Going Organic: Timing last application of Soybean meal on Bermuda

hi,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but here goes.

I've read that it is best to provide the last application of fertilizer to a bermuda lawn about 45 days before the first expected freeze. In the Sacramento area, the first freeze is about Nov.15 (apply last application about Oct 1?).

Now, does this recommendation work for Soybean meal applied at 15 lbs per 1000sqft when it follows a Lesco slow release product? I'm confused because I think I read that it takes a week or 2 for the SBM to start doing its thing. Thus, if wait till late Sept or Oct 1, then the SBM won't be actively releasing nitrogen until the middle of Oct. Consequently, it might be introducing nitrogen during the period of time where the temps could approach freezing. Would it be best to apply SBM about 2 weeks earlier?

thanks!
