds that survive regular mowing.

If you are willing to put in a little more time and money, you can aerate and topdress after mowing short but before seeding. I would recommend against tilling. It just makes a bumpy lawn even bumpier and brings weed seeds to the surface. Just topdress with a thin layer of soil or compost and rake it smooth.

Now is the time to get going. DO NOT TILL. If the area is not level, spend your time leveling it. If you bring in more soil, which I suggest you do not, make sure rain drains away from all buildings. At most you might need a few bags of soil or sand to fill in holes. The reason I don't like bringing in more soil is that it can become habit forming. I don't know why but it happens. I have pictures of a lawn that is 8 full inches above the level of the concrete sidewalks. That happened over decades of topdressing with 1/4 inch of topsoil every year.

If you just want something green, do what billl suggests and be sure you have a mix that includes some kind of Kentucky bluegrass. The KBG will come in and continue spreading to fill in the areas between the fescue.

Hi, Birdie. How long has it been since your last repot? One of the symptoms of tight roots is shedding of lower and interior foliage. If the internodes (distance between the leaves) are growing shorter, your plant needs a repot, but winter and early spring are poor times to consider repotting - especially for plants that are stressed and very low on energy reserves. Root congestion can promote blooming in some plants, but root congestion IS a stress, and as such limits growth and vitality to a degree that varies with the amount of congestion. I think the wise thing to do would be to get your plant healthy again, and THEN worry about blooming. Sound reasonable? When did you last fertilize? Often, plants starved for nutrients, particularly nitrogen, shed foliage after 'harvesting' mobile nutrients from older leaves so new leaves can grow. Culturally, you can treat your plant like most succulents. Letting it dry down completely IS a stress, so try to time it so you're watering just before soil is completely dry. Humidity is no problem for this plant. It's glossy leaves are very high in cuticular wax, which helps guard against low indoor humidity. I'm sorry, but I disagree that a fertilizer with a high middle number is a good choice for any containerized plant. There are no plants that use more P (the middle number) than either N or K (first and last numbers). The excess P adds unnecessarily to the level of salts in the soil and can actually contribute to leaf loss and deficiencies of other nutrients ...... particularly iron and manganese. That may be more information than you need, but others too, may be curious as to why high P fertilizers are not such a good choice for container plants. Hi smithjm, Welcome to the world of orchids! What you have there is a Dendrobium orchid. These are sympodial orchids, which basically means that it grows laterally, putting out a new growth when the old one is mature. Each of those growths is called a pseudobulb and, in the case of Dendrobiums, a cane. Flowers generally emerge from the most recent cane, but the other canes are there as water and nutrient storage organs, so leave them together. Dendrobium is one of the largest families in the orchid world and has been separated into groups. Your Dendrobium belongs to the Phalaenopsis group, because its flowers look like Phalaenopsis (moth orchids). It needs bright light (some people in Florida put them outside), warmth and humidity to grow well and flower. From what I know about them, these orchids do not rebloom from old spikes, so you did the right thing to cut off the old one. Orchid flowers last a long time, but most orchids are not always in bloom. You will have to wait until the newest growth (looks like the growth on the right hand side of the picture is growing right now) has matured (gotten to the same size as the cane that has already flowered) to get more flowers. If you want to repot, now would probably be a good time. Be sure to use a pot that is just one small size up, since the larger a pot, the longer it takes to dry out, which can lead to root rot. To repot, remove the plant from its current pot, removing whatever is loose of the old media and cutting off dead roots (stringy, hollow -- good roots are firm to the touch). Clean it up in the sink. Keep all the growths together. Hold the oldest (smallest) growth at the edge of the pot and then fill in with orchid media. I'll let someone else give you a recommendation as to which media to use, since conditions in Florida are much different than they are up here in Canada. Clay is a good idea, as they are heavier than plastic, which is good as these plants do get top heavy when blooming. Clay does dry faster, though, so be sure to keep up on your watering. It's an Echeveria:). What species I don't really know. You are correct that plant definitely has meallybugs. I'm going to guess it's had them for a long time because of all the disfigured leaves. This is very typical from meallybugs. They will infest the center growth and then the plants leaves will have this weird waviness to them. The corking area is scarring. I've seen that happen also. An easy way to get rid of meallybugs is to use rubbing alcohol. With your plant you can get a little spray bottle and put the rubbing alcohol in it, then spray the plant. You can dilute with a little water if you'd like;). Keep out of direct sun while doing this treatment. It can cause your plant to burn. This also applies if you use Yates. Keep treating with rubbing alcohol until they're gone. Check once every 5-7 days. With each time you spray you should see less and less pests;). Eventually when they're gone repot in new mix. Clean the pot real good too. It's important to keep this plant away from other plants. They will spread. I hate them sooo much! Goodluck:). Here's an example of wavy leaves on one of my plants. Not as bad as yours, but I have seen Echeverias that look like yours.

I might look for a lamp that could move forward on the chest enough (without danger of toppling off) that the shade just hides that thermostat. Place it just a couple inches to the right of where it is now, or move the whole chest to the right a bit. It won't affect the functionality, esp if you use an LED bulb = no heat. Then look for a large piece of art, or a couple of stacked pieces to fill in over the right side of the chest, as shown above. Another idea is a gallery wall incorporating the thermostat: I would trade you those beautiful folded blankets for the star wars lego decor my grandson has decorated my house with! eta: I was just looking at it again and think Cyn's idea to switch the cabinets would work. You could then place the floor lamp in front of the thermostat and just ignore it.

Not sure why all of the aversion to tilling on this site. You can till if the following conditions are true and you follow the proper procedure:
If the soil is extremely compacted due to years of neglect (like the surface of a parking lot)
If you have more than 50-75% weeds (or no grass/bare spots)

The proper procedure:
round up
mow short (as short as possible)
till until soil is tiled to 4-6". it may take several passes if the soil is super compacted.
Now, here you can make a choice. After tilling millions of old weed seeds will be brought to the surface. This is just a fact of life. You can either 1.) water the dirt and wait for the seeds to germinate. Then KILL them with round-up. or 2.) get some top soil delivered that is weed free and spread it all over the tilled soil. This will re-bury the weed seeds and give you a nice layer of fresh top soil (get the 50/50 compost/soil mix) in which you can plant grass seed. Bury the seeds 2" down and you don't have to worry about them any more.
Yes, the ground will be bumpy after this. That is why the good lord provided us with a.)rakes and b.) lawn rollers.
Rake the debris up. Rake the soil to grade it. Roll it with a roller 1/2 to 2/3 full of water. This will give you level ground. If it isn't level, roll it again. This isn't going to compact the soil enough to worry about - it will just make the ground level.

So there is a time to till and a way to till. The blanket statements that just say: do not till aren't always accurate.
