I tried an experiment by *cutting* the pieces of paper rather than tear them and unfortunately, the experiment did not come out the way I hoped it would. I canÂt even *draw* a straight line, what made me think I could *cut* a straight line...LOL! Anyway, the collage came out too busy too. But, there are elements I like about it, so IÂm going to try again. Next time I think IÂll do 3 smaller collages and make them all less busy by eliminating some elements and will *tear* the papers like I usually do, rather than cut them.

This is one of the elements I want to repeat. I liked using ScoutyÂs nose, eyes, ears, and tail. But in the next one I think IÂll write the words myself, rather than printing them out in vellum. It came out too messy and I didnÂt like the fact that you can see the edges of the vellum paper. I was hoping that it would look see through. Sorry the pic is blurry:

Ei, what a neat idea(s) and tribute to a wonderful pet. I agree, the original is pretty wonderful looking. :)

I'm with you in the can't cut/draw/plant/walk a straight line club, but JEEZ!!!! the thought and energy that went into this more than makes up for any superfluous flaws :-)

What a great thing to do.

Eld61621 ... DD was in Girl Scouts from Brownies through most of Cadettes. I was a leader or co leader for Brownies and Juniors. DH was Packmaster for the local Cub Scouts and it seemed like I wore the hat of everything else. Award chair mostly. Parental involvement was difficult to get even back in the 80's. One year DH led a group of Webelos because no leader could be found. He was also leading our DS's Den at the time. DD has good memories of Girl Scouts despite the usual glitches of some crazy leaders and cliques. She had hoped for the same experience for DGD. But the new program is just nowhere near as interesting as it once was. Plenty of leaders and girls complain it is just like school. Now Girls Scouts are allowing, even encouraging mixed level troops. The Troop DGD would have been in would have been a mix of Daisies and Juniors. Some of the Juniors would be bridging to Cadettes the following year. DGD would have been the youngest and the only Kindergartener in the Daisy group of 8. As DD learned more of the leader's plan she saw a train wreck ahead. The leader decided all the parents would take turns leading the two levels. Sure they will. ROTFLMBO She has a girl in each and wanted them to do the same things as much as possible. A 1st and a 4th grader. Shaking my head. Never been in scouts, didn't want anyone harshing on her mellow with constructive advice. Then she decided all the paperwork was overwhelming and wanted to have DD do it for her so she could "lead". See the problem? DD felt she would be left picking up the pieces after the train derailed. The Journeys are boring. The crafts were all that would have mattered to DGD. They are friends. DD is open to the friendship remaining outside of scouts but she concluded there was zero hope if she stayed on out of guilt.

Yes, it is a different world, and yet it's the same. Vulnerable people, less powerful people, have always been at risk from those who are stronger and more aggressive. And you cannot tell by looking. We all know the old stereotypes of scoutmasters, priests, Etc, people who put themselves into positions in which they will have access to large numbers of vulnerable children, victimize those children, and yet who have enjoyed absolute credibility and Trust. And a child in distress is a very vulnerable person. Hand them a box of tissues? Sure, but hand them a pillow or a teddy bear at the same time. I once spoke with a teacher who taught special needs and at-risk children. One of the clever and caring things that she did was to create a safe Corner in the back of the classroom. She had a giant Appliance box with all kinds of fabric with different textures, velvets, flannels, Etc. Also in the Box were very soft stuffed animals and a few pillows. Anyone who needed a break or a comforting environment could go play in what they call the fabric box.

I have to agree about the idea that treats should always be healthful. If you eat a healthy diet something fat and sugary occasionally will not harm you. With all of the do's and don't of what you should be eating it is hard to know what is or is not "healthy". I used to bake things and collected many cookbooks of all kinds. One of the things I started noticing was that in many of the recipes cookies of all kinds had notations that they would only keep for a couple of days. I remember cookies that would be better after they had set for a month to mellow. I used to be involved with several social service groups for young adults not kids. We did enjoy ourselves too much after the activities but part of doing the activities was having a sense of accomplishment. Of perhaps doing some good. Most of the groups for younger than we were have always seemed not to be that way but were to establish who was better than everyone and were seldom to do good for others. Then the idea of giving everyone a trophy started. We sort of had trophies. If you worked every day or night on a project you received a t-shirt.

Hi Jon, Thanks for posting the info! That helps a lot! With water available you can get a few small sprinklers for your boxes, and anywhere else where you may plant things, can be watered by turning a sprinkler on in the area for a half hour or so about once a week. Being in Empire there should be way plenty snow to keep the soil from drying out completely over winter--and all you need over winter is enough moisture to keep the roots from completely desiccating. It sounds like you should be good to go with "normal"--non-xeric--plants, and if you wind up with xeric plants too, I recommend planting the xeric things and the "normal" things in separate areas so that, after about a year, the xeric areas will need very little watering. I can definitely bring you a start for a Shasta daisy and a black-eyed-susan--"normal" watering things! My plants--and most of the things you'll get at the swap are small "starter" plants, so it's gonna take a year or so for them to get going--but they're free! I'll also have starts for some sedums and hen & chicks, both xeric, and both "short" things that are VERY easy to grow. The hen & chicks won't be potted or rooted, but they come with complete directions and you can make it a "project" for somebody to plant them! The closeups of the details are beautiful. Sounds like maybe you'd prefer a gallery-of-Scout effect rather than one large collage? Whatever the result, what a lovely process to enjoy of a great guy, Ei. You can't go wrong with subject matter like that!

Ei, the birch trees and the woman is my favorite. (Wouldn't mind a closer look at that). It's all special, but Scout's pose in that one looks so fun :)

Ei, there is Scout! Nice to see a photo of him again. Lovely dog! I enjoyed looking at your collage. I was not a bit surprised that it is so creative after having seem the table in your kitchen. Love all of the ideas you had. Especially love the portrait of him in the middle and the one where he seems to be looking back at a path with trees on either side. Have you actually painted the art work on it?

Great idea Ei. I take it that the pics are made on a copy machine? Then are thay glued to the background? I made a much less extensive version of a collage a time or 3 for the Extension Homemaker's Fair exhibit. That was many years ago.

Well thanks everyone! You are always so supportive. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and very therapeutic. :-)

Saucy, I hope Sara does do one of Zeuss. It's a lot of fun and anyone can do it, ages 5 - 85! :-)

PM2, yes, I did do most of the painting. Well, painting/drawing. I use watercolor pencils, which I think are a lot easier to work with than paints and brushes. For the trees in the one pic that you liked, I did have to use acrylic paint cause I wanted to give the leaves texture. Some things I didn't draw, for instance, the picture that Cynthia admires. I love the very Art Deco look of that...it's from an old postcard I saved. For that one I scanned the postcard, printed it out and changed the color of the dog to black and white so it would look like Scout.

Cynthia, I'll try to get a closeup shot of that for you. I really like it too and wish I knew who the artist was. Unfortunately the print is old and wasn't signed.

Marian - yes, all the photos of Scout were scanned or printed from my camera software, as I didn't want to use the originals. I use a product called Matt Medium to bond the pieces to the canvas. I don't know what the difference is between Matt Medium and Decoupage/glue, but that's what was recommended to me, so that's what I use :-)
What kind of collages did you make for the Extension Fair? Did you save any of them? If so, I'd love to see them. How neat that you were involved in the Extension Fair exhibit. I love going to those types of fairs. It's so wonderful to see what everyone has created. I especially love to see the kids works of art. Some of them are so advanced, I'm just amazed. We go to the fair at my garden girlfriend's cottage every year and we always time it so that we come on the week-end of the fair.

Ei, this is reaaly a work of art. I always wanted to do something like that with my horses. My problem is I always have the great Ideas but no follow through.
