OK, I've had enough vacation and am ready to go back to work. Unfortunately the summer semester won't start until the end of the month.

Went to West Nashville earlier in the week to pick up a new special trailer specifically built for an 18 catamaran. Was totin' the big cat on a trailer it wasn't really designed for. The old trailer was only good for a couple of miles to the river and back. This new trailer is for long range plans, say Gulf Shores or Dauphin Island. I drove home on the Natchez Trace for most of the way. The surrounding country side and small towns of Nashville look productive. As opposed to small towns who are not satellites of a big city.

The summer thunder boomers are early this year. I am listening to rolling booms and rumbles all around the compass. If you believe in weather weasels we are in a drought here in the Valley. But it has rained enough over my house that I haven't had to water anything, especially the muscadines.

The heat induced storms should end around sundown, or just before, when the heat of the day has left for the evening. I'm hoping to get the kayak out on First Creek or Second Creek before dark to set a few crawdad traps. How did First and Second Creeks get their names? Why, they are the first and second creek you get to on the way to Florence.

Probably won't leave for Florida until Thursday or so. Dad won't ride in my car so we are taking his. That means I can't take either of the sailboats, his car doesn't have towing capability. Hmmm, but we can strap a kayak or surfboard on the top, no problem. Wonder is the storm off east of Florida is still kicking up waves...

I've written a few more poems. Some come from earlier musin's I have done here. When I get enough for a small book, I think I will take up John on his offer to edit them.

Steaks are thawing for summer, but I can't get up the energy to be creative with them today. It's all ready too hot to cook in the kitchen, so it will be the grill on the patio this evening.

I'm bored. Beware.......

Just enjoying the first week without classes or papers or exams and making lots of jewelry. I better start selling some of this stuff--otherwise it's a much too expensive hobby. And I need to do some work in the garden, too, but it's so much easier to sort beads.

I just had a phone call from the Director of the Honors Program and it seems I missed the wrap-up luncheon on Wednesday. I guess I am enjoying this time off a little too much this week, and I do regret missing what is always a good lunch--and of course, talking about the successes and problems of the semester (yeah, right). Graduation is Sunday and I always love graduation, either to applaud those who have made it and made it successfully and, less delightful, to wonder how some made it at all.

The days are getting longer, warmer, and we need a bit of rain. I shouldn't complain because so many folks are practically drowning in rain.

The kittens are almost 11 months old and I love them more every day, though I do with Darcy would stop climbing drapes. On the other hand, she is a relentless killer of the mice I didn't know we had.

We're having the same kind of weather as Michael. I hate to complain since we've had drought conditions for the past three years, but it is definitely soggy here & after being gone for all last week, the weeds are getting the upper hand around here. Plus the wet weather has been an ideal breeding ground for bugs of all kinds. The mosquitoes especially are Texas-sized this year and the woods are full of swarms of really irritating gnats.

Why is it so hard to catch up when you've been away from home for a while? It seems to take me days to catch up on emsils and the snail mail that piled up while I was gone.

Pidge, I know what you mean about the mice. I never thought I had any, but the cats seem to bring me a "present" at least once a week. I appreciate their vigilance, but wish they wouldn't present me with their latest hunting prize while I'm half asleep in bed.

Mobile or HOME? I think you've answered your own question Michael, if it's still not home to you in Mobile. I'm proud of you helping in colleges, high schools or with oil spills. You need Michelle and her powers of muddling mint to make your drink ;) I'm really ambivalent about this weekend. It's my last weekend to remodel the house. Done or not. I plan to celebrate. I'll clean after that and after pictures will be forthcoming. I'm writing my hardship letter to explain why the bank should consider short selling my house. It's in His hands now and at the right time. I'm excited it's done and I'm sad I'm leaving years of work. It's kind of like graduating. Next chapter! Have to go make up a menu for my celebration dinner. I can see seafood in that picture. I'm really sickened by what's going on in China and the many school children are in my prayers! Hope that gets cleared up soon. I am going to see an internist in June for my osteoarthritis. Before I go, I contacted my parents and sibs for their medical history. I found a spreadsheet that they could just check with an X for conditions. It was clear as a bell when I got it back... Xs all the way across the osteoarthritis row, HA! Mom and her parents, dad and his parents. Duh! No diabetes, but boy the heart stuff is ugly. Guess I better get on a good diet (I did quit eating red meat months ago, but need to up the fish intake) and get more veggies introduced.

Sometimes after living on the edge for eons.......a routine feels comforting, like chicken soup. For those of us whose bodies awaken, but it takes the brain an hour or two to kick in (the reverse is also true.......when the body stops to rest the mind keeps ticking) if it weren't for a morning routine the day would start noonish. The key to the conundrum is to change routines often. LOL.

On the water. Where you need to be. Ah. Shame on you for not telling us about your new job! ;) Grey Goose ties with Belvedere as to die for in my book. You should so live on Dauphin if you're fantasizing. Renting is not throwing away money when you're decding where to buy. It's throwing away money to buy when you're not 100% certain. Just my $0.02. Guess your bananas will have a more permanent home now! Supposed to go swimming tonight at the Dive-In movie, but I bet we get rained out :( In the morning, I have to take the car in again for brake problems. They better fix whatever is wrong for free since it shouldn't have any additional problems. It was in the hundreds of dollars last time. Old cars wear out. I really want to make rum raisin ice cream and peach. I've found the perfect vanilla and perfectly chocolaty chocolate recipes, time for something more complex. I can do the details on ice cream so now it's time to amp it up. I don't think my waistline can handle much more though! I may switch to sorbets as they look pretty good on the cooking forum; pineapple with coconut and grape. mmm. Sweet icy goodness. Hm. Maybe tonight since we can't go swimming.

I was too busy to ramble much Friday, so I'll do a Saturday ramble. The DH is off on one of his little excursions today, so my doggie, the cats and I are holding the house down. The sky is darkening, and I hear a boom of thunder now and again on the horizon. At times like this, I think of blue body paint, and old times at the GW and the rain dance. We need it badly. I just finished off a leisurely brunch. The simple repast as John used to say. I cracked an egg I gathered yesterday into a ten inch cast iron griddle, and it filled the whole bottom. I had to fold it over to fit the spatula under it and put it on the plate. Doubtless left by one of the old biddie hens, who is smart enough to know that the pullet's legs are banded this year. That means it's culling time at the henhouse and she's smart enough to know an egg the size of a tennis ball buys her a presidential pardon. LOL. I made a potato pattie to go with the egg, and toasted a couple of slices of the bread I baked yesterday, sopped them in real butter, and drowned them in homemade strawberry jam. It doesn't get much simpler than that, but it also doesn't get much better. Last night, we had the first veggie soup from the garden. Cabbage, green beans, celery, baby carrots, tomatoes and probably a few things I've forgotten, simmered all day in the broth from a big beef knuckle and served with a loaf of bread so hot from the oven, you couldn't even slice it. The DH and I had a ceremony early last week, honoring the first ripe tomato. It was cleaved in half, still warm, and served up with the salt shaker. You have to grow tomatoes to appreciate what I mean. I still haven't been fishing or swimming yet. It's coming down the pike. Hopefully I can scoop up a g'kid or two for the occasion. I asked myself last night is my vanity worth giving up swimming? I said no. I hope that never changes as when I was a young woman, I used to really feel sorry for the older crowd who sat by the beaches, never bringing their swim gear, and having that 'look' in their eyes. It's a positively wonderful experience for an older person. Such gentle exercise, almost weightless. I starting to see some butterflies, finally......but not the wild orgy of them I used to see before the industrial park went in nearby. The dragonflies are abundant and venture away from the pond regularly. The crawdads are burrowed deep into the stream bed and the first good rain in months should bring them back out. Summer.

My garden is in drought; the unmulched portions are dry as talc 6 inches down. I have to irrigate before planting seeds. Wry twist: a week ago as I drove to work, most of the distance was being drenched with the sort of downpour that high-speed wipers can't keep up with. No road edge to move to, so everyone was doing 5 mph. There was so much rain coming down that the road was covered across all four lanes and water flowed over the curbs and sidewalks. My garden didn't get a drop.

Our schools finish in June. I'm tired, but I'm a twelve-monther: summer is just another season. Inside the office, two of my specialists retire in June [including my favorite, who was a fantastic teacher], and a third may be going out on medical leave which will probably segue into retirement.
