running water and train whistles in the night would tie for first place. Of all the birds I think the woodthrush has the most beautiful song..just like a lonely little flute.

Mighty claps of lightening and the slow, rolling, guttural, rumble of thunder in a summer storm, building up to the crescendo.

Waves at the shore and babbling brooks.

Magpies and starlings, and crows cawing.

Cats purrings.

The peals of laughter from children playing in a distance.

My grandfather clock chiming and my cuckoo clock, and their ticking in between.

Water coming to a boil for tea, and the kettle bubbling or whistling.

Fog horns.

Bumble bees buzzing.

Trees whispering in a breeze.

A fire crackling.

Cattle lowing or the whiny of a horse when she recognises you and knows you have sugar cubes in your pocket.

Dogs baying at the moon, ditto coyotees or wolves.

A human powered reel lawn mower, clickety clacking.

Train whistles at night.

Cats purring and talking in little chirps. Crickets and Katydids on a hot summer night. Train whistles. And my all time favorite...loons...so haunting.

My favorite sound is the whistle of a train. Whether day or night, I always wish I were on it going somewhere. Birds' songs, especially cardinals, wrens, and even the noisy blue jays are music to my ears. The sounds of water trickling over rocks and/or waves crashing on the beach are also favorites.

Rain on a tin roof. I wish we had one.

Waking up early in the morning & hearing the first birds start to call each other as the day begins.

Going to sleep with waves lapping on a beach.

The sound and feel of a deer tongue licking my ear for the salt at five AM sleeping on the beach at the Asilomar in Pacific Grove with the breakers on the rocks close by. (I used to sleep there instead of the barracks and will never forget that morning.)

The loud purr of my 20 yo cat Liz on my shoulder while I sit in front of the computer and Max on my lap meowing to be brushed.

The lonely cry of a red tail hawk flying over head.

The raucous conversations of the wild flock of parrots that fly over the neighbor hood every evening.

The buzz of a hummers wings as it dives when I get too close to the nest up in a tree.

Our doves in the morning and bourkes in the evening in the aviary.

The sound of a fire with some cedar or juniper in the mix popping and whistling.

The trains that rumble by two blocks away twice a day and their whistle at the crossing.

Icicles dripping and sometimes falling from the roof ledge when I lived in Iowa.

The crunch of snow under foot when delivering the Des Moines Register at 4:30 AM and my breath as it froze in the scarf around my face 1962, 3 and 4.

The echo of the slightest sound when hiking in the painted rock canyon in the desert.

The wind across Pinyon Flats east of Idle wild as it rushes through the 5 needle pines and the water in the stream half way up the mountain from Hemet where alders grow in the middle of the stream.

Disney Land and Knots Berry Farm shooting off their fire works every night at 9:30 in the summer. Haven't been there since I quit in '87.

The beating of my Neil's heart.
The beautiful song of the Woodthrush.
The little whirring sounds of a hummingbird's wings.
Katrina's laughter is music to my ears.

I used to love a train whistle but those suckers come
through here 7 minutes apart all through the night and it
gets to be a bit much.

My mother singing softly while she was playing guitar but
the sound I miss the most is her soft gentle voice as she
prayed for her children. It was my favorite sound of all.

The waterfall of music all the robins make early in the morning. Missing it this year, too dang cold to have the windows open or sit on the porch to read the moring paper.

Spring peepers.

All you train sound people, probably going to hear more of it with the oil prices. Seems like maybe the railroads are going to rise once again.

I practically can say yes to all the sounds you good people mentioned but would like to add the swish of skis through powder snow and definitely for me the sound of a brook falling over an oldfashioned large wooden waterwheel.

Purrs at the top of the list.

Whippoorwills.

Moving water of any sort, but best is probably the hesitant tink, tink, tink of the last drops of a spring rain splashing into a puddle. Or maybe best is the swishboomswish of surf on sand.

Soap bubbles going 'pip' as you fill a dishpan.

In the middle of the night, a baby giggling as it plays with a moonbeam.

The crackle of dry leaves as you scuff through them.

A gentle breeze through a forest of pine needles.

A saxaphone playing the blues.

A hot shower when your muscles hurt... I guess that's a combination of swooshing water and groans of relief.

Laughter, any time any place.

An old-time wooden screen door, banging shut.

Tisha,i had another(yearly) argument with DH yesterday on the virtues of a banging screen door. This year he went as far as acutally measuring the door for a replacement. He will not win this one.
Another sound i love is the squeak of gym shoes on an old wooden basketball court and the sound of the ball being bounced in a hushed gym before a player goes for the foul shot. Can you tell im a Hoosier?

From childhood, the distant sound of a train passing in the night, about 1/2 mile away and the creaking (and scent of the canvas) of an elderly "glider" (sort of a small sofa, suspended so it swings back and forth) out on our 2nd-floor porch in summer.

The many different cicada calls you can hear in the summer in Japan. After we moved to So. Cal, the people who bought our house sent us a recording of them, which I play from time to time. Nothing says "summer" to me so much as those cicadas.

The chirping calls of my 16-year-old cat, as he leaps back up onto the bed many times during the night and walks up my body to look in my face.

Cat purrs, of course. And last, but not least, my husband's voice, especially his laugh, which I would know anywhere.
