Did I make a big mistake?

I moved into a house that had an existing but very neglected rose garden in a knot formation. Since I am very pregnant, I decided to improve the soil in the rose garden and plant vegetables among them so I could care for both in one space. So far I have found thrips and aphids on the roses, cabbage lopers, and possibly black spot. I do have lots of marigolds, garlic and nasturtiums planted with them. Am I predisposing both my veggies and my roses to multiple diseases and bugs by planting them together?
